Several SIGINT tasks are performed at Leitrim. "The Communications Research projects never cease at Leitrim. The operations area is manned on a continuous basis so the bulk of the station's personnel are shift keepers. The primary function of the station during most of its existence almost certainly has been the interception of diplomatic radio traffic between Ottawa and foreign capitals.

Leitrim contains a wide variety of antennae, including a Pusher HF-DF circularly-disposed antenna array (CDAA), three other large circular arrays, four satellite dishes, and a number of other, small antennae

Maintenance of the High Arctic Data Communications System (HADCS), the link between Ottawa and Alert, is conducted out of Leitrim. It is possible that the station also does some processing of intercepts received from Alert through the HADCS. The station also performs signal development (SIG DEV) work and "provides engineering, technical, and special logistics support to the other stations of the [Supplementary Radio] system."

Leitrim's most recent and most important mission, however, is the interception of satellite communications, begun with the installation of a small satellite dish, probably in 1985. By November 1986 at the latest, a medium-sized satellite dish (ca. 10 metres) had been added, and by the end of 1987 two medium-sized dishes were in service. By July 1990, another small dish had been added to the station's inventory, for a total of two medium-sized and two small dishes now in service.

The targets of Leitrim's dishes are probably Mexican and/or Brazilian communications satellites. Both countries' satellite constellations were established in 1985, at about the same time as Leitrim's new dishes started to be installed. A focus on these satellites would also explain CSE's rumoured increase in Spanish language activities.]]>

Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) has obtained satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe of two possible locations of the gas centrifuge uranium enrichment facility under construction near Qom, Iran. Both are tunnel facilities located within military compounds approximately 30-40 kilometers away from Qom.

This is one of the two possible locations. The other one is also mapped on this site.

At Poglina Tower, was built around 1960 a secret military base that at the end of the'60s became known in relation to the "Piano Solo" in the'80s and returned to the honors of the chronicles for the case "Gladio ".

The land had been purchased by a company with limited liability coverage, whose members were representatives of high level SIFAR, the military secret service. Camp 1391 is a controversial Israel Defense Force prison. The existence of the camp and its inmates was completely unknown to the public until 2003 and details of its nature are still not entirely clear.

The camp was accidentally discovered by an Israeli historian called Gad Kroizer. He stumbled on a 70-year-old map drawn by a government architect while researching old British police buildings. He found on the map 62 British police compounds in Palestine in the late 1930s and early 1940s where both Arab and Jewish militants against the British occupation were interrogated. A camp called Meretz did not appear on any of the modern Israeli maps. Kroizer started digging deeper and in 2004, he unveiled Camp 1391 to the public and the next day he received a phone call from Israel's military censor who wanted to know why the article had not been submitted for inspection. It is situated in Israel's North District near Pardes Hanna, less than an hour's drive from Tel Aviv and close to Highway 65 between Hadera and Afula. The HaMoked, an Israeli human-rights group, has petitioned the High Court of Justice to close it down.]]>

A 35 acre subterranean Cold War City that lies 1000 feet beneath Corsham. Built in the late 50s this massive city complex was designed by Government personnel in the event of a nuclear strike. A former Bath stone quarry the city, code named Burlington, was to be the site of the main Emergency Government War Headquarters - the hub of the Country's alternative seat of power outside London.

Over a kilometre in length, and boasting over 60 miles of roads. Blast proof and completely self-sufficient the secret underground site could accommodate up to 6,000 people, in complete isolation from the outside world, for up to three months.

An underground lake and treatment plant could provide all the drinking water needed whilst 12 huge tanks could store the fuel required to keep the four massive generators, in the underground power station, running for up to three months. And unlike most urban cities, above ground, the air within the complex could also be kept at a constant humidity and heated to around 20 degrees. The city was also equipped with the second largest telephone exchange in Britain, a BBC studio from which the PM could address the nation and an internal Lamson Tube system that could relay messages, using compressed air, throughout the complex. ]]>

The USAF RC-135V/W RIVET JOINT surveillance aircraft are equipped with an extensive array of sophisticated intelligence gathering equipment enabling military specialists to monitor the electronic activity of adversaries. Also known as "RJ", the aircraft are sometimes called "hogs" due to the extended "hog nose" and "hog cheeks". RIVET JOINT has been widely used in the 1990's -- during Desert Storm, the occupation of Haiti, and most recently over Bosnia. Using automated and manual equipment, electronic and intelligence specialists can precisely locate, record and analyse much of what is being done in the electromagnetic spectrum.

The fleet of 14 RIVET JOINT aircraft increased to 15 in late 1999 with the addition of a converted C-135B. The jet's conversion cost about $90 million. The Rivet Joint fleet is currently undergoing significant airframe, navigational and powerplant upgrades which include re-engining from the TF-33 to the CFM-56 engines used on the KC-135R and upgrade of the flight deck instrumentation and navigational systems to the AMP standard. A bomb shelter is located under the lawn north of the National Park Service's Stephen P. Mather Training Center, formerly Storer College, off Fillmore Street in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The history of the shelter is still being investigated, but available information indicates that it was an emergency relocation site for Department of the Interior headquarters and the Secretary of the Interior.

Personnel access to the shelter is through a metal door, apparently of standard commercial design, set into a retaining wall adjacent to the driveway serving the Training Center's parking lot. There is no vehicular entrance to the shelter, only a parking space in front of the entrance.

The space is now used by the NPS Interpretive Design Center.]]>

The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker is a former government-owned nuclear bunker located at Hack Green, Cheshire, England.

The first military use of the area was in World War II, when a Starfish decoy site was established at Hack Green. Its purpose was to confuse Luftwaffe bombers looking for the vital railway junction at Crewe.

A Ground-Controlled Intercept (GCI) radar station was added.

In the 1950s, the site was modernised as part of the ROTOR project. This included the provision of a substantial semi-sunk reinforced concrete bunker or blockhouse (type R6).

The station, officially designated RAF Hack Green, was also known as Mersey Radar. It provided an air traffic control service to military aircraft crossing civil airspace.

The site was abandoned and remained derelict for many years, until the Home Office took it over. They rebuilt the R6 bunker as a Regional Government Headquarters (RGHQs) - one of a network of 17 such sites throughout the UK - designed to enable government to continue in the aftermath of a major nuclear attack on the UK.

In about 1992, following the end of the Cold War, the Home Office abandoned its network of RGHQs and sold many of the sites. This one was bought by a private company and subsequently opened to the public in 1998 as a museum with a Cold War theme.]]>

Whilst their primary data centre is at the RAF Ash site, a secondary one is situated in the hardened command bunker within the former USAF/RAF Greenham Common airbase near Newbury in Berkshire, most of which has been converted into the New Greenham Park industrial estate.

Incidentally, right next door you can still spot the old Ground Launched Cruise Missile (GLCM) Alert and Maintenance Area (GAMA) - specially constructed silos designed to (hopefully) withstand both nuclear and conventional direct strikes.

Very important spy centre can be found at the unassuming location of Irton Moor, near the quaint seaside town of Scarborough. Back bench MPs in successive governments have failed gloriously in trying to find out precisely what goes on at this base, which MI5/6 operatives refer to as simply "Scarborough".

The 1:25000 OS map gives the full detail and labels it with the rather romantic title "Wireless Station". It dates back to the very early pre-WWII days of GCHQ, when that was known as the Government Codes and Ciphers School (GC&CS). The Capenhurst Tower was installed by GCHQ to scoop up all telecommunications between the UK and the Irish Republic from 1989 until 1998.

The microwave beam from the BT cable under the Irish Sea, originated at BT's microwave towers at Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey.

It continued through the BT towers at Gwaenysgor near Prestatyn in North Wales, Pale Heights near Kelsall in Cheshire on the edge of Delamere Forest and at Sutton Common near Macclesfield, Cheshire. It then joined up with the rest of the network down to the world famous landmark BT Tower in London.

Navy Keeps A Secret In Plain Sight

Hush-Hush Project Underway by Potomac

Shortly after dawn on a recent morning, two dump trucks and a water tanker pulled up to a new, unmarked complex of buildings at East Potomac Park, the grassy peninsula near the Jefferson Memorial. The drivers exited their cabs, knocked at a gatehouse with blacked-out windows and waited for a security guard to emerge from behind a locked door.

A few minutes later, a panel of 10-foot-high security fence slid open, and the trucks disappeared inside, leaving the joggers and cyclists along the waterfront none the wiser about their mission.

What goes on beyond the fence is a mystery. The multi-agency review normally required to erect anything on federal parkland did not apply to the beige, metal buildings. The Navy, which operates the site at Ohio and Buckeye drives SW, calls the work a "utility assessment and upgrade" and volunteers nothing more.

"As a matter of policy, we can't go into the particulars," said a Navy spokesman, Lt. Cmdr. Joseph A. Surette.

Frederick J. Lindstrom, acting secretary of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, said it is illegal for him to discuss the matter. He did say the Navy started the work without seeking review from the commission, which oversees the city's Potomac River parklands.

"Let's just say when they're finished, you'll be glad they've done what they've done," Lindstrom said.

Amid the secrecy, theories abound about the four-acre complex, which is dead center in a ring that includes the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport and the National War College. Is it a sophisticated sensor station, guarding the 14th Street bridge and other Potomac River crossings? Is it an excavation point for underwater barriers to protect the Washington Channel and Potomac River from submarines? Is it a staging area for Navy Seabees securing underwater cables between the White House and the Pentagon, across the river?

Whatever the case, in a capital where concrete barriers and police roadblocks have become a common and often grating part of city life since Sept. 11, 2001, the Navy compound represents a more ambiguous side to security. It is visible and obscure, hidden in plain sight, billed as temporary but expected to last for years.

And it joins a network of things large and small erected to protect the capital. Wind and radiation tracking instruments sit atop the Federal Reserve. Biowarfare sensors sniff the air in front of the Smithsonian Institution. Antiaircraft systems have been spotted on a rooftop next to the White House and on a Prince George's County riverbank, across the Potomac from Mount Vernon.

For its part, the Navy began work unobtrusively about a year ago on its site near Hains Point, a recreation area known best for its golf course, fishing and "The Awakening," J. Seward Johnson Jr.'s giant sculpture.

The Navy took over the National Park Service land without any announcement. When the agencies that oversee the Mall caught up with the project months later, the hangar-like structures, which cover an excavation area, were visible from Interstate 395.

The agencies' only recourse was to ask the Justice Department to sue the Pentagon. Lindstrom said that was deemed not an option.

After inquiries, senior officials at the Fine Arts Commission and the National Capital Planning Commission were briefed about the security-sensitive project and sworn to silence. The staffs of both commissions, which review many federal agency security requests, were bypassed, and no paper trail was produced.

"The project's sponsors felt it wasn't necessary to bring it to these agencies for their review," Lindstrom said. "It's not quite right -- they should have -- but in hindsight, they did discuss the building and the project and essentially what's entailed there."

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), who has criticized federal security projects for encroaching on life in the District, seldom lets slip an opportunity to make her point. In this case, however, Norton "is aware of what's going on but cannot comment," spokeswoman Doxie McCoy said.

A spokeswoman for the planning commission, Lisa MacSpadden, referred questions to Surette, the Navy spokesman. Surette would not say whether the project is classified or whether it had a name. Nor would he say how much it cost, how many people were on the job or why it was needed. He did say that work under the temporary structures would last about four years, that it complied with local and federal safety and environmental laws and that it would have no impact on traffic.

Mall preservationists say they appreciate the Navy's assurances -- as well as its efforts to protect the nation -- but decry the lack of oversight and public meetings by watchdog agencies.

"What is going on?" said Judy Scott Feldman, head of the National Coalition to Save Our Mall, a group of civic and professional organizations in Washington formed in 2000. "Why the Navy would be doing construction is a question . . . And if the Navy is saying it's purely a construction project, then why is it a secret?"

Temporary facilities have a way of outliving their builders, said Feldman, whose group's Web site has posted a photograph of the project. ]]>

The M-80 Stiletto is a prototype naval ship, manufactured by the M-Ship Company, that may go into service with the United States Navy SEALs within a short time frame. It has a top speed of over 50 knots and a range of 750 nautical miles, and is powered by four 1,650 hp engines manufactured by the Caterpillar Company. Weighing only 45 tons unloaded, the vessel is light enough that it can be hoisted onto a cargo ship, while still able to carry up to 20 tons of cargo in the 2,000 square feet of usable interior space. The ship is 88.6 feet in length, with a width of 40 feet and a height of 18.5 feet, yet has a draft of only 2.5 feet.

Even though it has a quite shallow draft, the ship is exceptionally stable on rough seas, due to its wide body. This allows the Stiletto to operate both out at sea, and in shallow water. Its unique Double-M hull channels air underneath the hull, lifting it out of the water, thereby reducing friction and increasing speed while maintaining a shallow draft. Additionally, the ship's hull is faceted in order to deflect radar.

One key feature of this boat is that it can set up a network between the boat and a special forces team by launching an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that would relay information between the team and boat. The Stiletto will also carry surveillance UAVs to provide reconnaissance for the SEAL team, and using a clustered supercomputer on board, will be able to send a real-time image to the team on shore.

The boat is made almost entirely of carbon-fiber, with a base cost of $6,000,000 for a boat, while a fully-equpped boat will be $10,000,000.]]>

Tirosh, located off Route 38, is reportedly one of two Israeli nuclear weapons storage facilities. It is speculated that that Tirosh is the strategic weapons storage site, while Eilabun is the tactical weapons storage site. It is reported that the facility consists of a network of roads linking approximately 70 bunkers, each spaced about 25 yards apart. Hanslope Park was originally acquired by the Foreign Office at a time when Britain's Secret Service was in its infancy and GCHQ-type work was done at nearby Bletchley Park, in the days of Alan Turing.

Hanslope has been massively expanded in more recent decades. Under the title "Her Majesty's Government Communications Centre" (HMGCC), it now houses annexes full of the latest supercomputers.

The Hanslope Park estate (below) is also home to MI6 operatives who process and analyse data sent from Government Communications Headquarters in Cheltenham and Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire, especially data intercepted from the foreign embassies in London.

What appears to be pole (presumably used for mounting the vehicle shape being tested) is located on the centerline of the strip at the southeastern end.

A small complex of buildings is located at the northwest end of the strip (where the entrance road is located), while a larger complex of buildings is located at the southeastern end of the strip.

By comparing the layout of this site with radar cross section testing ranges in Southern CA (particularly the Helendale Range), the physical similarities are obvious, leading to the conclusion that the Wewahotee site is most likely some kind of radar cross section test range.

It most likely is part of the facilities of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control, which employs several thousand people at facilities just a few miles to the northwest.

It is not known if the facility is still actively used.]]>

In a remote area of the China Lake Naval Weapons Range.

The Junction Ranch RCS Range is actually comprised of two ranges, located adjacent to each other. One is a typical horizontal range, but the other is a "look-down" range with a water filled pond. This look-down range, also known as the "Wet Site", simulates a sea surface environment for RCS testing.

The horizontal RCS facility (in the thumbnail) has two pylon locations, one 700' downrange, and one 4,000' downrange. This provides for target positioning for both low and high frequency radars. The pylon is of a low RCS design, 40' in height, and capable of supporting 6,000 pounds. Surprisingly, the surface of the range is compacted soil, rather than the more typical asphalt. The range managers have found this economical design to work quite well, requiring only occasional grading and treatment with soil sterilants.

The Wet Site is centered around a shallow salt water pond 78' wide and 100' long. It contains a 30' diameter hydraulic turntable that may be raised or lowered to provide lookdown angles from 5 to 30 degrees. The radar is located at a slant distance of 17,000 feet. It seems as if this facility, at least in an initial phase, was used in the model testing of the Skunk Works "Sea Shadow" stealth ship.]]>

On November 4, 1982, the Associated Press reported that “the world's first fully submersible drydock, built as part of a CIA plan to raise a sunken Soviet sub, [was] being claimed by the Navy for a new secret project.�? The submersible drydock that the article referred to, called the HMB-1, for Hughes Mining Barge 1, was to be moved from the Todd Shipyards in San Francisco to Redwood City for a “Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. project ‘in which the Navy has an interest.’�?

The entire career of the HMB-1 had been synonymous with secret programs: it had been built through the Howard Hughes Company for the CIA to use in a top-secret mission to raise a Soviet Submarine that had sunk off the coast of Hawaii. Working in tandem with the Glomar Explorer ship, the HMB-1 housed a giant claw to raise the ill-fated sub, and the remains of the sub would stay hidden in the HMB-1 once it had been raised (note: the Speculative Archive’s film refers to these events). When the CIA mission was over, the HMB-1 was given to the National Park Service, who hoped to raise funds by leasing the barge out. But in 1982, the Department of the Interior ordered the barge handed over to the Navy for a new secret project.

The HMB-1 now holds the Sea Shadow.

SEA SHADOW was built in the mid-1980s by Lockheed in the Hughes Mining Barge (HMB-1) in Redwood City, CA. The vehicle is 160-ft. long, 70-ft. wide, displaces 560 tons and has a draft of 14 ft. It has a maximum speed of approximately 13 knots and is powered by a twin screw diesel electronic drive. The ship has a maximum speed of 14 knots and is capable of operating in Sea State 5 (extremely rough) conditions. The vehicle cost approximately $50 million to build and the total test program is approximately $195 million over roughly 10 years. It is owned by the Navy and operated by LMSC personnel.

Described by the Associated Press as the "most influential company most people have never heard of" and by the Asia Times as "the most mysterious and feared of the big defense giants." Like most large defense contractors these days, SAIC doesn’t offer one product: they are instead a kind of "one-stop-shop" for defense needs. They provide everything from technical support to research to psychological operations. Most recently, SAIC was in charge of the Pentagon-sponsored "Iraq Indigenous Media Network," set up as a competitor to Al-Jazeera in occupied Iraq. SAIC hired Robet Reilly, former director of the Voice of America propaganda network to do the job. SAIC’s other commitments include a partnership with Bechtel to manage the Yucca Mountain project, and a huge presence at the secret testing ranges in Nevada and Southern California. Much of SAIC’s work is classified. In conspiracy circles, SAIC is the alleged keeper of the U.S.’ antigravity-propulsion program. Like many stories in the conspiracy lore, there is a grain of fact to this story: in 1990, SAIC produced a study called "Electric Propulsion Study" for the USAF’s then Astronautics Laboratory at Edwards AFB, indicating that SAIC had some competency with bizarre technologies. Several SIGINT tasks are performed at Leitrim. "The Communications Research projects never cease at Leitrim. The operations area is manned on a continuous basis so the bulk of the station's personnel are shift keepers. The primary function of the station during most of its existence almost certainly has been the interception of diplomatic radio traffic between Ottawa and foreign capitals.

Leitrim contains a wide variety of antennae, including a Pusher HF-DF circularly-disposed antenna array (CDAA), three other large circular arrays, four satellite dishes, and a number of other, small antennae

Maintenance of the High Arctic Data Communications System (HADCS), the link between Ottawa and Alert, is conducted out of Leitrim. It is possible that the station also does some processing of intercepts received from Alert through the HADCS. The station also performs signal development (SIG DEV) work and "provides engineering, technical, and special logistics support to the other stations of the [Supplementary Radio] system."

Leitrim's most recent and most important mission, however, is the interception of satellite communications, begun with the installation of a small satellite dish, probably in 1985. By November 1986 at the latest, a medium-sized satellite dish (ca. 10 metres) had been added, and by the end of 1987 two medium-sized dishes were in service. By July 1990, another small dish had been added to the station's inventory, for a total of two medium-sized and two small dishes now in service.

The targets of Leitrim's dishes are probably Mexican and/or Brazilian communications satellites. Both countries' satellite constellations were established in 1985, at about the same time as Leitrim's new dishes started to be installed. A focus on these satellites would also explain CSE's rumoured increase in Spanish language activities.

The Communications Security Establishment (CSE) is Canada's national Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) organization. SIGINT, as defined by the Canadian government, is "all processes involved in, and information and technical material derived from, the interception and study of foreign communications and non-communications electromagnetic emissions."[1] Subcategories include intelligence derived from communications, also known as Communications Intelligence (COMINT), intelligence derived from non-communications emissions such as radar, also known as Electronics Intelligence (ELINT), and intelligence derived from the telemetry transmissions of missiles or other equipment undergoing testing, also known as Telemetry Intelligence (TELINT). Note that SIGINT is restricted to foreign emissions under the Canadian government definition.

Strictly speaking, CSE is only part of Canada's SIGINT effort. A civilian agency of the Department of National Defence, CSE processes SIGINT, produces analyses, and disseminates reports to Canadian and allied consumer agencies. The actual collection of the SIGINT, however, is conducted by the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio System (SRS), a component of the Canadian Armed Forces that operates under the direction of CSE.

CSE and the SRS in turn work in close co-operation with the giant American and British SIGINT agencies, the National Security Agency (NSA) and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), Australia's Defence Signals Directorate (DSD), New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), and a number of other SIGINT agencies in a global intelligence alliance known informally as the UKUSA community. CSE maintains permanent liaison officers at NSA HQ at Fort Meade, Maryland (CANSLO/W) and GCHQ in Cheltenham, UK (CANSLO/L). Site R is the Alternate Joint Communications Center (AJCC) located in Raven Rock mountain [hence the name Site R] just over the Pennsylvania State Line near Waynesboro, Pa. The DISA Site-R Computer Operations staff provides computer services to the NCA, the Joint Staff, the OSD and other DoD agencies through Memorandums of Agreement (MOAs). The facility functions as the disaster recovery site for the JSSC's GMC and DISA GCC. The various service [Army, Navy and Air Force] Emergency Operations Centers (AFEOC) are also located at Site R. Support is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The facility's Operations Center, DCS Technical Control Facility, the Northeast Dial Service Assistance Center and Information Center provide planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of over 38 communications systems (switching, transmission, data distribution, visual information, and power generation) that support the various customers of the Alternate Joint Communications Center Site R.]]>

This is an interesting building onthe edge of Fort Meade. It is very secure but flipping to map mode it looks like it isn't actually on Fort Meade like the rest of the NSA Complex.

Map mode says it is on Joseph H Ream Road and Ream was once a director of NSA so I assume it is an NSA site.

BIG airconditioning in back. Perhaps this is a data processing center. The front entrance is fairly fancy. Small parking lot.

The bunker is in the clearing to the south of the two small buildings in building 710 per this map.

The building, now known as Building 710, was built under three feet of earth, having 36,000 square feet on two levels. Construction materials consisted of concrete and steel. Concrete was chosen for its ability to shield occupants from gamma rays, and steel added strength. The facility was built to have a fallout protection factor of 1,000 and was designed to withstand the worst nuclear attack. A power system was fed by main and back-up generators, having sensors that would automatically switch to batteries if a change in current was detected. Water was supplied by a 5,000-gallon water tank, with a back-up 800-foot deep well. A fire tank, and ground water sump pumps could provide additional water for emergencies. An air intake shaft was equipped with a shut off sensor, which would trigger a filtration system designed to remove radioactive particles. Communications facilities were contained in a “metal box�? room designed to shield sensitive equipment from electromagnetic pulse. A forty-acre field containing ten aboveground, and two belowground antennae was built adjacent to the structure. The building was designed to hold up to 300 personnel for up to 30 days with food and lodging facilities.

Architectural Description

This building is a 2-level, square, underground facility constructed of concrete and steel. Its lower level is completely below ground, and its upper level is partially below ground, with earthen bermed walls and three feet of earth fill covering its roof. All that can be seen of the structure from the exterior include its concrete entrances, mechanical equipment, a few pipes, and antennae which rise from the Large grassed mound. The east, main entrance is a concrete 5 x 2 bay square, set into the east elevation of the mound. It has a central, double aluminum-frame door that is flanked on each side by fixed-pane, aluminum-sash window. The north and south elevations of the entrance each have two fixed-pane window bays. The roof to the entrance is flat, composed of reinforced concrete. A concrete overhanging eave above the doors and windows is supported by triangular pilasters, which separate the window bays.]]>

The Federal Region Center for Region X (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington) is an underground office facility located in a refurbished decommissioned Nike missile site.

Constructed on the site of a decommissioned Nike missile site, the Bothell FRC is one of six similar operations centers built during the late 1960s. Total cost of design, construction, etc. was $1,860,000 (estimated cost of constructing a similar building in 1983 was over $25 million, and the cost today would easily exceed $40 million). The building itself is a subterranean office structure designed to be reasonably survivable in the event of foreseeable natural or man-made disasters.

The multifunctional Don radar had a shape of a truncated pyramid with equal length and width (100 meters), and height of 45 meters. Phased arrays with diameter of 16 meters each were mounted on four sides of the pyramid. Along with the digital processing of incoming signals and information, this radar features an antimissile missile control channel and a wide range of probing signals, making its operation possible in various modes. The resolution characteristics of the radar are excellent, and it can see space objects a few centimeters in size.

Building of the radar began in 1978, and it reached full operational capability around 1989. The modified Don 2NP large multifunction phased-array radar at Pushkino is an integral part of the A-135 Moscow ABM system. The radar, which has 360-degree coverage, provides support for GAZELLE and GORGON interceptor systems.]]>

I haven't found many details about this place. It is referenced in an article that names it in reference to some tests of the French Syracuse Military Communications Satellite.

Note that there are two perimeters and most parking is outside the outer fence.

Two large dishes and a smaller dish are both inside the inner perimeter.

Interesting L-shaped arrays in the NW and SE corners.

The Australian goverment wants Google Maps to remove this image and this image from their database.

Pine Gap, near Alice Springs, employs nearly 1,000 people, mainly from the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office. Originally code-named MERINO, it is the ground station for a satellite network that intercepts telephone, radio, data links, and other communications around the world. The facility currently includes a dozen radomes, a 5,600 square meter computer room, and 20-odd service and support buildings. Two of its ground antenna are part of the U.S. Defense Satellite Communications System.

In 1988 a new 10-year lease for the US facilities was signed by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke. The agreement specified a three-year notification period which required the Australian government to give notice in 1995 to close both Nurrungar and Pine Gap in 1998, when the leases come up for renewal. Australia arranged to have greater access to the information collected by the bases.

When Nurrungar closed in 2000, some Nurrungar hardware and personnel was moved to Pine Gap.

The Rye Canyon corporate campus is located in a cul-de sac-against the hills for a good reason: it was built by the Lockheed Corporation for classified military work associated with the Stealth Fighter program. Mostly vacated by Lockheed now, the office park is part of a larger office park development, though Lockheed?s Skunkworks still uses the anechoic chamber building (Building 246) for secret military work. Other tenants are beginning to move in. The largest new tenant is a company called Advanced Bionics, which designs mechanical body parts such as the Cochlear implant.

The major use of the property however has been as a film location, marketed as a "multi-faceted film facility" by its developers, the Legacy Company. It frequently hosted the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and other video-based television productions. Location scouts have commented that it looks more like Silicon Valley than anywhere else in Los Angeles. The offices and computer rooms in Building 34 - originally a "quiet building," designed to be impenetrable to external surveillance, as it housed design operations for new weapons systems - are favored as locations, and the old high bays in back, which once housed Stealth Fighter flight simulators, are often used as property shops. CBS TV has used this building as a location for a pilot for a proposed series called The Agency, about the FBI. The television show Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) used the site so much it set up production offices here. The series VIP has also shot here, and used Building 3 as a stand in for the CIA. The California Institute of the Arts (coincidentally also abbreviated "CIA") temporarily operated out of this office park after the Northridge earthquake.]]>

The TRW Capistrano Test Site is a remote, 2,700 acre R&D complex in the hills at the edge of Camp Pendleton, operated by TRW's Defense Space Systems Group.
