Within the municipality of Capdepera, next to the main road that leads to the coastal village Canyamel, we can find the Canyamel Tower, one of the most outstanding defence towers on Mallorca for its age and state of conservation. It is believed that it is of Arab origin although its development is linked to the era of the conquest of Mallorca by King James I (XIII century). The tower was built to control the coastline and served as a refuge and defence of the inhabitants of the fertile valley of Canyamel, against the frequent attacks by pirates and invaders.
In its 700 years history, the fortified house has experienced numerous alterations, and once the danger of invaders disappeared, it was transformed into a property dedicated to farming. When the cultivation of sugarcane was introduced, in the second half of the XV century, the defence tower changed its original name of Montsó Tower for its present one, Canyamel Tower. Directed by architect Josep Ferragut, the Morell family (owners of the tower) has rehabilitated the fortified house over the past decades with a view to recovering its historical aspect.
The tower, that has three floors plus a central turret with a total 23 metres, is an excellent lookout point over the Bay of Canyamel and a great part of the municipalities of Capdepera, Artà and Son Servera.
At present the inside of the Canyamel Tower can be visited from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., for 3 euros. Also, sporadically concerts are held there and in one of the old buildings that surround the tower there is the Restaurante Sa Porxada (Tel 971841310) offering typical Mallorcan dishes such as Sopes Mallorquines and Suckling Pig in a popular and rustic atmosphere.]]>

"The Maguire Memorial Carillon of First Presbyterian Church, Stamford, Connecticut is a 56-bell instrument consisting of 22 bells cast by Gillett and Johnston from the original Nestle Carillon of 36 bells installed in 1948, and 34 bells cast by Paccard in 1967. (A detailed history of this instrument is given in the 1982 BULLETIN of the GCNA.) The bourdon weighs 6,830 lbs. and sounds the note B2. It is connected at the console to B flat 2. Except for the first B2 and C#3 (console), the instrument is chromatic to g7, almost five octaves higher. The largest 11 bells are housed in the lower bell chamber; three of these, forming a major triad based upon the bourdon, are arranged in full swinging mountings. The 45 smaller bells are housed in the upper bell chamber. The console, located in a teakwood cabin between the bell chambers is of "Bigelow Standard" design. In addition to the mechanical carillon action, the 20 largest bells are playable electrically from the organ; an automatic clock-controlled mechanism plays the Cambridge Quarters on bells 6, 11, 13, and 15, with the hour struck on the bourdon. Although the beauty and clarity of the tone of this instrument had been acclaimed from the outset by all, many, including the resident carillonneur, had felt that the action was uneven and rather heavy, particularly in the pedals, with consequent difficulty in controlling the instrument. Accordingly, over a period of two years, a number of carillon consultants were called in to examine the carillon, and to submit proposals for its improvement. The I.T. Verdin Co. of Cincinnati was selected to perform the needed work, some of which was necessitated by 13 years of moderate to heavy usage, but of which the balance stemmed from problems in the original installation, which Dr. Bigelow did not live to see completed. Starting from the top, literally, isolation material and provision for expansion and contraction of the supporting beams were placed on the smallest 27 bells, effectively eliminating the "knocking" sound caused by the former rigid clamping to the supporting beams. All recalling springs were replaced, and counter springs were applied to the lower medium and bass bells. All clappers were removed, cleaned, painted, and replaced with renewed lubrication, and all headbolts drawn, inspected, and painted before reinstallation. New newprene isolation material was also installed for bells 12-29, and all transmission bars were removed, and the bearings cleaned and lubricated. A new umbrella system eliminated leakage and the former friction at that point. At the console, new heavier-pattern adjusters were installed above the music rack, eliminating the necessity of removing the rack when adjusting; all keys and pedals were side bushed with bushing cloth, and all console wood and metal parts were completely refinished. Rear pivot points of the keys were honed and bushed with Teflon, and the first eleven keys, which are extended to the rear for downward connections to the lower bell-chamber, were reinforced, to prevent the former flexing under pressure. A new music rack, long enough to accommodate seven pages, was installed. New pedal springs were installed as well. Throughout the instrument great care was used in lining up and plumbing elements of the action; this resulted in the movement of both the console, and many of the transmission bar arms, in order to obtain the correct pull lines. In the lower bell chamber, new hammers were placed on the smaller of the two swinging bells, and rigid aluminum tubing with stainless terminations and clavier connections replaced wires on the six largest bells; the mechanism of these was considerably simplified: the action on any bell does not change direction more than twice; formerly, the action of bell #3 involved five changes of direction, and some bells had three transmission bars. Finally, in addition to much needed work on mountings, bearings, woodwork, clappers, and other refurbishing and corrections, the electrical mechanism which involves individual motors operating extra internal clappers, was cleaned, lubricated, and re-regulated throughout. The carillon was first played publicly after renovation by George Matthew, Jr., and Rick Watson on the Sunday before Christmas, 1981. It now provides the sensitivity and achieves the brilliance and grandeur that Dr. Bigelow had envisioned in this, his last and finest instrument. The mixture of open surface and enclosure of the two bells chambers, the happy combination of the English and French bells, and the wide range produce a sound with both clarity and depth, on which music of all periods may be effectively played, and which blends well with instruments on special occasions. The instrument carries up to 1-1/2 miles on quiet days with favorable wind, but is not overpowering in the churchyard and nearby streets."]]>

The Kutafya Tower (Russian: Кутафья башня) is an outlying barbican tower of the Moscow Kremlin. It was built in the early 16th century to protect the bridge over the Neglinnaya River leading to the Troitskaya Tower. The Kutafya Tower had two combat tiers (the divider between them was destroyed in 1780); the upper landing was equipped with gun-slots for plunging fire at the enemy at the foot of the tower. A delicate ornamental crown in the Muscovite baroque style was built in 1685. Initially, the tower was surrounded by a moat with lift bridges thrown over it, which led to the side gates. A through-passage to the Manezhnaya Street was constructed in 1867. At the same time, they built the arched apertures on the sides and a guard house on the south side, which would be dismantled during the restoration in 1974-1977. The Troitskaya Tower (Russian: Троицкая башня, literally Trinity Tower) is a tower with a through-passage in the center of the northwestern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, which overlooks the Alexander Garden.

The Troitskaya Tower was built in 1495-1499 by an Italian architect Aloisio da Milano (known in Russia as Aleviz Fryazin Milanets). The tower has born several names, including Rizopolozhenskaya, Znamenskaya, and Karetnaya. It received its current name in 1658 from the Troitskaya Coaching Inn (Троицкое подворье) in the Kremlin. The two-story basement of the tower housed a prison in the 16th-17th centuries. There is the Troitsky Bridge, which is protected by the Kutafia Tower and leads to the gates of the Troitskaya Tower. There was also a clock on top of the tower between 1585 and 1812. In 1707, due to a threat of Swedish invasion, the gun slots of the Troitskaya Tower were enlarged to fit heavy cannons. In 1935, the Soviets installed a red star on top of the Troitskaya Tower. Prior to Soviet rule the tower had an icon of the Holy Trinity atop its outward face. Because this tower was the formal entrance for huge Communist Party Congresses the icon was totally removed rather than just plastered over as were those on the Spasskaya and Nikolskaya Towers.

The Troitskaya Tower is the tallest tower of the Moscow Kremlin. Its current height on the side of the Alexander Garden together with the star is 80 m. Today, the gate of the tower is the main visitors' entrance into the Kremlin.]]>

The Nikolskaya Tower was built in 1491 by an Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari. It was named after Nikolaevsky (Nikolsky) Greek Monastery, which is no longer there. In 1806, the tower was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by an architect Luigi Rusca. In 1812, the top of the tower was blown up by the retreating French army. It was restored in 1816 by an architect Osip Bove. The Nikolskaya Tower was once again severely damaged by the artillery fire in October 1917 and was later restored by an architect Nikolai Markovnikov. In 1935, the Soviets installed a red star on top of the tower. Its current height with the star is 70.4 m. The original icon of St. Nicholas, the bishop of Mirna, placed above the entrance on Red Square had been plastered over by Soviet authorities and was uncovered and restored in 2010 - similar to what took place on the Spasskaya Tower.

The Nabatnaya Tower (Russian: Набатная башня) is a tower in the southeastern section of the Kremlin wall, built in 1495. It is 38 m in height. Traditionally, there has always been a bell on top of the Nabatnaya Tower, used for notifying citizens of fires and other misfortunes in the Kremlin or on the Red Square (hence, the name Nabatnaya, which derives from the old Russian word набат - nabat, meaning "alarm" or "tocsin"). In 1680, a bellmaker Feodor Dmitriev cast the so-called Nabatny bell (alarm bell) weighing 150 poods (2.45 metric tons) and installed it on the tower. The bell subsequently broke and was re-cast by Ivan Motorin on July 30, 1714. The sound from this bell served as a signal for the spontaneous uprising of the Muscovites during the plague outbreak in 1771, which would later be called the Plague Riot (Чумной бунт). By the order of Catherine the Great, the tongue of the bell was removed after this incident. The tongueless bell remained on top of the tower for 30 more years. In the early 19th century, it was removed and transferred to the Arsenal. In 1821, the bell was moved to the Armoury, where it remains to this day in the vestibule.]]>

The Blagoveschenskaya Tower (Russian: Благовещенская башня), known in English as the Annunciation Tower, was erected in 1487-1488. At its foundation are slabs of white limestone that have survived since the time of the white stone Kremlin of the 14th century. During the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the tower was used as a prison. The name of the tower comes from the miracle-working Icon of the Annunciation, which was once kept here, and is also associated with the Church of the Annunciation added to the tower in the early 18th century and demolished in 1932. In the 17th century, the Portomoyniye Gates were built nearby so that palace laundresses could go to the Portomoiny raft on the Moscow River to rinse porty, or underclothes. These gates were bricked up in 1813.

It is named after Borovitsky Hill, one of the seven hills Moscow is standing on. The four storey Hazelslack Tower is a few yards off the B5282 near the village of Storth, West of Beetham and South of Kendal. The tower that survives is today interpreted as a pele tower. The only reminders of the former hall block are the marks of the eaves on the walls of the tower. A huge fireplace can still be seen where the hall joined the tower. The tower was most probably built during the late 14th century, and was certainly in ruin by the 17th century. The many windows mostly remain in situ, with their sandstone surrounds mostly intact. The tower was reputedly built by Lucy, Margaret and Katherine de Throeng. Together with their brother, Thomas de Throeng, they owned one quarter of the Barony of Kendal. The tower was built in conjunction with a tower at Dallam, now demolished and replaced with the great hall, and also Arnside Tower.

Its design is very similar to other towers nearby, the ruined Arnside Tower and Wraysholme Tower. It may also be that the tower at Hazelslack was incomplete. Maybe the threat of Scottish raids had subsided by the time the building was underway. The tower is easily visible from the road, and forms an integral part of the Limestone Link walk from Arnside to Kirkby Lonsdale, passing through some great limestone countryside.
