At that time radar sites were highly secret and no information concerning them was publicly released until the war had ended.

CH radar was developed in the late 1930s to provide advance warning of enemy bombers and was the first major operational radar system. By the start of the war nineteen stations covered the East Coast of Britain from Scotland to the Isle of Wight. By 1941 the chain had been extended to the West Coast with only remote north-west Scotland unprotected.

During the German occupation of France, German bombers were based in France. They attacked industrial targets in the Irish Sea area by flying around the South Coast in preference to the more direct, but dangerous, route across England. Manx radar stations played an important part in providing surveillance of the Irish Sea area.

CH proved its worth during the Battle of Britain when Germany sought to gain air supremacy in readiness for the planned invasion of Britain. CH allowed the small force of British fighter aircraft to be directed to the appropriate areas for intercepting enemy aircraft.

CH radar stations were positioned so as to provide a clear view over the sea. They used large static aerials, which were quite unlike a modern radar system, such as that in use today at Ronaldsway Airport, which sends out a narrow radio beam scanning the surrounding area. Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) operators used electronic and electromechanical aids to calculate the distance, height and bearing of approaching aircraft. Friendly aircraft were fitted with special radio equipment known as IFF (Identification, Friend or Foe), which responded to the CH radar signals and allowed them to be identified on the radar display.

Construction of Cregneish CHL appears to have started in 1939, but the three CH sites on the Island were not operational fully operational until 1941. The technical buildings for CH were duplicated to allow work to continue during maintenance or equipment failure and were constructed from reinforced concrete with massive blast walls. The transmitter aerials were suspended between 325 ft high steel masts stabilised by steel guy ropes and the receiving aerials were mounted on 240 ft high wooden towers. The buildings for CHL were of much lighter construction and the equipment was more frequently updated. CH and CHL stations were both given a high security classification and were provided with barracks blocks and security guards.

The technical buildings on the Island’s CH stations have long since lost their camouflage netting together with much of their earth covering. They are now in retirement, often serving as over-engineered farm sheds or animal shelters. The buildings at Scarlett are visible from the Coastal Footpath, as are those at Dalby from the main road. All the CHL technical buildings at Meayll Hill have disappeared, but the concrete and brick foundations still remain.

If you are only interested in using the place as a residence then you have your choice of 16 buildings to choose from. The Power Dome alone is 125' in diameter with about a 65' center ceiling. That's more than 12,000 square feet of open space. You could literally build any type of typical house INSIDE the Power Dome - if that was what you wanted to do. OR You could remodel all or part of the Control Dome, which itself is a 100' diameter two story dome containing over 7800 square feet in the first floor alone. OR you could decide to live in one of the THREE, four story equipment terminal buildings that contain about 1200 square feet of floor space on EACH floor!! OR you could build an apartment in the AIR INTAKE BUILDING, which OVERLOOKS the Power Dome so you could have an UNDERGROUND APARTMENT WITH A VIEW!! The Air Intake Building is 60' in diameter with about a 20' high ceiling!! That works out to about 2800 square feet of living space. OR you could choose to live in one or BOTH of the Antenna SILOS - They are 30' in diameter with about a 40' ceiling ON THE FIRST FLOOR! The lower level is also 30' in diameter with about a 20' ceiling. ADDITIONALLY, if you chose to live in one or both of the Antenna Silos, you could retrofit the ANTENNA SILO - SILO DOORS - each weighing about 50 tons - with a new hydraulic opening system and then you could have your own push button 100-ton opening skylight. And if you really wanted to go whole hog, you could live in the bottom of one of the 155’ tall MISSILE SILOS and retrofit the 150 ton SILO DOORS so you could push a button and open them up – 155’ above the floor!!

It has a shorter effective range and lower engagement altitude than either of its predecessors and also flies slower, but due to its two-stage design it is more effective against more maneuverable targets. It is also able to engage lower flying targets than the previous systems, and being more modern it is much more resistant to ECM than the SA-2. The 5V24 (V-600) missiles reach around Mach 3 to 3.5 in flight, both stages powered by solid fuel rocket motors. The SA-3, like the SA-2, uses radio command guidance. The naval version of this system has the NATO reporting name SA-N-1 Goa and original designation M-1 Volna (Russian Волна – wave).

These were replaced by Tornadoes with four squadrons (2, 15, 16,and 20) resident. After the first Gulf War, many of the squadrons were relocated, No. 2 Sqn going back to RAF Marham; and 15, 16, and 20 becoming reserve squadrons. When RAF Gütersloh closed, the Harriers of 3(F) and IV(AC) squadrons moved in along with the helicopters of 18(B) Squadron. Laarbruch was also home to 1 and 26 Squadron RAF Regiment. 18 Squadron returned to RAF Odiham in 1997 with the remaining Harrier squadrons departing to RAF Cottesmore in 1999.

After closing in 1999 the airfield found a new civilian lease of life as the budget airline airport Flughafen Niederrhein (Lower Rhine Airport), now known as Weeze Airport after the nearest large village. The Airfield site is now open (late 2006) to the public. It is a very eerie sensation for ex service personnel to walk around. The lawns etc. in front of SHQ are kept tidy. The Walter-Bachmann-Flugzeugbau KG, as it was later called, turned the fisher's and farmer's town into a seat of war-essential production. Moore Army Airfield was declared excess when Fort Devens was downgraded to a training area, and was closed in the late 1990s. By the time of its closure, two of the original runways had been abandoned, and the longest runway was still maintained (14/32, approximately 4,700 ft long). Two helicopter runways (2/20 & 15/33, each approximately 500 ft long) were located at the northeast corner of the airfield. The closure of Fort Devens meant some relief for local residents from the noise from Army helicopters. However the runway at Devens, Moore AAF, still exists, and there are unverified reports that Moore may be turned into a local airport. Since its closure, it has been used to store police vehicles, and to run auto races.
