On September 12, 2009, 51-year old census worker Bill Sparkman was found dead hanging from a tree at this remote cemetery in rural Clay County, Kentucky. He was found bound by duct tape with the word 'Fed' written on his chest with a felt-tip pen.

Babyn Yar (Ukrainian: Бабин Яр, Babyn Yar; Russian: Бабий Яр, Babiy Yar) is a ravine in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is located at the juncture of today's Kurenivka, Lukianivka and Syrets raions, between Frunze, Melnykov and Olena Teliha streets and St. Cyril's Monastery.

In the course of two days, September 29-30, 1941, a special team of German SS troops supported by other German units, local collaborators and Ukrainian police murdered 33,771 Jewish civilians after taking them to the ravine. The Babyn Yar massacre was the largest single mass killing for which the Nazi regime and its collaborators were responsible during its campaign against the Soviet Union and is considered to be "the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust".

In the months that followed, thousands more were seized and taken to Babyn Yar where they were shot. It is estimated that more than 100,000 local people, mostly civilians, of whom a significant number were Jews, were murdered by the Nazis there during World War II.

Chełmno extermination camp (German name Kulmhof) was an extermination camp of Nazi Germany that was situated 70 kilometres (43 mi) from Łódź, near a small village called Chełmno nad Nerem (Kulmhof an der Nehr, in German). This was in a part of Poland annexed by Germany as Reichsgau Wartheland in 1939. It was the first extermination camp, opened in 1941 to kill the Jews of the Łódź Ghetto and the Warthegau.

At least 153,000 people were killed in the camp, mainly Poles, Jews from the Łódź Ghetto and the surrounding area, along with Gypsies from Greater Poland and some Hungarian Jews, Czechs, and Soviet prisoners of war.]]>

Sobibor was a Nazi German extermination camp set up in the Lublin region of occupied Poland as part of Operation Reinhard; the official German name was SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor. Jews, including Jewish Soviet prisoners of war (POWs), and possibly Gypsies were transported to Sobibor by rail, and suffocated in gas chambers that were fed with the exhaust of a petrol engine. One source states that up to 200,000 people were killed at Sobibor. Thomas Blatt claims that "In the Hagen court proceedings against former Sobibor Nazis, Professor Wolfgang Scheffler, who served as an expert, estimated the total figure of murdered Jews at a minimum of 250,000."

After a successful revolt on October 14, 1943 about half of the 600 prisoners in Sobibor escaped; the camp was closed and planted with trees days afterwards. A memorial and museum are at the site today.

Sobibór is also the name of the village outside which the camp was built, which is now part of Lublin Voivodeship in Poland.

Belzec, Polish spelling Bełżec [ˈbɛu̯ʐɛt͡s], was the first of the Nazi German extermination camps created for implementing Operation Reinhard during the Holocaust. Operating in 1942, the camp was situated in occupied Poland about half a mile south of the local railroad station of Bełżec in the Lublin district of the General Government.

At least 434,500 Jews were killed at Bełżec, along with an unknown number of other Poles and Roma; only two Jews are known to have survived Bełżec: Rudolf Reder and Chaim Hirszman. The lack of survivors may be the reason why this camp is so little known despite its number of victims.

The battle of Checkpoint Pasta, was fought by the Italians in Mogadishu in Somalia.

On 2 July 1993, during the operation known as "Kangaroo 12" decided by the Command Italfor, Italian forces divided into two mechanized columns carried a mop in search of weapons of Haliwaa district, north of Mogadishu, to various targets close to Pastificio (the long shaped building) destroyed, close to which was composed of a block just called Pasta. According to some reconstructions of the real purpose was to capture Aidid, but no official confirmation was ever given by the Italian.

The mop

The two columns, respectively, Alpha and Bravo, the first came from the Old Port area of Mogadishu (south) and the second from the town of Balad (north), another important Italian garrison during the mission located about twenty miles from Mogadishu.

After mopping up operation, the two columns again the way back. Following serious riots erupted in the area, with broad participation by the local population to which snipers were mixed, the situation fell to the point of rendering need to request reinforcements from the column Bravo, who was near the Pastificio along the way Imperiale .

The ambush

Some Italian media Armored VCC-1, stopped in front of barricades erected by the Somalis, were immobilized with anti-tank rockets and the surrounding streets were blocked with barricades on the part of Somali militiamen in one of these armored vehicles died parachutist Pasquale Baccaro, which had been shot in the leg by a rocket, while two other crew members were injured. It was decided then the intervention of the relief column Alfa, almost arrived at the base, with APC and M60 tank and havy Centauro with 105mm guns, but did not have permission to use for the risk of hitting civilians, the crews of armored, with the support of Mangusta and AB205 heli, tried to protect other vehicles and injured comrades with machine guns, while trying to put in motion a vehicle immobilized and men afoot rake the area during this action was shot to death the sergeant incursore Stefano Paolicchi.

Only on two occasions was used heavy equipment: an unspecified number of M60 opened fire against the containers which were used as shield for militants, causing great losses, and Mangusta attack helicopter with a missile struck a TOW Italian Iveco VM 90 stolen by Somalis.

Among the men of the relief column, the lieutenant Millevoi Andrea, the head of a column of Centauro, was hit by a sniper while leaned his way to direct the fire of machine gun 12.7 mm

The account of this day of fighting in what was to be a mission of peace was of three soldiers killed:

* Andrea Millevoi, Lieutenant of the regiment Lancieri Montebello, Medaglia d'oro al valor militare (MOVM) memory;
* Stefano Paolicchi, Sergeant Major of the 9th Battalion paratroopers stormed Col Moschin, Medaglia d'oro al valor militare (MOVM) memory;
* Pasquale Baccaro, 186 ° Regiment Folgore Parachute Brigade, MOVM memory;

There were also 36 wounded by the Italian and an unknown number of Somali militiamen and civilians dead or wounded. Among the wounded, the then lieutenant Gianfranco Paglia, paratrooper, during which the action was struck by three bullets (one lung that caused internal bleeding and a cord that will force him to a wheelchair for life ) while trying to rescue the crew of an armored assets. Gianfranco Paglia, which has been conferred the gold medal for military valor to the action, despite having lost the use of the legs, remained in service.

The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily-armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Eugene Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and patrol and SWAT officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 28, 1997. Falcone was killed with his wife Francesca Morvillo (herself a magistrate) and three policemen: Rocco Di Cillo, Antonio Montinaro, Vito Schifani, near Capaci on the motorway between Palermo International Airport and the city of Palermo on May 23, 1992. The armored Fiat Croma in which he was travelling was blown up by a bomb (350 kg of explosive) that had been placed in trenches dug by the side of the road. When passing over the bomb, Falcone was driving his car at an estimated speed of nearly 100 mph (160 km/h.)

The murder was organized by Salvatore Riina in revenge for Falcone's conviction of dozens of mobsters in the Maxi-Trials. During the play, Booth snuck into the President's box and shot him from behind. Rathbone was stabbed while struggling with Booth, who would jump to the stage below and escaped outside to his horse. Booth was on the run for 12 days until being killed by a Union soldier at a farm in Port Royal, Virginia.

Natalee Ann Holloway (born October 21, 1986), an American student from Mountain Brook, Alabama, disappeared on May 30, 2005 at Fisherman's Huts during a high school graduation trip in Aruba. The disappearance generated a media sensation in the United States and Aruba and sparked considerable interest in the Netherlands.

Holloway's disappearance was first discovered by her classmates, who were in Aruba celebrating their graduation from Mountain Brook High School, when she did not arrive at the airport for her return flight. Holloway was last known to have been seen outside of Carlos'n Charlie's, a local restaurant, with Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, but the three men denied knowing what happened to her, stating that they had dropped Holloway off at a Holiday Inn where she was staying. Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance and the Kalpoes were also arrested three times each, and each was released each time due to lack of evidence.

Aruban investigators conducted an extensive search of the island for Holloway, with the help of thousands of volunteers. FBI agents also participated in the search, as did fifty Dutch soldiers and specially equipped Dutch F-16s. The searches were without result, and Holloway remains officially missing to this day, although according to Aruban authorities she is most likely dead.

Benazir Bhutto (21 June 1953 – 27 December 2007) was a Pakistani politician who chaired the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a centre-left political party in Pakistan affiliated to the Socialist International. Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state, having been twice elected Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Bhutto was the eldest child of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a Pakistani of Sindhi descent and Shia Muslim by faith, and Begum Nusrat Bhutto, a Pakistani of Iranian-Kurdish descent, of similarly Shia Muslim by faith. Her paternal grandfather was Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, who came to Larkana Sindh before partition from his native town of Bhatto Kalan, which was situated in the Indian state of Haryana.

Bhutto was sworn in for the first time in 1988 at the age of 35, but was removed from office 20 months later under the order of then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan on grounds of alleged corruption. In 1993 Bhutto was re-elected but was again removed in 1996 on similar charges, this time by President Farooq Leghari. Bhutto went into self-imposed exile in Dubai in 1998.

Bhutto returned to Pakistan on 18 October 2007, after reaching an understanding with President Pervez Musharraf by which she was granted amnesty and all corruption charges were withdrawn. On June 25, 2007, Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel were found dead in their Fayetteville, Georgia, home at around 2:30 p.m. EDT. The Fayette County, Georgia Sheriff's Department is currently investigating this case. Lieutenant Tommy Pope reported to ABC News that police entered Benoit's home on a "welfare check" after several missed appointments, leading to concerns. Pope also stated the police are not searching for any suspects outside of the house, as the instruments of death were located at the scene of the crime.Detective Bo Turner of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department told television station WAGA-TV that the case was being treated as a murder-suicide. The station reported that investigators believe that Benoit murdered his wife and son over the weekend and committed suicide sometime on Monday.

Peterson was arrested on April 18, 2003 in La Jolla, California in the parking lot of a golf course, where he claimed to be meeting his father and brother for a game of golf. At the time of his arrest, Peterson was carrying $15,000 in cash, had four cell phones, multiple credit cards belonging to various family members, a vast array of camping equipment, including knives, implements for warming food, tents, tarps, a dozen pairs of shoes, several changes of clothes, a gun, a map to Frey's workplace that had been printed that same day, a shovel, rope, 24 blister packs of sleeping pills, Viagra, and his brother's driver's license.

On the Ides of March (March 15) of 44 BC, a group of senators called Caesar to the forum for the purpose of reading a petition, written by the senators, asking him to hand power back to the Senate. However, the petition was a fake. Mark Antony, having vaguely learned of the plot the night before from a terrified Liberatore named Servilius Casca, and fearing the worst, went to head Caesar off at the steps of the forum. However, the group of senators intercepted Caesar just as he was passing the Theatre of Pompey, and directed him to a room adjoining the east portico.

As Caesar began to read the false petition, the aforementioned Casca pulled down Caesar's tunic and made a glancing thrust at the dictator's neck. Caesar turned around quickly and caught Casca by the arm, crying in Latin "Villain Casca, what do you do?" Casca, frightened, called to his fellow senators in Greek: "Help, brothers!" ("αδελφοι βοήθει!" in Greek, "adelphoi boethei!"). Within moments, the entire group, including Brutus, was striking out at the dictator. Caesar attempted to get away, but, blinded by blood, he tripped and fell; the men eventually murdering him as he lay, defenseless, on the lower steps of the portico. According to Eutropius, around sixty or more men participated in the assassination.

The dictator's last words are, unfortunately, not known with certainty, and are a contested subject among scholars and historians alike. In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Caesar's last words are given as "Et tu, Brute Then fall, Caesar." ("And you, Brutus? Then fall, Caesar."). However, this is Shakespeare's invention. Suetonius reports his last words, spoken in Greek, as "καί σύ τέκνον" (transliterated as "Kai su, teknon?"; "You too, child?" in English). Plutarch says he said nothing, pulling his toga over his head when he saw Brutus among the conspirators.]]>

The 2002 Bali bombing occurred on October 12, 2002 in the tourist district of Kuta on the Indonesian island of Bali. The attack was the deadliest act of terrorism in the history of Indonesia, killing 202 people, 164 of whom were foreign nationals (including 89 Australians), and 38 Indonesian citizens. A further 209 were injured.

The attack involved the detonation of three bombs: a backpack-mounted device carried by a suicide bomber; a large car bomb, both of which were detonated in or near popular nightclubs in Kuta; and a third much smaller device detonated outside the United States consulate in Denpasar, causing only minor damage.

Various members of Jemaah Islamiyah, a violent Islamist group, were convicted in relation to the bombings, including three individuals who were sentenced to death. Mohammed Bouyeri assassinated van Gogh in the early morning of Tuesday November 2, 2004, in Amsterdam in front of the Amsterdam East borough office (stadsdeelkantoor) on the corner of the Linnaeusstraat and Tweede Oosterparkstraat streets. He shot him with eight bullets from a HS2000 (a handgun produced in 2000 in Croatia), and Van Gogh died on the spot. Bouyeri slit van Gogh's throat and then stabbed him in the chest. Two knives were left implanted in his torso, one pinning a five-page note to his body. The note threatened Western governments, Jews and Hirsi Ali (who went into hiding). On November 15, 1959, he and three members of his family were murdered at the hands of parolees Dick Hickock and Perry Smith during an attempted robbery. Furthermore, all rooms have been renumbered using odd numbers only; the Days Inn has a policy prohibiting their employees from disclosing which room had been number 158. Signs are also posted at the beginning of each driveway leading to the back from the Registration Office stating, "Only registered guests beyond this point."

On the morning of June 22, 1922, an armed mob of sriking mine workers several hundred strong laid seige to the Southern Illinois Coal Company strip mine between Marion and Herrin. The nonunion strikebreakers who had been working the mine eventually surrendered, and were forced by the mob to march north and west to the Powerhouse Woods. Here, they were told to run as the striking workers fired upon them while they fleed into the woods. In total 23 men, 20 strikebreakers and guards and 3 union men, were killed. The record producer and songwriter lives in this 10-bed mansion in the Los Angeles suburbs. Known as "Castle Pyrenees", the estate was once a 28-room hotel. On February 3, 2003, Spector was arrested for murder after the body of 40-year-old starlet Lana Clarkson of Los Angeles was found at his faux-castle mansion in Alhambra, California. Police responded to a 9-1-1 phone call from one of Spector's neighbors and discovered Clarkson, who had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. On November 20, 2003, Spector was indicted for Clarkson's murder.]]>
