The CN Tower, located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a communications and observation tower standing 553.33 metres (1,815.4 ft) tall. It surpassed the height of the Ostankino Tower while still under construction in 1975, becoming the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world. On September 12, 2007, after holding the record for 31 years, the CN Tower was surpassed in height by the still-under-construction Burj Dubai. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Americas, the signature icon of Toronto's skyline, and a symbol of Canada, attracting more than two million international visitors annually.]]>

A shot tower was a tower designed for the production of shot balls by freefall of molten lead, which was then caught in a water basin. This method is not used anymore and there are not many shot towers left.

Pispala shot tower was built in 1908 by Oy Hjorth Ab and it is 55 metres high, It was in use until 1972. Situated on the Channel Highway is one of the State's most historic buildings, the Shot Tower. The Shot Tower is a 48m (157ft) tall, 10m (32ft) in diameter circular sandstone tower constructed by Joseph Moir in 1870 from locally quarried sandstone blocks. Lead shot was made by dropping molten lead through a sieve at the top of the tower and by the time it hit the water at the bottom it was cold and spherical in shape. Standing 120-feet high, the tower was completed in 1827 for local resident William Beckford to a design by Henry Goodridge. Beckford used the tower as both a library and a retreat, located at the end of pleasure gardens called Beckford's Ride which ran from his house in Lansdown Crescent up to the Tower at the top of Lansdown Hill.

Today, the tower is home to a museum collection displaying furniture originally made for the Tower, alongside paintings, prints and objects illustrating William Beckford’s life as a writer, collector and patron of the arts. Visitors can follow in Beckford’s footsteps and climb the spiral staircase to the beautifully restored Belvedere and experience the spectacular panoramic view of Bath.

It is 275 feet tall and took four years to erect, 1871-1875. The tower was first designed by architect Booth. Edward Wainhouse (1817-1883) owned the Washer Lane Dye Works. The Abatement Act of 1870 required the building of a tall chimney, to carry smoke out of the valleys in which factories were built. In 1874 John Wainhouse sold the mill to his works manager. However he refused to pay for the cost of building the chimney so Wainhouse decided to keep the tower for himself and use it as an observatory. The upper section of the tower was completed by another local architect, Richard Swarbrick Dugale, who designed the elaborate galleries at the top of the tower. The total costs of the tower came to £14,000.

The belfry of Bruges, or Belfort, is a medieval bell tower in the historical center of Bruges, Belgium. One of the city's most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives, and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other danger. A narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, accessible by the public for an entry fee, leads to the top of the 83-meter-high building, which leans about a meter to the east.

To the sides and back of the tower stands the former market hall, a rectangular building only 44 m broad but 84 m deep, with an inner courtyard. The belfry, accordingly, is also known as the Halletoren (tower of the halls).

A group of interested historians from many walks of life including members of Packard Clubs, the Classic Car Club, and the Antique Automobile Club joined together with the elected officials of Shelby Township and citizens to save a significant portion of the Proving Grounds. The Packard Motor Car Foundation offered to open negotiations with Ford. Extensive negotiations and re-negotiations led to Fords offer to gift the seven acres of land containing the grand entrance gates, the Lodge building, the Garage building, the elevated water storage tank, and the Chrysler Defense building to the Foundation for restoration and perpetual care. An additional seven acres has been set aside for later acquisition that currently contains the timing tower, a 458-foot section of the test track, and the relocated Lindbergh hangar.

A tower on this spot of the hill was first mentioned in the 13th century. When the fortress was reconstructed in the middle of the 16th century, the tower was given its present shape. The hands on the huge clockfaces often confuse people. Is the clock out of order? No. The fact that originally there were only long hands for the hours which could be seen from the distance, and that those for the minutes were added only later caused the "swapping" of the hands. The clockworks, made by Michael Sylvester Funck in 1712, are still working but have been driven electronically since the middle of the 20th century.]]>

Balfron Tower is a 27-storey housing block in the Poplar district of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London, United Kingdom. It forms part of the Brownfield social housing estate close to the northern approaches to the Blackwall Tunnel under the river Thames.
Balfron Tower is 84 metres high and contains 146 flats. Lifts serve all entry floors (that is every third floor); thus, to reach a flat on the 11th, 12th or 13th floors, residents or visitors would take a lift to the 12th. The lift shaft sits in a separate service tower, joined to the residential tower by the seven walkways visible in the picture.

The building was originally constructed as a power station for the Post Office, built towards the end of the 19th century. It was subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes, for conversion into a cold store.

The building was largely rebuilt to an Art Deco design by company architect Albert Moore between 1928 and 1929. Much of the original power station was demolished, but the river facing facade was retained and extended. Liebig wanted to include a tower featuring illuminated signs advertising the name of their product. When permission for the advertisements was refused the tower was built with four sets of three vertically-aligned windows, each of which "coincidentally" happened to be in the shapes of a circle, a cross and a circle. Liebig and the building were eventually purchased by the Vestey Group.

In the late 1970s and into the 1980s there were several proposals to demolish the building and develop it and the adjacent Coin Street site, but these were met with strong local opposition and two planning inquiries were held. Although permission for redevelopment was granted, the support of the Greater London Council finally resulted in the tower and adjoining land being sold to the GLC in 1984 for 2.7 million pounds — who sold the entire 13-acre (53,000 m²) site to the not-for-profit Coin Street Community Builders for just £750,000.

In the 1990s the tower was refurbished to a design by Liftschutz Davidson to include housing, a restaurant, shops and exhibition space. The tower won the Royal Fine Art Commission / BSkyB Building of the Year Award for Urban Regeneration in 1997.

The St. Cristopher Tower called Porta Manna (big door) and the remains of the ancient walls of the city of Oristano were in fact one of the entrances to the city. Today, the tower is located in piazza Roma and was erected in 1291 together with the wall upon the will of Mariano II – judge of the Giudicato of Arborea.
The imposing work was made necessary due to the continuous invasions and pillages that the city was subject to since the beginning of the XIII century. The structure foresaw the cinta muraria (approximately 2.7 hectares) equipped with about thirty towers along the entire perimeter of the city and interrupted only in the two points of access by: Porta Ponti (bridges door - called in this manner because it led to the bridge over the Tirso river) and Porta Mari (Sea door - that took its name from the road that led towards the sea), which were protected by two imposing towers - that of St. Christopher and that of St. Philip.
The monument is on three floors. The first allowed access to the walls, the second housed the capstans that had the function of lifting the great portcullis portal, the third – on which a second body was built – gave access to a terrace protected by Guelphic battlements that, together with the loopholes located on the walls of the two previous floors, played a fundamental defensive role.
Within the walls were built churches such as those of St. Clara (1343), the cathedral (XII century), St. Francis (XIII century), monasteries and civil buildings.]]>

The Gauss Tower is a reinforced concrete observation tower on the summit of the High Hagens in Dransfeld, Germany. The tower can be reached directly by car. A restaurant with a panoramic view is located inside the tower.

The tower is named for Carl Friedrich Gauss, who made the large triangle from the Hohen Hagen break into Inselsberg a basis of his survey of Hanover.

Panoraama Linnanmäki is a 53 meter tall gyrotower at Linnanmäki amusement park in Helsinki. Panoraama Linnanmäki was built in 1987 by Intamin AG and offers capacity for 400 tourists per hour. Its previous name was Panorama, but the name was changed to Panoraama (additional letter "a") when Linnanmäki changed the naming policy for its rides and started to use only words that are correct Finnish language.

Originally Linnanmäki was planning a real observation tower, like Näsinneula at Särkänniemi park, but first there were problems with legal issues and later with funding. Eventually Linnanmäki chose to build a tower in a form of gyrotower ride.

Panoraama is one of the best places to view the City of Helsinki, as the tower is located very near the center of the city.

The Vasco da Gama Tower is a 145 m/476 ft-high lattice tower in Lisbon, Portugal, built over the Tagus river. It is named after Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who was the first European to arrive in India by sail, in 1498.

The architecture of the tower was by Leonor Janeiro, Nick Jacobs and SOM. The steel structure, representing the sail of a caravel, was assembled by engineering company Martifer.

The tower was built in 1998 for the Expo 98 World's Fair. At the 120 m/394 ft-level, there was an observation deck and, just below it, a luxury panoramic restaurant. At the base of the tower was a three-storey building that served as the European Union Pavilion during the expo.

Both the observation deck and the restaurant were closed in October 2004. While they were open, the tower was the tallest structure in Portugal open to the public (excluding bridges).

The base building was to be leased for office space after the closing of the expo, but never found tenants. Instead, it was used for one-off events, like the world premiere of the new MINI car in 2001. In 2006 the tower was climbed by Alain Robert, a solo urban climber. He was sponsored by Optimus, a Portuguese mobile phone company, that used the climb as part of a marketing campaign for a recently released product.

The Wills Memorial Building also known as the Wills Memorial Tower or simply the Wills Tower is a Gothic building situated near the top of Park Street on Queens Road in Bristol, United Kingdom. It is considered one of the last great gothic buildings to be built in England. and is a landmark building of the University of Bristol which currently houses the Faculty of Law and the Department of Earth Sciences, as well as the Law Library.

Many regard the building as synonymous with the University of Bristol and refer to it simply as 'The University'. It is the centerpiece building of the university precinct and used by the University of Bristol for degree ceremonies which take place inside of the Great Hall

The Observatory (grid reference ST564733) is a former mill, now used as an observatory, located on Clifton Down, close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, England. At 337 feet (92 metres) above the gorge, the cliff top is likely to have been used as a lookout post since at least the Iron Age.

The building was erected with the permission of the Society of Merchant Venturers, as a windmill for corn in 1766 and later converted to the grinding of snuff, when it became known as the 'The Snuff Mill'. This was damaged by a fire on October 30th 1777, when the sails were left turning during a gale and caused the equipment to catch light. It was then derelict for 52 years until in 1828 William West, an artist, rented the old mill, for 5 shillings (25p) a year, as a studio.

In 1977, the Merchant Venturers sold the observatory to Honorbrook Inns, however they were obliged to maintain public access to the camera obscura whose ownership was retained by the Merchant Venturers.

It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building and is currently on the Buildings at Risk Register

The tower was originally planned as the TV tower for Berlin. It was to have a total height of 425 feet (130 meters) with an observation platform at 230 feet (70 meters).

Desert View Watchtower is a 70 foot high stone building located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon within Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, United States. The 4 story structure, completed in 1932, was designed by American architect Mary Colter, an employee of Fred Harvey who also created and designed many other buildings in the Grand Canyon vicinity including Hermit's Rest and the Lookout Studio.

The bottom floor of the tower now contains a gift shop while the upper floors serve as an observation deck from which visitors to the national park can view eastern portions of the Grand Canyon. Desert View Watchtower was designated a United States National Historic Landmark on May 28, 1987.]]>

The Eastern Gate (Oostpoort) in Delft was built around 1400. Around 1510 the towers were enhanced with an additional octagonal floor and high spires. This is the only city gate remaining in Delft, the others were demolished in the nineteenth century. It currently serves as an art gallery and private residence.

The tower is 30m high and its top is 463m above sea level, which is about 180m above the city center below.

Chester Shot Tower is a grade-II*-listed shot tower located Chester, England. The tower stands beside the Shropshire Union Canal and forms part of the disused Chester Leadworks. Zendstation Smilde is a tall, free-standing structure, similar to the Gerbrandy Tower and was built for directional radio services and TV and FM-transmissions in 1959 in the Netherlands. Its base is an 80 metre high reinforced concrete tower, on which a guyed mast is mounted. At construction the height of the tower of Zendstation Smilde was 270 metres with this mast. A section was added later so its total height is now 303.5 m (996 ft).
