The National Opera and Ballet (Bulgarian: Национална опера и балет) is a national cultural institution in Bulgaria that covers opera and ballet. It is based in an imposing building in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

The first opera company in Bulgaria was founded in 1890 as part of the Capital Opera and Drama Company. The two sections split in 1891 to form the Salza i Smyah theatrical company and the Capital Bulgarian Opera. It was, however, disbanded the next year due to lack of government funding and financial difficulties.

The Bulgarian Opera Society was established in 1908 and staged its first test performance. The first full opera was performed in 1909 — Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. The first Bulgarian opera works were also presented in the period, including Siromahkinya by Emanuil Manolov, Kamen i Tsena by Ivan Ivanov and Václav Kaucký, Borislav by Georgi Atanasov and Tahir Begovitsa by Dimitar Hadzhigeorgiev.

The Oslo Opera House (in Norwegian, Operahuset) is the seat of The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the national opera theatre in Norway. The building lies in Bjørvika, in the center of Oslo, at the head of the Oslofjord. Its builder was Statsbygg, a government-run property owner. The architects were the Norwegian firm Snøhetta who were also the architects of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the Library of Alexandria) in Egypt. The theatre designers were Theatre Projects Consultants based in London, the acoustic designers were BrekkeStrandArup, a joint venture between local consultant Brekke Strand Akustikk and international acousticians Arup Acoustics. Norwegian construction company Veidekke was awarded one of the largest building contracts of the project. The structure provides a total area of 38,500 m² and includes 1,100 rooms, one of which has 1,350 seats and another has up to 400 seats. Total expenditures for the building project were planned at 4.4 billion NOK, but finished ahead of schedule, and 300 million NOK under budget.

The Opera House was finished in 2007 with the opening event held on 12 April 2008. King Harald V of Norway opened the Opera House that evening at a gala performance attended by national leaders and royalty, including President Tarja Halonen of Finland, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The main stage is 16 meters wide, and can be made up to 40 meters deep.

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is a West End theatre in Covent Garden, in the City of Westminster, a borough of London. The building faces Catherine Street (earlier named Bridges or Brydges Street) and backs onto Drury Lane. The building standing today is the most recent in a line of four theatres at the same location dating back to 1663, making it the oldest London theatre.[1] For its first two centuries, Drury Lane could "reasonably have claimed to be London's leading theatre" and thus one of the most important theatres in the English-speaking world. Through most of that time, it was one of a small handful of patent theatres that were granted monopoly rights to the production of "legitimate" (meaning spoken plays, rather than opera, dance, concerts, or plays with music) drama in London.

The first theatre on the location was built at the behest of Thomas Killigrew in the early years of the English Restoration. Actors appearing at this "Theatre Royal in Bridges Street" included Nell Gwyn and Charles Hart. It was destroyed by fire in 1672. Killigrew built a larger theatre in the same spot, designed by Christopher Wren; renamed the "Theatre Royal in Drury Lane," it opened in 1674. This building lasted nearly 120 years, under leadership including Colley Cibber, David Garrick, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. In 1791, under Sheridan's management, the building was demolished to make way for a larger theatre which opened in 1794. This enormous new Drury Lane survived just 15 years, burning down in 1809. The building that stands today opened in 1812. It has been home to actors as diverse as Shakespearean Edmund Kean, comedian Dan Leno, comedy troupe Monty Python (who recorded a concert album there), and musical composer and performer Ivor Novello. Today, the theatre is owned by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and generally stages popular musical theatre. It is a Grade I listed building.

The Teatro Olimpico "Olympic Theatre" is a theatre in Vicenza, northern Italy, designed by the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. It is widely considered the first example of covered theatre of the Modern age.
The theatre was commissioned in 1585 by the Vicenza Accademia Olimpica ("Olympic Academy") for the eastern part of the city. Construction began that year, and the building was inaugurated on March 3, 1585, after the completion of the famous scenes by Vincenzo Scamozzi. These are the sole Renaissance structures of that kind to have survived until contemporary times, and the Teatro Olimpico is the oldest surviving Renaissance theater.

The first opera performed there was Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades 9 January 1954; the first ballet was Coppelia, the following night.

The Romanian Athenaeum (Romanian: Ateneul Român) is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest, Romania. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city's main concert hall and the home of the "George Enescu" Philharmonic and the home of an annual international music festival also named after George Enescu.

The Romanian Atheneum Society was founded in 1865 by Constantin Esarcu, V. A. Ureche, and Nicolae Creţulescu. A portion of the construction funds was raised by public subscription in a 28-year long effort, still remembered today by the slogan "Daţi un leu pentru Ateneu!" ("Give one leu for the Ateneu!").

The building was designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, on property that had belonged to the Văcărescu family. The overall style is neoclassical, with some more romantic touches. The ground floor is an ornate conference hall as large as the auditorium above; the auditorium seats 600 in the stalls and another 52 in loge seating. Above the loges is a frieze and a group of 25 frescoes by Costin Petrescu depicting scenes from the history of Romania. In front, there is a statue of Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu.

On December 29, 1919, the Atheneum was the site of the conference of leading Romanians who voted to ratify the unification of Bessarabia, Transylvania, and Bukovina with the Romanian Old Kingdom to constitute Greater Romania.]]>

The building of the Antwerp opera house was commissioned in 1899 by the then burgomaster of Antwerp, Jan Van Rijswijck, on the instigation of the composer Peter Benoit and under pressure from a steadily growing group of Flemish nationalists, who wanted a music theatre of their own that would be a match for the French Opera in what is now the Bourla theatre. The architects were Alexis Van Mechelen and E. Van Averbeke. The opera house was built between 1904 and 1907. When the building was inaugurated in 1907, the entrance hall was not yet finished (the marble on the columns and the walls was still missing, and the ceilings of the foyer and the large hall were still without their obligatory painting), but even in that state, the Neo-Baroque building with its sumptuous decoration in Louis XVI style was an instant success with the public, keen as it was for a grand Flemish playhouse.]]>

The Opera House, built between 1744 and 1748, is one of the few remaining 18th-century theatre buildings in europe. The interior of this theatre with its tiers of boxes, made entirely of wood, was designed by Guiseppe Galli Bibiena from Bologna, the most important theatre architect of his day. Margravine Wilhelmine, a sister of Friedrich der Große (Frederick the Great), was very involved in the theatre, writing plays, composing and acting, and was director of the court opera from 1737.

Set under the classical arcades on the northeastern side, Turin’s new royal theatre presents a contemporary façade of glass and metal. The Gran Teatre del Liceu (or simply Liceu (in Catalan); in Spanish: Liceo) is an opera house on La Rambla in Barcelona. The Liceu opened on April 4, 1847.

In contrast with other European cities, where the monarchy took on the responsibility for the building and upkeep of opera houses, the Liceu was built with private shareholders, organized in a similar way to a trading company or societat. This affected the structure of the building; it lacks, for example, a royal box.

The building was damaged by fire in 1861, but it was quickly rebuilt.

On November 7, 1893, the opening night of the season, during the second act of the opera Guillaume Tell, by Rossini, two bombs were thrown into the stalls of the opera house. Only one of the bombs exploded, but some twenty people were killed, and many more injured.

The attack was said to be the work of an anarchist, and it deeply shocked Barcelona, becaming the symbol of the turbulent social unrest of the time. The Liceu reopened its doors on January 18, 1894, but the seats occupied by those killed by the bombs were not used for a number of years.

Spanish neutrality during World War I allowed the Catalan textile industry to amass enormous wealth through supplying the warring parties. The 1920s were prosperous years. The Liceu became fully established as a leading opera house, and welcomed the orchestra leaders of the time, such as Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.]]>

Opéra comique is a French style of opera that is a partial counterpart to the Italian opera buffa. Unlike opera buffa however, opéra comique generally uses spoken dialogue instead of recitative. Despite its name, it is not necessarily comic or light in nature.

The Opéra-Comique is an opera company and opera house in Paris. It is located Place Boieldieu, in the IIe arrondissement of Paris, near the Paris Stock Exchange and not far from the Opera Garnier, home of the Académie Royale de Musique.

The Opéra-Comique company was established in 1714 to offer French opera as an alternative to Italian opera that then dominated the continent. Productions at the Opéra-Comique distinguished from those at the Académie Royale de Musique by their less formal requirements. French opéra comique, in the 19th century at least, did not have to be comic; the term covered a much wider category of work.]]>

The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheatre in Verona, Italy, which is famous for the opera performances given there. It is one of the best preserved structures of its kind.

The building was built in AD 30 on a site which at the time was outside of the city walls. The ludii (shows and games) staged there were so famous that spectators came from many other (sometimes very distant) places. The amphitheatre could host more than 30,000 spectators.

The round façade was originally in white and pink limestone from Valpolicella, but after a major earthquake in 1117, which almost completely destroyed the outer ring, except the so-called "Ala", the Arena was used as a quarry for other buildings. The first interventions to recover its functionality as a theatre were started during the Renaissance.

Thanks to its outstanding acoustics, the building lends itself to musical performances, the practice of which began in 1913. Nowadays, four productions are mounted each year between June and August.]]>

This is the new Opéra Bastille. Designed by the (then) little-known Canadian architect Carlos Ott and built in 1989, it is the newer and by far the larger of the two main opera houses in Paris. It takes its name from the place de la Bastille, which is the intersection in the foreground, and this intersection in turn was named after the Bastille prison of French revolutionary fame, on which I have more information elsewhere. The older opera house is the classic Opéra Garnier.

This opera house today hosts primarily grand, classic operas, such as Carmen (the world’s most popular opera), Tosca, or Rigoletto. It is a gigantic structure, covering a city block—nearly 30 stories, ten of which are below ground, and 22,000 square metres on each level. There are 45 km of corridors in this building! The opera theater itself (auditorium and stage) occupies only four percent of the building's volume, and seats a bit over 2700 people (large by opera standards, but still not very large in absolute terms). The rest of this cavernous edifice is dedicated to backstage areas, workshops, and all the infrastructure necessary to support world-class grand-opera productions.]]>

The Semper Oper (German: Semperoper) or Saxon State Opera Dresden (Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden) is an opera house in Dresden, Germany, and is one of the most famous in the world. The building is considered to be a prime example of "Dresden-Baroque" architecture. It is situated on the Theater Square in central Dresden on the bank of the Elbe River. On top of the portal there is a Pantherquadriga with a statue of Dionysos. The interior was created by such famous architects of the time as Johannes Schilling. Monuments on the portal depict famous artists such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, William Shakespeare, Sophocles, Molière and Euripides. The building also features work by Ernst Rietschel and Ernst Julius Hähnel.

Interior of the first Semper Oper (opened 1841)It was first built in 1841, by architect Gottfried Semper, in the Early Renaissance style. It had to be rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1869. The citizenry demanded that Gottfried Semper do the reconstruction, even though he was in exile at the time because of his activities in the May Uprising in Dresden in 1849. So the architect had his son Manfred Semper complete the second opera house with his father's plans. This second one was constructed in Neo-Renaissance style in 1878. During construction, performances were held at the Gewerbehausall, which opened in 1870.

In the pre-war years, the building premiered many of the works of Richard Strauss.

During the last weeks of World War II in 1945 the building was destroyed again - this time by Allied bombing and the subsequent fire storms. Exactly 40 years later, on February 13, 1985 the opera was rebuilt almost the same as it was before the war. It reopened with the same opera that was performed last before the destruction in 1945: Weber's Der Freischütz.

During the flood of the Elbe in 2002 the building suffered heavy water damage. With substantial help from around the world, it reopened in December 2002.

Today, most operas are accompanied by the Sächsische Staatskapelle orchestra of Dresden. Performances are nearly always sold out.

The Célestin Theater is one of the oldest theater in France. Only the Comédie Française and the Odeon have been active for a longer time. The Célestins theater was founded in 1792, exclusively dedicated to dramas and popular comedies. Some of the most famous plays by Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas were performed here.

The theater underwent a serious crisis at the end of the 19th century, but it recovered with Moncharmont's direction, who was in charge of the theater for more than three decades. Currently the building is more popular then ever and classical works are performed regularly.]]>

The Lexington Opera House was built in 1886 following the destruction by fire of the earlier opera house. Designed by the noted theatrical architect Oscar Cobb of Chicago, the opera house was opened on August 19, 1887 with a production of "Our Angel" by the Lizzie Evans Stock Company. The three-story building originally seated 1,250 people and had two balconies and two boxes on either side of the stage. The interior of the opera house was lavishly decorated in Turkish morocco and each box was equipped with its own hat rack, cane and umbrella holder, and springs to help people enter their seats. An 1893 article in The Kentucky Leader describes the house as one of the "costliest, handsomest and most convenient Thespian temples in the South, an object of cherished pride in the city." Following the advent of motion pictures the opera house fell into decline. The building was restored during the early 1980s and is now used again for theatrical and musical performances.

Over the years the opera house hosted many large and elaborate performances. A production of the "Henley Regatta" in 1890 required a flooding of the stage. In 1893, approximately 100 animals and a mile-long parade were used for the performance of "A Country Circus." In 1904 a production of "Ben Hur" involved an on-stage chariot race. These plays alone should attest to the popularity of opera and the lavish performances that took place in the building. Vienna Opera House is situated in the frist district of Vienna at the southern end of the Kärntnerstrasse. August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll built the State Opera House from 1861 to 1869.

The Vienna Opera House has a world-wide reputation for its first-class opera performances and is also known because of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. A night at the State Opera is one of the most impressive events any visitor to Vienna can experience.

The building itself closely resembles Italian Renaissance, as this epoch was immensely important for art and music. The first operas were written and performed in Italy during the 16th century.
The loggia towards ring boulevard aims to emphasize the house's openess to the public. It is adorned with a precious cycle representing the Mozart's 'Magic Flute' and other famous operas accomplished by painter Moritz von Schwind.

The Burgtheater also known as 'Burg' or 'Haus am Ring' (House at Ring boulevard) is situated in Vienna's first district. In 1741 Empress Maria Theresia handed over an unused dance-parlour to a theatre-company named Sellier. In 1888, the company moved into a closeby house designed and erected by Gottfried Semper and C. von Hasenauer. Since then, this building was used as theatre house. The beautiful facade, whose white marble has recently been cleaned, is adorned with statues of famous writers like Goethe and Schiller and allegoric figures depicting love and hatred.
Inside, the Burgtheater provides a festive atmosphere for great cultural events.

The Burgtheater has obtained a world-wide reputation for brilliant dramatic art and is one of the first theaters of German-speaking Europe. Over the years, its theatrical company of more or less regular members has worked out a traditional style and speech characteristic of Burgtheater performances ('Burgtheaterstil').

The Besarabsky Market , also frequently called Besarabka (Ukrainian: Бесарабка) is an indoor market located in the center of Kiev at the south-west end of Khreshchatyk, the main and best known street of the city.

The market was built from 1910-1912 to the design of H. Hay.

The Teatro alla Scala was founded, under the auspices of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, to replace the Royal Ducal Theatre, which was destroyed by fire on 26 February 1776 and had until then been the home of opera in Milan.
The cost of building the new theatre was borne by the owners of the boxes at the Ducal, in exchange for possession of the land on which stood the church of Santa Maria alla Scala (hence the name) and for renewed ownership of their boxes.
Designed by the great neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini, La Scala opened on 3 August 1778 with Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta, to a libretto by Mattia Verazi.]]>
