The Porta Nuova goes along the Trinita' bastion (1836), and was built into the 1531 rampart. It stands alone and was constructed between 1533 and 1546 by the military architect and engineer Michele Sanmicheli. The Austrians modified it in 1854 finishing off the facade in tuff and opening up the two archways on the side. Therefore, only the central archway opened towards the countryside in the original sixteenth century gate. The keystone carries a sculpture of Jupiter's head. The Porta Nuova train station is not far from the gateway and the Verona Exhibition and Trade Fair centre is only two kilometres down the road.

The Macroplaza or La Gran Plaza is a Town square or Plaza located in the heart of the city of Monterrey, Mexico.

The Macroplaza was built in the early 1980s during the governorship of Alfonso Martínez Domínguez. The construction of the Macroplaza required the demolition of several old buildings and houses including a famous movie theater.

The Macroplaza is the second biggest plaza in the world; it has an extension of 400,000 square meters consisting of various monuments, smaller plazas and gardens.

One of the most iconic monuments of the city is the Faro del Comercio (Lighthouse of Commerce), a 70 meters tall modern lighthouse located in the same plaza, equipped with a green lasser, that shot its light around the city at nights.]]>

Djemaa el Fna is a square and market place in Marrakesh's medina quarter (old city). The origin of its name remains unknown : it means Assembly of the dead in Arabic, but as the word djemaa also means mosque in Arabic, it could also mean place of the vanished mosque, in reference to a destroyed Almoravid mosque.

The place remains the main square of Marrakesh, used equally by locals and tourists. During the day it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, youths with chained Barbary apes, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers who will pose for photographs for tourists. As the day progresses the entertainments on offer change: the snake charmers depart, and in the afternoon and evening the square becomes more crowded, with Chleuh dancing-boys (it would be against custom for girls to provide such an entertainment), story-tellers (telling their tales in Berber or Arabic, to an audience of appreciative locals), magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As dark descends the square fills with dozens of food-stalls, and the crowds are at their height.]]>

The Groenplaats or 'Green Place', one of Antwerp's most prominent squares is located right in the heart of the city's historic district. Not as green as its name suggests, the Groenplaats is a square bordered mainly by cafés. The café terraces are very popular with both tourists and locals and are a great place to try some of the many specialty beers.

Until the 18th century, the Groenplaats was Antwerp's central cemetery. During the Austrian occupation, emperor Joseph II abolished cemeteries inside the city walls, so it was converted into a square. In 1843 a large crucifix in the middle of the square was replaced by a statue of Antwerp's famous painter P.P. Rubens.

The square has seen some improvement over the years, with the construction of an underground parking and the destruction of an ugly parking building which was replaced by a postmodern building. The most interesting building on the square is the exemplary renovated 1920 Grand Bazar, now a Hilton Hotel.

The square offers a great view on the city's Cathedral, which is just north of the Groenplaats. It is also the starting place of a tourist tram, which offers a ride along some of Antwerp's most interesting sights. ]]>

St Andrew Square is a square in Edinburgh, Scotland, part of the New Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name is frequently mis-spelt as St Andrew's Square.

Located at the east end of George Street it was intended as the mirror of Charlotte Square (designed by Robert Adam) in the west, but due to complications during building they are not completely symmetrical. Today, housing is confined to the northern side, with major banks and insurance companies occupying much of the rest of the Square, making it one of the major financial centres of Europe. The square houses Dundas House, world headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Harvey Nichols department store is located on the east side of the square.

Upon the start of building in 1768, architect James Craig had trouble realising his planned vision for the square. He had intended that St. Andrew's Church to lie on its east side looking along George Street to its twin St. George's on Charlotte Square (laid out from 1792). However, Sir Lawrence Dundas, a wealthy businessman, preferred the site for his home and bought the ground before Craig's plan could be implemented. St. Andrew's Church had to be built part-way along George Street, and its place was taken by Dundas House, built by Sir William Chambers. In the centre of the square is the Melville Monument, in memory of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville.

Famous residents of St. Andrew Square included philosopher David Hume, who lived at No. 8 and politician and inventor Henry Brougham, who lived at No. 21. The oldest house in the square is No. 35, built by Robert Adam. It was the former Douglas Hotel patronised by Sir Walter Scott, Empress Eugenie and Queen Victoria while she consulted Sir James Simpson.]]>

Union Square (also known as Union Square Park) is an important and historic intersection in New York City, located where Broadway and the Bowery came together in the early 19th century. Today it is bounded by 14th Street, Union Square East, 17th Street, and Union Square West. It is run and operated jointly by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation as well as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (New York).

Important thoroughfares which lead away from the park are Broadway, leading both north and south; Fourth Avenue, leading southeast to the Bowery; and Park Avenue South, leading north to Grand Central Terminal. Union Square lies over 14th Street–Union Square, a New York City Subway complex served by the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains. Neighborhoods around the park are the Flatiron District to the north, Chelsea to the west, Greenwich Village and New York University to the south, and Gramercy to the east.

Union Square is noted for its impressive equestrian statue of George Washington, created by Henry Kirke Brown and unveiled in 1856. Other statues in the park include the Marquis de Lafayette, created by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and Abraham Lincoln, created by Henry Kirke Browne. A newer addition, added in 1986, is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the southwest corner of the park.

In April 1861, soon after the fall of Fort Sumter, Union Square was the site of a patriotic rally that is thought to have been the largest public gathering in North America up to that time.]]>

Piazza Venezia is not only the topographical center of Rome but its historical locus as well. It forms the nexus between Rome's various historical periods - joining ancient Rome with the Rome of the Popes.

It is hands down the most important piazza in Rome- the Capital of Italy- rendering it Italy's center. It's the piazza of the avant-guard, for it is also where Rome's first gas lights were installed and where the first horse drawn buses ran. The piazza, as you see it today, was finally completed in the early 20th century with the construction of the Vittoriano, the monument to King Victor Emanuel. The piazza's name comes from Palazzo Venezia, originally the modest home of the cardinals attached to the Basilica of San Marco.

In Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar, on the northern side of Sühbaatar square stood Sühbaatar's Mausoleum. In 2005 the mausoleum was removed and relocated to a graveyard outside of the city, to make place for a center dedicated to Chinggis Khaan, that is currently under construction. Sühbaatar was a Mongolian war hero in the early 20th-century when Mongolia was fighting for its independence. The mausoleum was built in 1921, two years before Sühbaatar's death. The mausoleum resembled the shape of Lenin's Mausoleum but differs in color.

Horloogiyn Choybalsan, the ruler of Mongolia during the Communist era, was also buried in the same mausoleum. The corpses of both rulers were ritually burned in 2004, under supervision of the Buddhist clergy.

Potsdamer Platz is an important square and traffic intersection in central Berlin, Germany. It is named after the nearby city of Potsdam.

In the 1920s and '30s, it was one of the busiest traffic centers in all of Europe. Its heyday was in the 1920s, when together with the Alexanderplatz it was at the heart of Berlin's nightlife. (See 1920s Berlin)

As was the case in much of Berlin, many of the buildings around Potsdamer Platz were turned to rubble by air raids and heavy artillery bombardment during the last years of World War II. When the city was divided into sectors by the occupying Allies at the end of the war, the square found itself on the boundary between the American, British, and Soviet sectors.

As Cold War tensions rose during the Fifties, restrictions were placed on travel between the Soviet sector (East Berlin) and the western sectors (West Berlin). Lying on this invisible frontier, Potsdamer Platz was no longer an important destination for Berliners. With the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961 along this intracity frontier, Potsdamer Platz found itself divided in two. What had once been a busy intersection had become desolate.]]>

Without doubt the most beautiful of all Turin’s piazzas, San Carlo stands at the mid-point of via Roma, a focus of retail, cultural and café life. Superbly harmonious and symmetrical, the rectangular square, with the elegant porticoed yellow and white façades of baroque noble houses, was designed by Carlo di Castellamonte to be the salon of the city’s intellectual life and was completed in 1638. The Plaza de la Reina can be found behind the Cathedral, and from this plaza you will have a beautiful view of the "Miquelet", the most famous bell tower in the city. This plaza is a pretty introduction to "Ciutat Vella" (the old city). The center of the plaza houses a small garden with benches occupied by passers-by and pigeons taking a break. This square really is a very charming and welcoming plaza. You can hire a horse-drawn carriage to take you the old-fashioned way through the most typical spots in the old quarter, or you can relax at one of the many outdoor cafés, terraces and restaurants that line the plaza, drinking a good hot chocolate next to the Santa Catalina bell tower.

Ernest Hemingway lived around the corner from there on rue du Cardinal-Lemoine on the third floor of number 74, and described the square in The Snows of Killimanjaro. Balzac also described it in Père Goriot. The fountain was put in in 1990. The word Contrescarpe itself is from the creation in 1852 of a military emplacement there. Before then, it was at limits of the walls of the city - the Enceinte de Philippe Auguste. Remenants of the wall are also just around the corner on rue Clovis at number 3. The square now is dominated by two cafes, one of them La Chope, the other La Contrescarpe.

These two cafés trade customers with the seasons. La Chope - on the northern side of the square - gets the sun just about all day throughout the year.]]>
