This 267 acre manmade lake was created in 1927 as part of the creation of the Wisconsin Dells resort area following the Great Depression. The lake features resorts and luxury homes along it's shores. It was also home to the Tommy Bartlett's water skiing show and offered scenic boat and amphibious Duck tours.

Several days of heavy rain in 2008 led to the lake washing out a section of land along the north shore, creating a new channel that caused the lake to drain into the nearby Wisconsin River. Television cameras captured dramatic scenes of homes being torn from their foundations and being carried down the river.

Plans are underway to repair the washed out shoreline with hopes that the lake will be refilled before the 2009 tourism season begins. Volunteers have taken advantage of the situation by removing trash from the lakebed.]]> 2008-06-09 - Lake Delton empties

Instead of using wind forced through pipes, each of the organ’s keys are connected by a multitude of tubes, pipes and wires to every conceivable facet of the building. French explorer and adventurer Xavier Rosset is about to embark on a 300 day trip to live alone on a remote tropical island in the South Pacific. His adventures will be filmed and used for a 52 minute documentary.

Tofua Caldera, in Tonga, is the summit caldera of a steep-sided composite cone that forms Tofua Island. Pre-caldera activity is recorded by a sequence of pyroclastic deposits and lavas constituting the older cone, followed on the northern part of the island by froth lavas or welded and unwelded ignimbrite. Following caldera collapse, lavas were erupted from the northern part of the island and the caldera-rim fissure zone, scoria and lavas from the caldera-wall fissure zones, pyroclastics and lavas from intracaldera cones, and recent pyroclastic fall deposits on the outer cone. Eruptive products are mainly basaltic andesites and andesites, plus occasional dacite flows within the older cone. A postcaldera cone with fumarolic activity (Lofia) is situated in the northern part of the caldera; a crater lake of unknown depth occupies most of the remainder.

He waited out the four year period that his neighbors were allowed to object to the building and when time ran out he unveiled it. The local zoning board is calling 'foul' and demanding he tear down the castle.

The disappearance generated a media sensation in the United States and Aruba and sparked considerable interest in the Netherlands.

Holloway's disappearance was first discovered by her classmates, who were in Aruba celebrating their graduation from Mountain Brook High School, when she did not arrive at the airport for her return flight. Holloway was last known to have been seen outside of Carlos'n Charlie's, a local restaurant, with Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, but the three men denied knowing what happened to her, stating that they had dropped Holloway off at a Holiday Inn where she was staying. Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance and the Kalpoes were also arrested three times each, and each was released each time due to lack of evidence.

Aruban investigators conducted an extensive search of the island for Holloway, with the help of thousands of volunteers. FBI agents also participated in the search, as did fifty Dutch soldiers and specially equipped Dutch F-16s. The searches were without result, and Holloway remains officially missing to this day, although according to Aruban authorities she is most likely dead.

There is an attempt by the local community to preserve this old Denny's building.

Googie, also known as populuxe or doo-wop, is a subdivision of futurist architecture, influenced by car culture and the Space Age and Atomic Age, originating from southern California in the late 1940s and continuing approximately into the mid-1960s. With upswept roofs and, often, curvaceous, geometric shapes, and bold use of glass, steel and neon, it decorated many a motel, coffee house and bowling alley in the 1950s and 1960s. It epitomizes the spirit a generation demanded, looking excitedly upward towards a bright, technological and futuristic age.

The Googie or Populuxe style of architecture was characterized by space-age designs that depict motion, such as boomerangs, flying saucers, atoms and parabolas, and free-form designs such as "soft" parallelograms and the ubiquitous artist's-palette motif. These stylistic conventions reflected American society's emphasis on futuristic designs and fascination with Space Age themes.

As it became clear that the future would not look like The Jetsons, the style came to be timeless rather than futuristic. As with the art deco style of the 1930s, it remained undervalued until many of its finest examples had been destroyed. The style is related to and sometimes synonymous with the Raygun Gothic style as coined by writer William Gibson.

The operator was treated and released at the hospital. His name was not released.

During the approximately four hours the crane was in the water it released lubricating oil, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Dawn Lamb. The crane held a total of 50 gallons of hydraulic oil, but inspectors are not sure how much of that seeped into the water.

The amount was "nothing detrimental" to the environment, Lamb said. Also, the company arranged for a boom to be placed around the area within 45 minutes of the incident, she said.

The company, BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair, the Coast Guard and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health are investigating the incident to determine what caused the 100-foot crane to slip off the rail, said Dan Ebert, BAE human resources manager.

The crane, which is used to transport parts to and from ships, was moving but was not at a ship when it fell, so the operator and crane landed in water. Typically, a large vessel is lowered underwater, allowing water to fill it and a ship to be positioned over the dry dock vessel. Then the vessel is raised, lifting the ship to land for repair.

OMAHA, Neb. - A sniper opened fire at a busy Omaha mall, killing at least eight people, wounding at least five others and then killing himself, police officials said.

Sgt. Teresa Negron said most of the dead were inside Von Maur department store at Westroads Mall. She added that the shooter acted alone. The gunman was found dead on the third floor of Von Maur.
