1861 – Lieutenant Adam J. Slemmer, who was in charge of United States forces at Fort Barrancas, deter mined that Fort Pickens was more defensible than any of the other posts in the area and abandons Fort Barrancas.

1945 – Construction begins on the USS Nansemond County (LST-1064). She is sold to Japan in 1961 and laterthe Phillipines in 1976.
