It was built between 1854-1859 by the Neolog Jewish community of Pest according to the plans of the Viennese architect Ludwig Foerster. The synagogue neighbors a major Budapest thoroughfare expressing the optimism and the newly elevated status of the Hungarian Jews in the mid years of the 19th century.

It is a monumental, magnificent synagogue, with a capacity of 2,964 seats (1,492 for men and 1,472 in the women's galleries) making it one of the largest in the world. The building has a length of more than 53 meters while its width has 26.5 meters. The design of the Dohány Street synagogue, while basically in a Moorish style, also features a mixture of Byzantine, Romantic, and Gothic elements.

In 1991 a monument dedicated to the memory of the Hungarian Jews who perished in the Holocaust was installed in the rear courtyard of the synagogue, in a small park named for Raoul Wallenberg. The Holocaust memorial, the work of Imre Varga, resembles a weeping willow whose leaves bear inscriptions with the names of the victims and boasts the inscription Whose agony is greater than mine. 240 non-Jewish Hungarians "righteous among the nations", who saved Jews during the Holocaust, are inscribed on four large marble plaques. The memorial was made possible by the generous support of the New York based Emanuel Foundation for Hungarian Culture, with funds raised from private donors. The National Jewish Museum (Orszagos Zsido Vallasi es Torteneti Gyujtemeny) is located within the synagogue compound.

Today the Great Synagogue in Dohány Street, for a long time one of the most renowned landmarks of Budapest, is serving as the main synagogue of the local Jewish community as well as a major tourist attraction.
Construction began on the Sixth & I Street Historic Synagogue in 1906, after architect Louis Levi and builder Arthur Cowsill satisfied District of Columbia engineers that the 45-foot span reinforced concrete foundation – new technology for the time – would hold the weight of the building committee, the engineers and seventy two courses of heavy brick, and, by implication, of the entire building.
"The new temple of worship," noted the Washington Post on January 5, 1908, "although not so large as a number of other churches in the city, is considered, from an architectural point of view to be one of the finest in Washington. It is built of light gray vitrified brick, with handsome terra cotta trimmings and unglazed red tile roof. There are five domes, a large one in the center, forty feet in diameter, and smaller ones in each corner. The style of architecture is a combination of modernized French and Byzantine. The trimmings over the entrances are rich in decorative effect and harmonious in their proportions."
"The chief feature of the interior," the Post continued, "is the large central dome, the ceiling of which rises 69 feet above the auditorium floor. Cathedral style is used in the interior, the large and small arches rising in graceful bows to meet each other. The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington and its Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum preserve, chronicle and present the story of the local Jewish community through archival collections, exhibits, educational programs, publications, and the restoration and preservation of the oldest synagogue building in the nation’s capital. The Museum is located in the historic 1876 Adas Israel Synagogue—the oldest in the Washington, DC area. The synagogue is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the DC Inventory of Historic Sites, and the Historic American Buildings Survey. It is an Official Project of the Save America’s Treasures program.

Founded by volunteers in 1960, the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington was incorporated in 1965 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to interpreting Jewish history in the greater Washington area. In 1969, galvanized by the pending demolition of the oldest synagogue building in the nation’s capital, Society members arranged for the historic building to be moved three city blocks to its present location. After extensive restoration, the synagogue was rededicated and opened to the public as the Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum in 1975.
