Upstream of the dam is the main tributary of the Rio Sacro, with the homonymous valley in the Middle Ages was the seat of an abbey of Benedictine monks, St. Salvatore in Rio Sacro.

Once part of the Horti Liciniani on the Esquiline Hill, now it faces the modern via Giolitti. Contrary to its mis-attributed name, it is in fact a 4th century dodecagonal nymphaeum of opus latericium, whose full dome only collapsed in 1828, surrounded on three sides with other chambers added at a later date. There is no mention of it in ancient literature or inscriptions.

Ġgantija is a megalithic temple complex on the Mediterranean island of Gozo (part of Malta), constructed by the Sicani tribe from the Italian island of Sicily, when the people first inhabited Malta.[1] The two temples of Ġgantija on the island of Gozo are notable for their gigantic Neolithic structures, which were erected during the Neolithic Age (c. 3600-2500 BC). At more than 5500 years old, the Ġgantija temples amongst the world's oldest free-standing structures and the world's oldest religious structures. The temples were possibly the site of an Earth Mother Goddess Fertility Cult, with numerous figurines and statues found on site believed to be connected with that cult.

In the Maltese language, Ġgantija means "belonging to the giants". According to local Gozitan legend, the temples were built by the giants who resided in Gozo during ancient times. It is said that the temples themselves were used by the giants as watchtowers.

The first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, established in the 8th century AD. On the banks of the Brahmaputra (Tsangpo in Tibetan) river.

The low satellite-photo resolution available for this area is unfortunate: Samye's overall design is a mandala, with its central temple representing Mount Meru, and the temples arranged concentrically around it representing the oceans & continents that surround Meru in Buddhist cosmology. At the center of the main temple is a pole the that represents the center of the universe.]]>

Originally planned to be 150m high, only the 72m-wide brick base was completed before King Bodawpaya, who ordered its construction in 1790, died in 1819 and further work was abandoned. An 1838 earthquake created a dramatic crack in its sides.

Just to the north of the paya hangs the Mingun Bell, said to be the world's largest uncracked, 5m wide at the base and about 4m high. Visitors are welcome to stand inside it while someone on the outside gives it a bonk or two.

Other Buddhist temples and shrines dot the area. Reachable by a short boat ride up the Irrawaddy from Mandalay, 10km away.]]>
