The Rolle Canal (also known as the Torrington Canal) in North Devon, England runs 6 miles from Landcross, where it joins the River Torridge, to the limekilns at Rosemoor. It has one sea lock at Landcross, an inclined plane at Weare Giffard – to raise it 60 feet – and a five arch aqueduct (known as the Beam Aqueduct) over the River Torridge.

The canal's construction was started as a private venture in 1823 by John Rolle, the then Baron Rolle. In this the canal is unusual as no Act of Parliament had to be obtained. The idea for the canal was originally proposed by his father Denys Rolle but for various reasons nothing had come of those plans. James Green was employed as the lead engineer. The Baron Rolle laid the foundation stone of the aqueduct in an event marked by the firing of a cannon. The cannon burst, resulting in the injury of a man by the name of John Hopgood, who the Baron compensated with a year's salary.

Completed in 1827 it was used to carry limestone and coal for the kilns as far inland as possible and to carry Marland clay to the port of Bideford for export. The canal cost between £40,000 and £45,000 to construct. The canal shared many of its design features with the Bude Canal, unsurprisingly as the Bude Canal had been part of the inspiration for the scheme and the projects shared the same lead engineer. Similarities include the use of trains of tub boats and the use of canal inclined planes rather than locks. The inclined plane was powered by a water wheel. The canal received its water supply from a weir on the River Torridge which also supplied two mills with power.

The aqueduct is referred to as the canal bridge in Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter.

Around 1852 the canal was leased to George Braginton who among other things held the position of Mayor of Torrington a number of times. Exactly when the lease ended is uncertain but certainly at a date no later than 1865. With the lease ended the control of the canal passed to the then owner Mark Rolle (the nephew of the second wife of John Rolle).

In 1871 the canal was closed and sold to the London and South Western Railway to make way for the railway from Bideford to Torrington. At one point the railway company wished to abandon the project but at Mark Rolle's insistence the railway was built.

Some parts of the canal are still visible today, including the aqueduct (now a viaduct), the sea lock (although without any gates) and some parts of the inclined plane. Part of the railway alignment is now a cyclepath. The Annery kiln lies close to the old canal and can be seen from the Tarka Trail. The canal has been designated a Devon County Wildlife Site.]]>

Lake Biwa Canal is a waterway in Japan built during the Meiji Period to transport water, freight, and passengers from Lake Biwa to the nearby City of Kyoto. This waterway was also used as Japan's first hydroelectric power generator, which served to provide electricity for Kyoto's trams.

As of 2008, the waterway is not used so much to generate electricity, but rather for water supply, fire-fighting and irrigation purposes.

In 1900 an inclined plane was built to the side of the locks. The aim was partly to speed up the passage of boats, but also as part of an effort to allow the passage of wide-beam barges instead of just narrowboats.

It was designed by Gordon Cale Thomas and had 2 tanks or caissons, each capable of holding 2 narrowboats or a barge. The caissons were full of water, and so balanced each other. The lift was powered by a 25 horsepower (19 kW) stationary engine. The land for the project was purchased for £1,595 and with the entire project costing £39,244 by 24 June 1900.

The inclined plane had a journey time of 12 minutes for 2 boats up and 2 down and improved the speed of passage up the hill tremendously. Unlike the locks, where water flowed downhill every time a boat passed through, on the inclined plane almost the same amount of water went up and down the hill. Only the displaced water is moved, thus saving a great deal of water and giving better control of this vital resource.

There was a plan to build a similar inclined plane at the Watford Locks at the southern end of the canal's summit level. However, this was never carried through, and as the Watford Locks were never widened, the economic benefits of the plane could not be fully realised. Thus, despite its obvious effectiveness, the Foxton Inclined Plane was mothballed in 1911 to save money. After that date it saw occasional use when the locks were undergoing maintenance.

In 1927, dismantling of the incline began, so that it could be sold for scrap. That year the chimney on the engine house was demolished and its bricks used for various canal repairs.

The plane today:
The remains of the plane can still be seen, and the site explored by visitors (to a limited extent).

In the building alongside the locks, the former boiler house for the plane's steam engine, there is a small museum covering the history of the locks and the plane, and other aspects of the local canal.

The Peterborough lift lock is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and is Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

The dual lifts are the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world, rising 19.8 m (65 ft). This was a considerable accomplishment when conventional locks usually only had a 2 m (7 ft) rise. However it is not the highest boat lift in the world - the lift at Strépy-Thieu in Belgium being greater in both capacity (1,350 tonnes) and height difference (73.15 m).

No external power is needed, the lift lock functions by gravity alone using a counterweight system. When one side reaches the top position it stops about 5 cm (2 inches) below the adjoining canal's water level. When the gates open water flows into the ship basin until the water level rebalances. The weight of the extra water is enough to power the hydraulic lift. As the top level lowers to the bottom position it pushes the other side up to the top position where the cycle starts over again.

In the 1980s, a visitor's centre was built beside the lock. It offers interactive simulations of going over the lift lock in a boat, and also historical exhibits detailing the construction of the lift lock.

Many local residents of Peterborough skate on the canal below the lift lock in the winter.

The Peterborough lift lock was named a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1987.]]>

It forms the Lock 36 of the Trent-Severn Waterway, situating at the highest section of the canal (256.2 m). It is Canada's second highest lift lock, being surpassed only by the Peterborough Lift Lock, located on the same canal.

The Fontinettes Boat Lift (French: Ascenseur des Fontinettes) was built in the late 19th century in Arques, near Saint-Omer in the Pas-de-Calais to connect the River Aa and the Neufossé canal in France.

It was designed to avoid the need to use five locks which took some 90 minutes to change height by 13 meters. It was inspired by the similar Anderton Boat Lift built in 1875 in Cheshire, England.

The Fontinette Boat Lift was built between 1885 and 1888 and worked until 1967. It was then replaced by a big, single lock built further upstream. The lift was rescued from demolition by a local conservation group and guided tours are available during the summer months for a small fee.

Frederik VII's Canal or Løgstør Canal is a 4.4 km long and approx. 3 meter deep canal running south from Løgstør to Lendrup Strand. It was instituted to facilitate the passage between Aggersund and Løgstør Bredning in Limfjord by maintaining traffic within Løgstør Land, which was so shallow that we had to tranship goods shipments to flat-bottomed barges (kåge) to get them.

The John Rankin Lock (formerly named Lock D) is part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It is located in Itawamba County, Mississippi, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Fulton. It is named for John E. Rankin, Mississippi's First District Representative in the United States House of Representatives.

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (popularly known as the Tenn-Tom) is a 234 mile (377 km) artificial waterway that provides a connecting link between the Tennessee and Tombigbee rivers. The waterway begins at Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River, then flows southward through northeast Mississippi and west Alabama, finally connecting with the established Warrior-Tombigbee navigation system at Demopolis, Alabama.

After 12 years of construction, the waterway and its seventeen public ports and terminals opened to commercial traffic in January 1985. In addition to the original 110,000 acres (445 km²) of land acquired for the construction and operation of the project, another 88,000 acres (356 km²) have been purchased and managed by the two state conservation agencies for wildlife habitat preservation and mixed use including hunting and parks.

The elevation change between the two ends of the waterway is 341 feet (104 m).

The Hay Inclined Plane is a canal inclined plane in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, with a height of 207 feet (63 m). It was located on a short stretch of the Shropshire Union Canal that linked the industrial area of Blists Hill with the River Severn. The inclined plane was in operation from 1792 to 1894. It can be visited as part of the Blists Hill Victorian Town.

An inclined plane is a system used on some canals for raising boats between different water levels.

Typically, such a feature consists of a slope, up which there are two sets of rail tracks, and boats are raised between different levels by sailing into giant water-filled tanks, or caissons, which have wheels on the bottom and watertight doors at each end, and which are perpendicular to the slope. These are then drawn up or down hill on the rails, usually by means of cables being pulled by a stationary engine. In almost all designs two caissons are used, one going up and one down, to act as counterweights to make the system more efficient. When the caisson has reached the top or bottom of the slope, the doors are opened and the boat leaves. On some canals an inclined plane was used just to the transfer the loads up or down to the boats on a rail system.

The slots in the thumbnail were the perfect size for custom made barges carrying coal and iron ore. They would pull into the slot, be pulled out on rails and winched down the inclined track to the SW to the Severn River.]]>

In effect the 5-rise consists of five locks connected together with (as always with a staircase) no intermediate "pounds": the lower gate of each chamber forms the upper gate of the chamber below. There are therefore five chambers, and six gates (the top and bottom gates and four intermediate gates). As the Leeds Liverpool canal is a wide canal, the chambers are 14 feet wide, and each "gate" consists of two half-gates, "hinged" from opposite sides of the canal. Each half gate is slightly more than 7 feet wide, so that the two halves close in a "V" shape (pointing "upstream"). Water pressure on the "uphill" side of the gate thus keeps it tightly closed until the water levels on either side are equal, when the gate can be opened and the boat moved to the next chamber (see canal locks for more information on how a lock is constructed and operated).

The 5-rise is the steepest flight of lock in the UK, with a gradient of about 1:5 (a rise of 59ft 2in over a distance of 320ft). The intermediate and bottom gates are the tallest in the country. Because of the complicaitions of working a staircase lock, and because so many boaters (both first-time hirers and new owners) are inexperienced, a full-time lockkeeper is employed, and the locks are padlocked "out of hours". Barry, the "locky", after twenty years based here is now almost infamous on the local canals: he has been nominated for a CBE.

It opened on March 21, 1774 and was a major feat of engineering at the time. When the locks and therefore the canal from Gargrave to Leeds was opened in 1774 a crowd of 30,000 people turned out to celebrate it! The first boat to use the locks took just 28 minutes and the whole first trip is described here as it was in a newspaper of the time - the Leeds Intelligencer. The smaller Three Rise opened at the same time just a few hundred meters further down.]]>

The Kennet and Avon Canal. constructed between 1794 and 1810, rises 237 feet by means of 29 locks, 16 of them in a straight line at Caen Hill. The locks were built by John Rennie up the side of steep hill where the locks are so close together that the normal arrangement of pounds between locks would not have provided sufficient water storage for the operation of the locks. Rennie's solution to this problem was to provide long side pounds beside the locks. The locks became derelict shortly after the WW2 and, after years of restoration work along the whole of the canal, were reopened by HM The Queen on 8th August 1990.]]>

Saimaa Canal (Finnish: Saimaan kanava, Swedish: Saima kanal) connects the lake Saimaa with the Gulf of Finland. The canal, inaugurated in 1856, was built between the Finnish cities of Lappeenranta and Vyborg (Viipuri).

In the Moscow Peace Treaty (1940) the Karelian Isthmus along with the city of Vyborg was ceded to the Soviet Union, thus splitting the canal in half and ending all traffic.

A treaty in 1963 leased the canal area to Finland for 50 years. A new deeper canal was constructed and opened to traffic in 1968. The length of the canal itself is 42.9 km.

A system of inland waterways and canals in the 120 interconnected lakes of the south-central and south-east part of Finland are reached through the canal. The length of deep channels in lake Saimaa (with an authorised draught of 4.2m) is 814 km. Dimensions of the locks in the canal and waterways is length 85m, breadth 13.2m.

Negotiations to extend the lease time are presently going on between Finland and the Russian Federation (2005).]]>

The Bridgewater Canal was opened in 1761 to carry coal from Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley. The Duke's land agent, John Gilbert, saw that it was possible to connect the canal directly to the mines by way of an underground canal. The Paw Paw Tunnel is one of the major features of the canal, built as a bypass to some very difficult terrain along the Potomac River in Paw Paw Bends. Here the river makes a series of gargantuan loops, the tunnel route cutting across one large double loop takes 1 m. where river takes 6. While tunnel route involved cutting thru 3118' of solid rock, the MD shore of river route contains some impressive cliffs coming right down to the river To have followed river would have required either crossing to W.Va. shore and back hacking out canal along those cliffs or damming river at lower end of bend to form a slackwater and cutting a towpath along cliffs or putting towpath on W.Va. side. The alternatives were thoroughly debated within the canal co. and, due largely to enthusiastic advocacy of newly-appointed engineer, Charles B. Fisk, the tunnel plan won out. Even when work was well advanced the board of directors seriously contemplated abandonment of the partially-completed tunnel in favor of a dam. Decision was made to proceed with the tunnel in Feb. 1836, with completion date set for July 1838. In actual fact, tunnel was not completed until 1850, though holed thru in 1840. Two other men responsible for building of the tunnel were Fisk's assistant, Elwood Morris and the contractor, Lee Montgomery.

Somehow despite failing finances and violent unrest, work continued thru 1840 and 1841, but in 1842 the canal co. collapsed and work on the entire canal ceased. The canal was completed and operating up to Dam No. 6 (134.1), about 20 m. below the tunnel. In addition, much of the stretch above the tunnel to Cumberland had been finished. Montgomery, who now disappears in a maze of lawsuits, his personal fortune sunk in abortive attempt to finish the tunnel, had actually driven it thru, but a great deal of work remained. North of the tunnel the deep cut, plagued by slide was not fully cleared, and of course the canal in this cut had to be completed. The tunnel itself was not yet completed and still had to have brick lining installed. Morris by this time found Montgomery and his patented machine made poor brick. Fortunately for the canal, state and federal interests were involved and ways were found to raise enough money to resume work under a new contractor in 1847. The tunnel and canal were finished and opened to traffic in 1850.

At the tunnel entrance the tunnel lining is dressed stone and from then on to 26' below south portal it is a brick four courses thick except under the vertical shafts where it is six. Tunnel has 12' radius set on 11' vertical walls. Towpath runs on a ledge about 4' wide and equipped with a stout railing a little better than waist high. Top rail is a square stout beam, in many places showing deep ruts burned into it by tow ropes of mule drawn barges. There are wooden railings or bumpers on both inner sides of tunnel to keep barges from scraping brick walls. Height of tunnel 24 1/2'; 17 1/2' above water. Volume of rock cut out in tunnel 82,000 cubic yds. Greatest depth 44'. Canal 17' wide.

"Weep" holes are occasionally placed at spring line of arch to prevent seepage of water from building up and coming directly thru brick, an admirable precaution, but one sees that it does not seem entirely effective as a great many patches are visible in the lining. Park Service did a thorough renovation of interior of tunnel in 1966; it now remains in excellent shape. The two sets of vertical shafts from surface of hill overhead are fairly easy to locate by extensive seepage of water coming thru brick lining from them.]]>

"The City of Miami, incorporated in 1896 with a population of some 300, was not even a decade old when Government Cut was opened in the summer of 1905. Now, 100 years later, Miami-Dade County boasts a population of nearly 2.3 million, while the Port of Miami is recognized throughout the world with the dual distinctions of being the Cruise Capital of the World and the Cargo Gateway of the Americas.

Although historical records show that wooden piers in what was then the unincorporated town of Fort Dallas began receiving supplies for local settlers' plantations as early as the 1840s - and Native Americans used the Miami River for transport of goods long before that - it was not until the opening of Government Cut that a navigable channel was in place to connect the inland waters of the city with the Atlantic Ocean.

While early written accounts vary as to details of events, it is agreed that the initial formation of Government Cut was authorized through a June 13, 1902, act of the Committee on Rivers and Harbors of the U.S. House of Representatives. Because the channel was formed as a result of government action, it earned the name by which it is still known today.

By the summer of 1905, a 900-foot slice of the south tip of the Miami Beach peninsula had been cut through and a ceremony was held, presided over by Miami Mayor John Sewell and attended by throngs who came to the site by boat. Just before the final portion of the cut was to be made by dredging equipment, the equipment broke (a circumstance some believe was intentional), and Sewell wound up using a shovel to move the last few spades-worth of material. Accounts describe a force of water pushing back land on both sides of the cut, and, within a day, a wide area of water joined the ocean with Biscayne Bay."

On December 19, 2005 a Grumman G-73T Turbine Mallard seaplane owned by Chalk's Ocean Airways crashed into the Cut, killing all 20 onboard. The plane, on its way to Bimini, Bahamas, took off from its base at Watson Island. It was the first fatal accident in their history dating back to 1919.

In 1832 an elaborate scheme was launched to improve Goose Creek and Little River with "slack water" navigation in order to capture the "wagon trade from the Valley" and "provide cheap transportation to market ... for the product of the many flouring mills then in operation on the waters of Goose Creek" (Harrison, p. 551). This close proximity to water transportation would certainly have benefitted Waterford as well, since goods would have to be hauled overland less than ten miles. Survey work was not completed until 1849; by then, the Manassas Gap Railroad was already in place to more efficiently handle the same traffic. That, combined with the tremendous cost overruns of the initial construction, caused the demise of the Goose Creek Canal after only the first lock was completed.]]>

The Monocacy Aqueduct is the largest of the eleven aqueducts erected along the C&O Canal, and is often described by many historians as one of the finest canal features in the United States. Ten of the eleven aqueducts remain as key features of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, which was designated as a National historical park in 1971. The Catoctin Aqueduct collapsed after its piers were gradually undercut and a flash flood took it down in 1972.

Construction of the Monocacy Aqueduct began in 1829 and was completed four years later. Three separate contractors labored on the immense stone structure, which was constructed for $127,900. The plan for the Monocacy Aqueduct, often referred to as C&O Canal Aqueduct No. 2, was for a stone masonry structure with a waterway of 19 feet at the bottom and 20 feet at the top. The towpath parapet wall is 8 feet wide and the upstream wall is 6 feet wide. Benjamin Wright drew the plans with 6 piers, 2 abutments and 7 arches, each with a span of 54 feet. The piers are 10 feet thick with pilaster at each end. The aqueduct is 438 feet in length. Much of the building material was large granite stone blocks quarried at the base of nearby Sugarloaf Mountain.

Following the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood, the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration designed a steel banding system to stabilize the structure and installed a steel rod reinforcing system. The National Park Service and park supporters have long been concerned about the structural stability of the aqueduct and a major engineering evaluation is underway to determine stabilization needs and associated cost. The C&O Canal National Historical Park and its partners plan to undertake a major stabilization project for the aqueduct to ensure long-term sustainability for the structure. The project would provide for the removal of the steel banding support system and allow the visiting public to view the structure as originally constructed.]]>

The pier in the middle of the canal [at mile 9.9] was once part of a pivot bridge. The knoll left by the road embankment offers a view of the remains of the circular pivot mechanism. The bridge was built in 1941 to provide access to a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The canal company had long since ceased operations, but a pivot bridge was still needed because the National Park Service was operating barges in the canal in this area.
