It contains the headquarters for the U.S. military presence in Korea, known as United States Forces Korea, or USFK. The site had previously been headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army from 1910-1945.

The garrison comprises 2.5 km². (630 acres) in the heart of Korea's capital, with a golf driving range, four-star hotel and 440,000 square m (4.7 million square ft) of floor space in hundreds of buildings. The garrison is made up of two main parts, Main Post (North Post) and South Post, which are physically divided by a four-lane boulevard that links two Seoul districts together. In January 2004 a major bridge was constructed over this boulevard to solve traffic congestion problems.

Camp Coiner, covering approximately 50 acres (200,000 m2) on Yongsan Garrison's northern edge, is named after 2nd Lt. Randall Coiner, a Korean War Silver Star recipient. Since the Korean War it has served as Korea's primary inprocessing facility for Army troops. Camp Coiner has been a self-sufficient compound with its own network of barracks, shopping, and entertainment, though in recent decades it has become more integrated with Yongsan Garrison.

Yongsan Garrison is located within Yongsan-gu district of Seoul. East of the garrison is the commercial district of Itaewon, with its westernized shopping and nightlife. To the west of Yongsan is the Samgakji subway station and Yongsan Electronics Market.
The M1 is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the 37th Armored Regiment.

It is a main battle tank, the well armed, heavily armored, and highly mobile offensive mainstay of modern armored ground warfare. Notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service.

The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the M60 Patton and M48A5. It did, however, serve for over a decade alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. It is the principal combat tank of the United States Army and the Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and as of 2007, Australia.

As of 16 May 1999, it was comprised of 16,164 acres divided into lettered training areas A through H and J, as well as 13,000 acres of land currently under development for additional training areas. As a result of the 16 January 2002 transfer, RTLS' acreage was increased to 19,938.
The 923 acres of training areas A through C consist of a Unit Training Equipment Site (UTES #1), a temporary bivouac area, a Bailey bridge site and Gunnery Table IV (MILES) range, used primarily by M-1 Abrams main battle tanks, as well as a two unit armory and 260-person barracks. Training Area C includes a Simulation Center, containing an M-1 Abrams Full-Integration Simulation Trainer and a Fire Systems Combined Artillery Training Simulator. An M-1 Mechanized Conduct of Fire Trainer is also located within training area C. Training areas D through H consist of 1,421 acres of wooded area available for dismounted training and field bivouac of troops, with a small amount of off-road vehicular maneuver area. Ground was broken for the new UTES # 1 prior to the end of fiscal year 2000. This facility is located south of the Simulation Center.

Arlington Hall (also called Arlington Hall Station) was the headquarters of the US Army's Signal Intelligence Service (SIS) cryptography effort during World War II. It was named for its location in Arlington Hall Station, Arlington, Virginia—a private girls' school which was commandeered during the War. Arlington Hall was in many respects similar to Bletchley Park in England, though military and only one of two primary cryptography operations in Washington during the War (the other was the Naval Communications Annex, also housed in a commandeered private girls' school). Arlington concentrated its efforts on the Japanese systems (including PURPLE) while Bletchley Park concentrated on European combatants. Arlington Hall eventually became one of the organizations and facilities of the National Security Agency after it was created.

The Arlington Hall effort was comparable in influence to other Anglo-American WW II-era technological efforts, such as the cryptographic work at Bletchley Park, the Naval Communications Annex, development of sophisticated microwave radar at MIT's Radiation Lab, and the Manhattan Project's development of nuclear weapons.

After World War II, the "Russian Section" at Arlington Hall expanded. Work on diplomatic messages benefited from additional technical personnel and new analysts—among them Samuel Chew, who had focused on Japan, and linguist Meredith Gardner, who had worked on both German and Japanese messages. Chew had considerable success at defining the underlying structure of the coded Russian texts. Gardner and his colleagues began analytically reconstructing the KGB codebooks. Late in 1946, Gardner broke the codebook's "spell table" for encoding English letters. With the solution of this spell table, SIS could read significant portions of messages that included English names and phrases. Gardner soon found himself reading a 1944 message listing prominent atomic scientists, including several with the Manhattan Project. Efforts to decipher Soviet codes continued under the super secret Venona project.

Another problem soon arose—that of determining how and to whom to disseminate the extraordinary information Gardner was developing. SIS's reporting procedures did not seem appropriate because the decrypted messages could not even be paraphrased for Arlington Hall's regular intelligence customers without divulging their source. By 1946, SIS knew nothing about the federal grand jury impaneled in Manhattan to probe the espionage and disloyalty charges stemming from Elizabeth Bentley's defection and other defectors from Soviet intelligence, so no one in the US Government was aware that evidence against the Soviets was suddenly developing on two adjacent tracks. In late August or early September 1947, the FBI was informed that the Army Security Agency had begun to break into Soviet espionage messages.

By 1945 the Soviets had penetrated Arlington Hall with the placement of Bill Weisband who worked there for several years. The Government’s knowledge of his treason apparently was not revealed until its publication in a 1990 book co-authored by a high-level KGB defector.

In October 1949, the British spy Kim Philby arrived in Washington as British intelligence liaison to the U.S. intelligence community. Part of his responsibilities involved receiving VENONA material which the U.S. was providing to the UK In April 1951, a decoded VENONA message showed that Donald MacLean, who had served as Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Washington in 1944 and 1945 (and returned in 1947 to work on atomic energy issues), was “HOMER,” a Soviet spy. Surveillance of MacLean commenced in order to obtain evidence independent of VENONA, as the U.S. and UK did not want to reveal publicly the existence of the project, but MacLean defected to Moscow with Guy Burgess in May 1951.

The M1 Abrams main battle tank is the principal combat tank of the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps, with three main versions being deployed starting in 1980: the M1, M1A1, and M1A2. The latest versions of the M1A2 have a new armor and electronics package. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the Army's 37th Armored Regiment.
