The Château d'Hérouville is a French château of the 18th century (1740) located in the village of Hérouville, in the Oise valley near Paris. The castle was built in 1740 by Gaudot, an architect of the school of Rome. In the 19th century, it was used as courier relay station (between Versailles and Beauvais) and stabled a hundred horses. The composer Michel Magne purchased it in 1962 and converted it into a residential recording studio after a fire devastated the left wing of the building in 1969. The musician, director and sound engineer Laurent Thibault took over management of the studio in June 1974. Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Bee Gees, T.Rex, Joan Armatrading and Pink Floyd have all recorded here. The studio closed on July 25, 1985]]>

He helped to raise global awareness of the gulag and the Soviet Union's forced labor camp system from 1918 to 1956. Howard Brody was considered to be one of the biggest drug lords in the United States in the 1980s. Donald Singer of the architectural firm Singer Architects built "The Fortress" for Brody. The home was later taken from Mr. Brody as one of the first homes ceased by the US Government during the Rico Act. The RICO Act was partially due to Howard Brody. Brody was a drug dealer that fled the country with $50 million in drug money. Brody paid two FBI Agents $5 million each to join him in South America. After a while, the two Federal Agents turned themselves and Brody in. President Clinton gave Brody a pardon after paying the $50 million back to the government.

One of the most notable features of the home is what was once known as “the Gun Room”. The “Gun Room” is situated at the corner of the structure and has a direct view of the gates of the estate. If you were not a welcomed guest, you were made very aware of this fact in no time. Within the privacy of its walls this estate also boosts of being the only home in Broward County with its own private inlet.

Alexander Duncan McRae was a successful businessman, a Major General in the Canadian Army in First World War, a Member of Parliament, a Canadian Senator and a farmer.

After McRae settled in Vancouver in 1907 he proceeded to build a mansion for his family, to become known as Hycroft Manor, in Shaughnessy, an exclusive suburb of Vancouver. The home was built on the brow of a hill on 5.5 acres of land. The land upon which the 30 room, 3 story mansion was built cost $10,000 and the construction, completed in 1911 cost $100,000. The house was designed by Vancouver architect Thomas Hooper. After the death of his wife Blanche in 1942, McRae donated Hycroft Manor and the adjacent Hycroft Tower to the government of Canada. Hycroft Tower was to be used as a hospital for wounded veterans. Once converted, it housed 130 beds. In recent years, Hycroft Manor has become the home of the University Woman's Club, and is home in that capacity to a variety of high-society driven charity balls and other events. The French Olympic Team used the building during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. It is also heavily used by Vancouver's film and television production industry as a set.

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant traveler from the Venetian Republic whose travels are recorded in Il Milione, a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned about trading whilst his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, travelled through Asia and apparently met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa; Marco was imprisoned, and dictated his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had three children. He died in 1324, and was buried in San Lorenzo.

Their pioneering journey inspired Christopher Columbus and others. Marco Polo's other legacies include Venice Marco Polo Airport, the Marco Polo sheep, and several books and films. He also had an influence on European cartography, leading to the introduction of the Fra Mauro map.

La Fiorentina was built in 1917 by the countess Therese de Beauchamp on a vast piece of land which occupies the extreme end of the Saint Hospice point of the Saint Jean Cap Ferrat peninsula.

Beauchamp later sold the property to Sir Edmund Davis, a diamond magnate and a large art collector. During this period, the famous Italian writer, Gabriele d’Annunzio stays in the property, just a short time before he is proclaimed lord and prince of Monte-Nevoso. In 1939, La Fiorentina was purchased by Lady Kenmere, who was sometimes viciously referred to as “Lady Kilmore” with reference to her three ex husbands who had passed away. It was the son of her last husband Roderick Cameron, who was passionate about landscaping and gardens, the man who opened the Golden Riviera. Cameron organized large parties and received many celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, Somerset Maugham who loved to play bridge with the hostess. Even though the park has been reduced to 30 000 m², the Villa Fiorentina with its two swimming pools, remains one of the largest properties on Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.

Born on April 14, 1956, Drohobych, Ukraine, Soviet Union, he graduated from the Moscow Transportation Engineering Institute in 1979. In 1993, he became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Renova, one of Russia's most progressive investment and business development companies. After working as an engineer in an obscure state lab for many years, Vekselberg moved to business in 1990. He rose to prominence after Boris Yeltsin's reelection in 1996 as co-owner and chairman of Tyumen Oil (TNK), one of Russia's largest oil and gas companies. Investigation of the paper trail by Alexey Navalny and the Rospil project has found several invalid and backdated documents, thus suggesting collusion (e.g. the tender held by the Hungarian side was totally fictive, as the building was already sold by that time). Hungarian officials responsible for the deal (Tátrai Miklós, Marta Horvathne Fekszi and Arpad Szekely) were detained in February 2011, but no criminal investigation was started on the Russian side.

A call to the doctor's office confirmed the prescription was fraudulent, police said. The doctor's assistant also told the pharmacist the doctor's signature was not legitimate, according to police. When Jack returned to CVS, he was told to wait, but he decided to leave. However, a store employee followed him outside and recorded the license plate number of Jack's black Range Rover. The plate corresponded to an address in Westport on North Avenue where Jack now apparently lives, but a further check by Fairfield police showed the plate was once registered to the Sasco Hill address, where his ex-wife now lives, according to police. Police contacted Jack on his cell phone, prompting him to apologize, police said, and request a meeting at police headquarters. Jack allegedly told police he knew what he did was wrong and, according to police Lt. Jim Perez, he was then brought to the detention area of police headquarters."

Firefighters battling an Ocean County, N.J., blaze found something hidden within the home’s walls that put the owner in deep trouble with the law, according to New Jersey State Police.

Firefighters arrived Tuesday to the blaze on the 500 block of Dock Road in West Creek, Eagleswood Township to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof, authorities said.

As firefighters from at least five municipalities battled the blaze, they worked to make sure the fire wasn’t spreading so they began to pull back the sheet rock ceilings, according to state police.

As they did, child pornography materials fell down from the ceiling, cops said.

The homeowner, Gamal El-Zoghby, 75, was arrested and hit with child endangerment charges stemming from the porn discovery, according to police.

El-Zoghby, who is an architect listed as a professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., and reportedly designed the home, was processed and released, authorities said.

Police didn’t say how much child porn was found in the home.
The cause of the blaze remained under investigation as of Wednesday night.]]>

Locals refer to it as the Cave House and the nickname is apt. Sitting on 37 acres just outside of Bisbee, AZ, a mining town-turned-Baby Boomer retirement haven about 80 miles from Tucson, the Chulo Canyon Cave House is carved into an outcropping of granite boulder, extending more than 2,000-square feet into a desert grotto. This home was featured on the homepage of Yahoo's website on January 17, 2012 by way of Forbes' website. The home is built in the side of the Mule Mountains. The Mule Mountains are a north/south running mountain range located in the south-central area of Cochise County, Arizona. The highest peak, Mount Ballard, rises to 7,500 ft (2,300 m).

The strange and unusual dwelling is up for grabs and could be yours for $1.5 million. It occupies 2,890-square feet of living space and comes with a 890-square foot guest house, a subterranean game room underneath the guest house, a library building, a stand-alone workshop space, a separate home office, and a carport. The main house features rough petrous walls, rock and cement ceilings, and potable wall water seep that is collected from a natural spring. Located in Ridgefield, CT, this minimalist modern mansion sprung from the design table of Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, part of the THINK team who competed to design the new World Trade Center. The home was also featured on the homepage of Yahoo's website and in an article about "extreme fireplaces" and on CNBC's website on January 10, 2012.

It has 50-mile views, with the highest views reserved for the kings of the castle: The master bedroom is located in a tower. The art gallery-esque residence has a bold inverted-pyramid fireplace design reminiscent of Aztec architecture. This estate has been on and off the market several times since 2008, when it had a starting price of $10 million. On December 28, 2010, through warranty deeds, the house was donated to Fairfield University located in Fairfield, Connecticut. The donation has spurred questions about why it was donated and for what purpose.

The family had no historical connection to Fairfield, but Robert Bercham, of Milford, CT, the family's lawyer did. He is a Fairfield graduate and from 1990-1996 sat on the university's Board of Trustees. He is now a trustee at the University of Bridgeport. The home was designed for Alice Lawrence, the widow of a Manhattan real estate developer known for her discerning eye and tenacious spirit, who died in 2008. This house, located in the Glen Echo section of Bethesda, Maryland is sited on a heavily wooded lot overlooking the Potomac River. Glen Echo stands as a rare enclave of modern houses, several miles North West of Washington, DC. The home is a two-story contemporary home that was designed in 2008 by architect Robert M. Gurney, FAIA. It was the winner of the AIA Custom Home Award for 2008. It is located next door to a newer contemporary home that the architect also designed.

The new house occupies the footprint of a pre-existing house in an effort to minimally disturb the site, removing no mature hardwoods in the process. A new swimming pool is suspended twenty feet above grade to further reduce the impact to the steeply sloping site. In an effort to lessen his dependence on the automobile, the owner/ builder required that his office become part of his residential compound. The office is located on the ground floor of a detached structure separated from the main residence by a reflecting pool. That structure also contains a garage on the first level and a guest suite above. Translucent glass and panels of Kalwall are used to allow the building to serve as a lantern to the main house at night.

Structural pre-cast concrete planks are employed throughout the project in effort to expedite the construction process, span large open areas and to provide the ability to heat the house hydronically. Combined with a 5” concrete slab and terrazzo flooring the structural system provides additional passive heating. Large overhangs on the glazed southern wall and the tree canopy minimize solar gain in the summer.

Wood siding is combined with soft gray terne coated stainless steel and black steel window frames to provide an exterior material palette that fits comfortably in the landscape. Bluestone, gravel and water complete the palette.Interior materials such as white terrazzo flooring, white oak cabinetry and aluminum compliment the light filled and minimally detailed space. The creation of this atmosphere refocuses one’s attention outward, allowing the owner to reconnect with the inherently picturesque site already preserved through the design.

The editors rounded up a selection of futuristic abodes that challenge traditional McMansion layouts. Some are relatively new homes designed with green living in mind while others are the decades-old brick and mortar visions of celebrated artists.

This brightly-hued, rectangular 10,000-square foot manse, built in 2010, was designed by architect Robert M. Gurney, FAIA sits overlooking the Potomac River and boasts heated floors, glass bridges, a five-car garage and an infinity pool. There are 4 bedrooms,5 full bathrooms, and 2 half bathrooms. The home is currently for sale for $6,999,000. The home appears to be in the construction phase from when the images were taken in the BEV.

Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. is a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ stock market under the ticker, JBSS, and is a processor and marketer of tree nuts and peanuts in the United States. Its principal products are raw and processed nuts, and it is the parent company of Fisher Nuts. Mr. Sanfilippo was the chairman and CEO of John B. Sanfilippo and Sons Inc., and he worked with the company for his entire professional career, starting in 1953 until his retirement in 2008. He currently holds the title of Chairman Emeritus and is a Director at the company.

The Sanfilippo 'Place de la Musique' is known worldwide for its magnificent collection of beautifully restored antique music machines, phonographs, arcade and gambling machines, chandeliers, art glass, the world's largest restored theatre pipe organ, the most spectacular European salon carousel in existence, street and tower clocks, steam engines and other functional mechanical antiques, displayed within a breathtaking French Second Empire setting located in village of Barrington Hills, Illinois.

On July22, 2011, federal prosecutors seized the distinctive blue-roofed Skaneateles mansion that they say was built with drug money dating from the 1980s. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Clymer said Charles Ludwig Blomquist III, 52, a Skaneateles resident with a history of drug and money-laundering convictions, spent $1.7 million in cash to build the home. Charles Blomquist and his ex-wife, Dorothea Wied Blomquist, were the listed owners of the property from 1994 to 2004, according to court papers. Then he put ownership in his daughter’s name, Christie Blomquist of Westport, CT, to conceal his involvement, the papers said.

This 5,996 square foot lakefront home has 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms on 3.2 acres of land overlooking Skaneateles Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The current assessed value of the home is $1,424,600. The home was built in 2003, and the construction process is present in images. The Skaneateles mansion is assessed at $1.4 million. The two-story, three-bedroom house has a pool, tennis court, boathouse, fireplace, covered porches and an acre on the lakefront, according to the property records.

People in diners and bars were struck by its gaudiness, started calling it “the castle” and speculated about the guy who’d built it, said Charles Major, the former town supervisor. “People long suspected drug money,” Major said. Shortly after construction began, Blomquist built a berm along the road, then planted trees on it, blocking the view of the lake of his neighbor across the street, Major said. Blomquist later cut down trees along the lakeshore, loosening the soil and causing mud to pour into the lake, Major said. That, together with the home’s appearance and the fact that no one lived in it, created a buzz, he said.

Blomquist pleaded guilty on Friday, July 22, 2011 in federal court to conspiracy to commit money-laundering, failure to report foreign bank accounts and tax fraud. He admitted he’d built the home and put money into a Swiss bank account with criminal profits, but he would not concede that the money was from drug-dealing. Neither he nor his lawyer would comment on the criminal activity. Clymer said the home and the foreign bank account, which once held more than $1 million, were the result of selling cocaine and marijuana starting in the 1980s. As part of his guilty plea, Blomquist agreed to forfeit his interest in the home. The federal government plans to take possession of it, Clymer said. Blomquist and federal prosecutors agreed he would be sentenced to 87 months in prison, which must be approved by U.S. District Judge Norman Mordue. Sentencing was on November 22, 2011.]]>

The E Arthur Davenport is an early Prairie Style House, not quite as complex as other houses built around that year by Frank Lloyd Wright, but nonetheless displaying Prairie characteristics. The E Arthur Davenport House is cruciform in plan (like the Ward Willets House, also built in 1901), with a large central portion protruding closer to the front of the property line. Bhutan House is an estate located in Kalimpong, West Bengal, India, owned by the Dorji family of Bhutan. The site is the traditional administrative Dzong for southern Bhutan, and also functioned as the administrative center for the whole of western Bhutan during the early years of consolidation. It represented the relationship between Bhutan and British India, and is a modern symbol of Bhutan–India relations.

John Emil List (September 17, 1925 - March 21, 2008) was an American murderer. On November 9, 1971, he murdered his wife, mother, and three children in Westfield, New Jersey, and then disappeared. He had planned everything so meticulously that nearly a month passed before anyone noticed that anything was amiss. A fugitive from justice for nearly 18 years, he was finally apprehended on June 1, 1989 after the story of his murders was broadcast on America's Most Wanted. List was found guilty and sentenced to five consecutive terms of life imprisonment, dying in prison custody in 2008 at age 82.]]>
