The Dubailand project was officially announced on October 23, 2003. Dubailand will be built on a 3 billion square foot (278 km²/107 mile²) site and will include 45 mega projects and 200 sub projects.[2] It will be twice the size of Walt Disney World, currently the largest collection of amusement parks in the world. Private reaction towards the project has been positive and Dubai has exceeded the $4.9 billion private investment figure it expected on the entire project by collecting approximately $6 billion from the private sector for the first phase alone.

The first of four phases comprising the development of Dubailand will be completed in early 2008 since the developers decided to extend the park by 50% subsequently bumping up its completion date. Completion of the final phase is targeted for some time between 2015 and 2018. Dubailand is seen by its designers as a city and therefore like a city they expect it to continue to grow and develop beyond the four phase plan.

Moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, 77, strode out onto the $40 million Skywalk, built by a private developer with the permission of the Hualapai tribe, whose ancestral lands abut the remote southwest rim of the Arizona canyon.



The project has stirred controversy on the Hualapai Reservation, where backers say it will create valuable jobs but opponents condemn it as a desecration of a sacred landscape.



"I felt wonderful, not exactly floating on air ... but a vision of hope for the future," said Aldrin, who was the second man to walk on the moon.



Waving to a crowd of about 1,000 tourists, dignitaries and tribal members, Aldrin walked around the transparent pathway to meet a group of Hualapai elders and children coming from the other direction.



The astronaut's few steps marked the official inauguration of the project, which backers hope will draw up to half-a-million paying visitors this year to the site some 120 miles east of Las Vegas.



The horseshoe-shaped steel pathway, which is paved with 90 tonnes of toughened glass, is cantilevered 70 feet out over the lip to give steel-nerved visitors a view of the Colorado River Valley below.

Two oil companies have signed on to Mohamed Al Fayed's plans to open a hotel on an oil rig off the east coast of Scotland.

The Harrods owner wants to create a 50-bedroom country-house style hotel on a platform in the Cromarty Firth (...) by 2008. If approved, the attraction would also boast a visitor centre, a shop and a restaurant. Two unidentified oil companies have approved the use of their platforms.

Cromarty Firth is located in north-eastern Scotland and is one of the major firths on the east shore of the Moray Firth. It contains a range of high-quality coastal habitats including extensive intertidal mud-flats and shingle bordered locally by areas of saltmarsh, as well as reedbeds around Dingwall. The rich invertebrate fauna of the intertidal flats, with beds of eelgrass Zostera spp., glasswort Salicornia spp., and Enteromorpha algae, all provide important food sources for large numbers of wintering and migrating waterbirds (swans, geese, ducks and waders). With adjacent estuarine areas elsewhere in the Moray Firth, it is the most northerly major wintering area for wildfowl and waders in Europe. One hundred eighty four lives were lost in a single moment at the Pentagon – one hundred eighty four individuals forever linked through the horrific events that unfolded on September 11, 2001 .

This proposal envisions a memorial that simultaneously affords intimate and collective contemplation through silence within a tactile field of sensuous experience. It sets out to permanently record and express the sheer magnitude of loss through an architectural experience of a place radically different than what we encounter in our daily lives. In this light, the space itself serves as the memorial at all scales of experience and engagement – from within, driving by and from above.

A MEMORIAL PARK is inscribed with 184 MEMORIAL UNITS. Each unit is dedicated to an individual victim – its placement and place within the collective field a unique instance. This highly specific and qualitatively objective organizational strategy yields seemingly random results. The field is organized as a timeline of the victims’ ages, spanning from Dana Falkenberg, 3 years old, to John D. Yamnicky, age 71. While each memorial unit locates itself on its respective age line, the units are then organized by birth date along the age line. Inherent tendencies – the clustering of certain age groups, the gap between the children and adults – are clearly evident and meaningful, though infinitely interpretive.

Personal interpretation is further sparked by embedding layers of specificity into the orientation of each memorial unit within the expansive site. Fifty-nine memorial units face one direction, 125 face the other – thus distinguishing victims on board American Airlines Flight 77 from those who were inside the Pentagon. When visiting a memorial dedicated to a victim who was in the Pentagon, the visitor will see their engraved name and the Pentagon in the same view. Conversely, one would see the engraved name of a victim on Flight 77 with the sky. Though highly specific, this distinction is quite subtle when deployed consistently throughout the site. It adds a level of difference to the visual and spatial field, thus provoking visitors’ curiosity, while simultaneously telling the story of those involved in the events that took place here that day.

The western edge of the site is defined with the AGE WALL – a wall that “grows” in height one inch per year relative to the age lines that organize the site at large. As one moves deeper into the site the wall gets higher – it grows from 3 inches above the perimeter bench (at Dana’s memorial age-line) to 71 inches above the bench (at John’s). Strategically, this wall grows as a barrier is needed between the memorial park and the delivery lane that encroaches upon the site at its northwestern edge. Experientially, this wall communicates the organizational strategy to the drivers passing by on the freeway, while still allowing them to peer into the site from afar. From within the site it provides a shadowy backdrop for the lacy ornamental grasses that are planted along its base.

A vivid canopy of color and light provides shade throughout the site, as trees are clustered in conjunction with the disbursement of memorial units. Several Maple species, especially the Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum) serve this scheme well. The Paperbark is one of the last Maples to drop their leaves, retaining their beautiful fall foliage well into the winter months - this suspension of time will contribute to the sublime beauty of the Park. Upon maturity, the cinnamon-colored bark begins to exfoliate, exhibiting exquisite texture and color and overall year-round interest.
