Owned by the city of Danbury, CT and operated by the Department of Public Utilities, is the City of Danbury Water Pollution Control Plant (DWPCP).

The Public Utilities Division oversees the contract operation of the city’s Water Pollution Control Plant in accordance with the Wastewater Treatment Facility Service Agreement between the City of Danbury and Veolia Water North America. The Public Utilities Division also oversees the contract operation of a public yard waste management processing center, located on Plumtrees Road, in accordance with the agreement between the City of Danbury and Total Landscaping and Tree Service.

The DWPCP has the design capacity to handle 15.5 million gallon per day. The plant is a secondary treatment plant that includes trickling filters. Wastewater is received in the headworks and processed through three primary settling tanks. The discharge from the primary settling tanks is sprayed onto circular stone beds where contact is made with biological growth. The discharge from the trickling filters is processed through intermediate settling tanks and is then passed through aeration tanks and final settling tanks. Liquid Sodium Hypochlorite is injected into the treated sewage flowing through the chlorine contact tank and, when necessary, into the raw sewage at the head of the plant for disinfection purposes. Disinfection is accomplished in the contact tank. Sulfur dioxide is added to remove residual chlorine from the discharging treated wastewater.]]>

Waste Land is a 2010 documentary directed by Lucy Walker. The film documents two years of work of Brazilian contemporary modern artist Vik Muniz in creating art with the cooperation of garbage pickers working at Jardim Gramacho, one of the world's largest landfills, serving the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Together with people employed to pick out recyclable material from garbage, Muniz creates large-scale portraits that are sold at art auctions in London and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo.

The film portrays the lives of the garbage pickers and their working conditions as well as Muniz's efforts to help them to gain recognition and better living conditions.

The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel , also known as the G-Cans Project, is an underground water infrastructure project is Kasukabe, Saitama, Japan built for preventing overflow of the city's major waterways and rivers during rain and typhoon seasons.

Work on the project started in 1992; it consists of five concrete containment silos with heights of 65 m and diameters of 32 m, connected by 6.4 km of tunnels, 50 m beneath the surface, as well as a large water tank with a height of 25.4 m, with a length of 177 m, with a width of 78 m, and with 59 massive pillars connected to a number of 10 MW pumps that can pump up to 200 tons of water into the Edogawa River per second.

The G-Cans project is also a tourist attraction, and can be visited for free; however, as the tours are conducted in Japanese, a Japanese speaker must be present in the group to act as a translator for non-Japanese speakers.

The main water tank resembles a temple and has been used in some movies and TV programs to create mystic scenes. In 2006, a Land Rover television commercial and print campaign was produced using G-Cans as a location.]]>

On October 16, 2003, the Wichita Area Treatment, Education & Remediation (WATER) Center, the treatment center for the Gilbert-Mosley Project, located within the Herman-Hill Park, celebrated its grand opening.

"The Gilbert & Mosley Project is considered to be one of the most innovative public-private partnerships ever created to solve the complex environmental problem of groundwater contamination," . "This project has earned the City of Wichita national recognition for its development to avoid Superfund intervention and the impacts upon public health, environmental risks and the local economy." The State Legislature at the time forward-thinking legislation was passed to make the clean up a reality.

The facility located in Herman-Hill Park houses the equipment, a hydraulic-venturi air stripper treatment system, needed to clean the polluted groundwater, and is designed to encourage public interest and observation on how groundwater is remediated. The other half of the remediation system consists of 5.5 miles of conveyance piping and thirteen extraction wells, which extract and convey the polluted groundwater to the WATER Center treatment facility. The system is operated to limit the spread of and to remove the groundwater contamination.]]>

In the late Nineteenth-Century, before the advent of sewage treatment works, engineer Joseph Bazalgette designed a new sewerage system for London that would transfer the capital's waste into the tidal river Thames for it to flow out to sea.

The new sewers which ran from West to East London, were designed to operate by gravity. However this meant that by the time sewage had reached the East End, it was over 13 metres underground. So, to transfer the millions of gallons of Londoners’ waste back up to the surface, steam-powered pumping stations were built at Crossness and Greenwich south of the river and at Western (Pimlico) and Abbey Mills (Stratford) to the north.]]>

In 1883, the Cincinnati Water Works wanted to extend its efficient water supply main tunnel (which had remained incomplete for several years) 185 feet to the line at Gilbert Avenue. This efficient main started at the reservoir in Eden Park. To control the flow of water at the base of the steep hill, a valve house was needed. Because the Water Works wanted to enhance the landscape of the park, plus they wanted a structure that would also serve as a new entrance to the park, they felt that the valve house needed to have a special design.

That spring, Cincinnati was host to the Shakespearean Dramatic Festival at Music Hall. The highlight of the festival was the performance of "Hamlet" on Friday evening, May 4. A famous actor by the name of James E. Murdock played the role of Hamlet. Even at the age of 72, this actor was very popular in Cincinnati, mainly because Cincinnati was his hometown. Although many in the audience felt that Mr. Murdock was too old to play the role of Hamlet, they were highly impressed with the stage sets, especially the opening scene. This particular stage set was a 65-by-65 foot painting of Elsinore Castle (also known as Kronberg Castle), where the moody Denmark prince walked at night and spoke with the ghost of his father. A local artist named merry painted this stage set. In the audience that night was Water Works Superintendent A.G. Moore. He was so impressed with the painting of Elsinore Castle that that next Monday morning he appeared at the offices of Samuel Hannaford and Sons (famous local architectural firm that designed, among other structures, Music Hall and the City Building) with a newspaper illustration of the Elsinore stage set. What resulted was that Charles B. Hannaford, the son of Samuel, was commissioned to design the valve house in the form of Elsinore Castle. The Elsinore Tower was built later that year for a cost of $15,000.

What resulted is the Norman Romanesque Revival mini-castle consisting of a cylindrical castellated tower joined to a smaller square tower by a battlemented archway. Since the Cincinnati Art Museum officially opened in 1886, steps were placed behind the Elsinore Tower as a short cut to the museum. However, the steps were too steep to ever become popular; and with the ever-increasing prevalence of motorized travel, the Elsinore Tower soon lost its appeal as an entrance to the Park. As of 1988, it was reported that the reservoir valves were housed in a vault underneath the tower and that the Cincinnati Water Works used the Elsinore Tower for equipment storage.]]>

The Washington Aqueduct is the District of Columbia's first public water system. Built by the Army Corps of Engineers from 1853 to 1863, it is a monumental achievement and a tribute to the brilliance of its designer and developer, Montgomery C. Meigs. In 1852 the ever-growing population of Washington, and the memory of two devastating fires, forced the U.S. Congress to acknowledge that the nation's capital required more than the wells and springs that were its current sources of water.

In November of 1853 ground was broken at Great Falls, Maryland for a public water system for Washington. Meig's plan was to divert the water from the Potomac River (12 miles upstream) into a brick conduit. Gravity and pumping stations would direct water through the conduit to retaining reservoirs where it could then be pumped to the city's pipelines.

In the mid-1920's a second conduit was added to increase the capacity of the system, and the intake was enlarged and modernized. The most recent expansion in the 1970's produced the building and observation deck that stand on the original location today. Four "gates" allow water diverted behind the dam to enter the two conduits by gravity flow. A small portion of the original sandstone intake is still visible on the shoreline.

Their plants use incinerators to burn garbage, and use the heat to turn steam turbines, producing electricity. Despite the benevolent idea, the plant brings pollution and air quality concerns. Completed in 1904, the 100-foot diameter steel and cement Crib sits inapproximately 53 feet of water, approximately 3.5 miles from shore and 5 miles from the pumping station. The Crib might have been one of the first offshore wind installations in the country back when people actually lived on the structure to ensure its safe operation. While still supplying water to Cleveland, it currently holds only warning beacons and Coast Guard equipment powered by a modern photovoltaic (PV) array. Designed to withstand the impact by ships, the structure?s robustness combined with its existing height and location make it the ideal candidate to hold a modern wind-monitoring tower; thus saving the massive cost of a new lake foundation.

The Wilson Avenue Crib is off the North Chicago waterfront, about three miles east southeast of Montrose Harbor. In Mike's photo, most of the light tower is hidden behind the brick structure of the crib. It appears that the light has been moved from the lantern room of the old lighthouse to a platform built atop the lantern. Although the crib and tower have a decrepit appearance, this is an active light. It displays a quick-flashing white light at a focal plane of 68 feet above the lake surface.
