1873 – The Wigan rail crash was a railway accident which occurred at Wigan North Western station, England, to a northbound excursion train in the very early morning. Thirteen passengers were killed after derailed carriages collided with station buildings.

1958 – USS Nautilus (SSN-571), the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine, completes the first submerged transit to the North Pole.
