This is the BärenPark Bern that reopens bigger in Oktober 2009.

On November 21, 2009 a 25 year old mentally handicapped man was left seriously wounded after climbing into a bear enclosure in the BärenPark.
The unnamed man was attacked by four-year-old bear Finn, who caused severe injuries to the his head and one of his legs, before a policeman shot the bear, injuring it and forcing it to retreat into a cave.

A multiple train collision south of Rotterdam has caused chaos on the rail network and roads in the area. Goods traffic from and to Rotterdam harbour will be affected over the next five days.

Two goods trains were involved in a head-on collision below a viaduct on the A15 motorway, killing the driver of one train. Derailed sections landed on a parallel track, where a passenger train was approaching. Its driver spotted the accident just in time to slow down and minimize the impact. On the passenger train a couple of passengers were slightly injured. The viaduct was damaged by goods wagons piling up under it.

The area was quickly evacuated after the pile-up, because it was feared the goods trains transported inflammable liquids. This later turned out not to be the case. The A15 motorway remained closed until the morning rush hour; goods traffic by rail south of Rotterdam remains suspended while the wreckage is cleared, which will take at least five days. This will affect cargo transports at Rotterdam Harbour, goods train operating company DB Schenker has said. Passenger services have been resumed.

The National Safety Investigation Council is making an inventory of the situation in order to establish the cause of the accident. The mayor of the town of Barendrecht, on whose territory the crash happened, said it confirmed that his town is in a danger zone. The area is crisscrossed by regular and highspeed rail lines and motorways, and is home to a significant part of the Netherlands' petrochemical industry.

ZEPHYRHILLS -- Police officials were investigating a fatal skydiving accident Sunday at Skydive City, a large training facility that hosts tens of thousands of jumps every year near the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport.

Investigators did not release details late Sunday, saying only it was an ongoing investigation.

The accident was reported by a 911 call at 5:02 p.m. at 4241 Skydive Lane, according to emergency dispatchers. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.]]>

Estimates say it will cost about $3 million to $3.5 million to buy out the town, which is surrounded by huge piles of mining waste called 'chat' and dotted with uncapped shafts and cave-ins filled with brackish, polluted water. 'It's been a long, dusty, chat-covered road, but for the citizens of Treece, finally, help will be on the way,' said Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas who has been pushing for a buyout of Treece for two years. The population of Treece has dwindled to about 100 people, almost all of whom want to move but say they can't because the pollution and an ongoing EPA cleanup project makes it impossible to sell a house. In February, the AP claimed that Fairey violated copyright laws when he used one of their images as the basis for the poster. In response, the artist filed a lawsuit against the AP, claiming that he was protected under fair use. Fairey also claimed that he used a different photo as the inspiration for his poster.

After Fairey's admission, a spokesman for the Associated Press issued a statement saying that Fairey "sued the AP under false pretenses by lying about which AP photograph he used."

Fairey said that his lawyers have taken the steps to amend his court pleadings to reflect the fact that "the AP is correct about which photo I used as a reference and that I was mistaken."

The artist expressed his remorse in his statement, saying that he is taking "full responsibility for my actions which were mine alone. I am taking every step to correct the information and I regret I did not come forward sooner."

Both are tunnel facilities located within military compounds approximately 30-40 kilometers away from Qom.

Five young female actresses and a male photographer were arrested for disorderly conduct after police received numerous 911 calls of women hanging over a freeway overpass and flashing northbound motorists on Interstate highway 75.

Twelve miners have been killed in a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Ruda Slaska-Kochlowice, southern Poland, officials say.

The blast struck the Wujek-Slask mine on Friday morning, a spokeswoman for Poland's mines authority, Edyta Tomaszewska, told reporters.

She said 30 miners were taken to hospital. The blast occurred 1,050m (nearly 3,500ft) underground.

The miners were working more than a kilometre underground at the time.

Bernard L. Madoff's massive fraud stunned some of the wealthy denizens of Malibu Colony, especially when a couple devastated by the scheme surrendered their oceanfront home to Wells Fargo Bank.

But some neighbors say the real shocker came when they saw one of the bank's top executives spending weekends in the $12-million beach house and hosting eye-catching parties there. What's more, Wells Fargo spurned offers to show the property to prospective buyers, a real estate agent said.

"It's outrageous to take over a property like that, not make it available and then put someone from the bank in it," said Phillip Roman, an 18-year Colony resident who lives a few homes away from the property.

Residents identified the house's occupant as Cheronda Guyton, a Wells Fargo senior vice president who is responsible for foreclosed commercial properties.

Having nine lives is one thing - but Smoka the cat may have used 26 of them to emerge unscathed after that many days in the rubble of an Aug. 10 fire.

The 1-year-old cat was stuck in an apartment above Fitzgerald's Flowers and Gifts at 410 S. Main St. in Franklin when the building burned.

Sandy LaPierre, Smoka's owner who lived in a second-floor apartment, said she assumed the cat died from the smoke and water.

The back side of a holdup note has landed a man wanted in a robbery in jail.

On Aug. 12, Todd Waller Markham allegedly walked into Washington Federal Savings at 181 E. 6100 South and gave the teller a note demanding cash. He was given the money and he left the bank, according to charging documents filed in United States District Court for Utah.

However, the reverse side of the note Markham allegedly gave the teller was a form detailing the results of a drug screening for Markham. The form identified Markham by name, Social Security number and birth date. Police were able to cross-reference the photo on Markham's driver's license against surveillance video and waited at his apartment.]]>

A fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed the astronauts this striking view of Sarychev volcano (Russia’s Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in an early stage of eruption on June 12, 2009. Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Island chain and is located on the northwestern end of Matua Island.

Prior to June 12, the last explosive eruption had occurred in 1989 with eruptions in 1986, 1976, 1954 and 1946 also producing lava flows. Commercial airline flights were diverted from the region to minimize the danger of engine failures from ash intake. This detailed photograph is exciting to volcanologists because it captures several phenomena that occur during the earliest stages of an explosive volcanic eruption.

The main column is one of a series of plumes that rose above Matua Island (48.1 degrees north latitude and 153.2 degrees east longitude) on June 12. The plume appears to be a combination of brown ash and white steam. The vigorously rising plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance; the surrounding atmosphere has been shoved up by the shock wave of the eruption. The smooth white cloud on top may be water condensation that resulted from rapid rising and cooling of the air mass above the ash column, and is probably a transient feature (the eruption plume is starting to punch through). The structure also indicates that little to no shearing winds were present at the time to disrupt the plume. By contrast, a cloud of denser, gray ash -- most probably a pyroclastic flow -- appears to be hugging the ground, descending from the volcano summit. The rising eruption plume casts a shadow to the northwest of the island (bottom center). Brown ash at a lower altitude of the atmosphere spreads out above the ground at upper right. Low-level stratus clouds approach Matua Island from the east, wrapping around the lower slopes of the volcano. Only about 1.5 kilometers of the coastline of Matua Island (upper center) can be seen beneath the clouds and ash.

Kenny Tessel, the owner of KT's Barbecue, bought 'Bar-Be-Q', a curvaceous scantily clad mannequin, hoping to bring in customers. Business did indeed increase. Only problem...local officials said the mannequin violated zoning rules. At a zoning hearing, it was decided that 'Bar-Be' could stay, but had to dress more modestly. Tessel says he will appeal the ruling.

This location is listed by Wikipedia as the correct town.

Kayaker takes plunge over 180-foot Palouse Falls

It took Tyler Bradt four trips to Palouse Falls before he did it. He first laid eyes on the Southeastern Washington waterfall in March while on a trip from his home state of Montana.

"We just heard about it by word of mouth," Bradt said. "People just said, 'You should check out this waterfall in Eastern Washington.' "

His first impression? "It looks pretty runnable."

So, last Tuesday, he went over Palouse Falls, all 180-plus feet of it. In a kayak.
