Gate Tower Building is a 16-story office building in Fukushima-ku, Osaka, Japan. And what makes it notable is the highway that passes through the 5th-7th floors of this building. The highway is part of the Hanshin Expressway, a network (239.3 km) of expressways surrounding Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, Japan. The Gate Tower Building is Japan's first building to have a highway pass through it. And it had been nicknamed "beehive" referring to its appearance as a "bustling place".

The Umeda Exit of the Ikeda Route of the Hanshin Expressway system passes through this building. The expressway is the tenant of these floors. The elevator doesn't stop on floor 5th-7th, floor 4 being followed by floor 8. These floors consist of elevators, stairways, machinery and other stuff. The highway passes through the building as a bridge, held up by supports next to the building making no contact with the building itself. The building has a double core construction, with a circular cross section and special care is taken by providing surrounded structure to the highway to protect the building from noise and vibration. Generally expressways are built underground, and passing through a building is an extremely rare occasion. It dates back to 1983, when the redevelopment of this area was decided upon, "building permits were refused because the highway was already being planned to be built over this land. The property rights' holders refused to give up, and negotiated with the Hanshin Expressway corporation for approximately 5 years to reach the current solution."]]>

In the end, the constant jokes were just too much to take for the long-suffering residents of Butt Hole Road.
Groups of youths used to visit the street and bare their backsides for photographs while many delivery firms simply refused to believe it existed.
And coachloads of amused American tourists frequently turned up to view the sign after it appeared in a US book.
And so despairing households in the suburban street in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, decided that the road's name simply had to change.

The North Yungas Road (also Grove's Road, Coroico Road, Camino de las Yungas, El Camino de la Muerte, Road of Death, and Death Road) is a 61 to 69 km road (depending on source) leading from La Paz to Coroico, 56 km (35 miles) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia. It is legendary for its extreme danger and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the "world's most dangerous road". One estimate is that 200-300 travelers were killed yearly along the road. The roadbed and the surrounding terrain intersect at such an angle that downhill looks like uphill and vice versa. This Gravity Hill, like the others, has a body of folklore purporting to explain the phenomenon. The guilt-ridden claim Gravity Hill is the site of a Native American burial ground; cars roll the wrong way because ghosts are trying to push intruders off their land. Others claim Gravity Hill is the site of a buries meteorite with a powerful magnetic force. They may be thinking of the Sylacauga Meteorite, which isn't magnetic and which is now on display, above ground, in Tuscaloosa. By studying the perspective of the cliff and the distinctive round hill on Hovedo island, we could determine Munch's position with remarkable precision, within a few meters. This viewpoint is 100 meters from the modern tunnel portals where the E6 motorway passes through the Ekeberg hill, measured in the direction toward the intersection where Mosseveien joins with the E18 motorway. From this spot, Munch's direction of view in the drawing was toward the southwest exactly where the Krakatoa twilights appeared in the winter of 1883-84.]]>

It is used to teach firefighters in training how to deal with road traffic accidents. The BBC used the location to film the docudrama The Day Britain Stopped about a series of catastrophic transport accidents. The iconic scene from Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, which supposedly takes place at "Prarie Stop, Highway 41... about an hour and a half's drive from Chicago" actually was filmed near Bakersfield, CA.

In the film's most-renowned and brilliant sequence, the crop-dusting sequence, Roger is lured into the flat countryside (of Illinois or neighboring Indiana) by enemy spies on the pretext of meeting and connecting with the fabled Kaplan - his non-existent double. The dapper businessman arrives by bus at a barren road-crossing out in wide-open farm country surrounded by plowed-up dirt and cornfields, incongruously dressed in a neat suit in bright sunlight. [The actual filming site was located north of Bakersfield, CA, outside the towns of Wasco and Delano, just east of the intersection of Corcoran Road and Garces Highway (155).] He is entirely exposed and vulnerable - a modern, urban individual without any amenities or artificial resources - there isn't even background music on the soundtrack until the climax of the set-piece. Surrealistically, suspense slowly builds as cars pass through the desolate area. A truck sprays him with road dust. A car drops a man on the other side of the road from him to wait for a bus - is this man Kaplan? A buzzing crop-dusting plane is engaged in dusting a nearby field. The man remarks that it is odd to have a small plane crop-dusting a crop on a field devoid of crops:

That's funny...That plane's dustin' crops where there ain't no crops.

After the man boards a bus (a symbol of civilization) and it drives away (leaving Thornhill defenseless), the distant, innocent and harmless crop-spraying plane immediately and without warning terrorizes him, swooping down like a bird of prey out of a clear blue sky. It flies almost at ground level as it sprays machine-gun fire. Thornhill ducks for cover from the strafing attack, but there is nowhere to hide and no way to defend himself in the vast expanse of the setting - it is the third vicious attack on his life. The plane circles and returns a few times as he fails to flag down and stop a car.

Thornhill runs for cover in an open cornfield, but the bi-plane showers him with a load of poisonous, white powdery pesticide to flush him out. He returns to the road and runs in front of an approaching semi-trailer Magnum Oil truck - flagging it down and forcing it to stop. He falls under the gasoline truck's front bumper as the plane uncontrollably crashes into the truck's gas tank. After a terrific explosion, the two truck drivers shout that they should run away to avoid harm from more explosions. Other drivers in pickup trucks stop to watch the fireball, giving Roger an opportunity to jump into one of the onlookers' vacated trucks and head back to Chicago. ]]>

Rue Mouffetard is a street in the Ve arrondissement of Paris, France.

Situated in the Ve arrondissement of Paris, Rue Mouffetard is one of Paris's oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods. These days the area has many restaurants, shops, and cafés, and a regular open market.

This street was once a roadway along a flank of a hill called in the 13th century, but most likely from Roman times, "mont Cétarius" or "mont Cetardus": "Mouffetard" is a derivation of this name. Over the centuries the rue Mouffetard has appeared as rue Montfétard, Maufetard, Mofetard, Moufetard, Mouflard, Moufetard, Moftard, Mostard, and also rue Saint-Marcel, rue du Faubourg Saint-Marceau ("street of the suburb Saint-Marceau") and rue de la Vielle Ville Saint-Marcel ("street of the Old Village Saint-Marcel").

The origins of this thoroughfare are ancient, dating back to Neolithic times. As with today's rue Galande, rue Lagrange, rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève and rue Descartes, it was a Roman road running from the Roman Rive Gauche city south to Italy.

From the Middle Ages a church along this section of roadway became centre of a "bourg Saint-Médard" (Saint-Médard village), and from 1724 was integrated into Paris as the main artery of the "Faubourg Saint Médard".

The area remained relatively unchanged because of its location on the Saint Geneviève hill, which protected it from Baron Haussmann's redevelopment during the reign of Napoleon III.]]>

A new plan in Kansas City for the downtown Front Street approach to Interstate 435 will involve driving on the left side of the road. Traffic engineers trying to ease jams and reduce accidents came up with the idea. It will be the first of its kind in America. Drivers will reach a traffic signal, then be guided to the opposite side of the road, which will be divided by a concrete median with glare screens to minimize the disorienting sight of oncoming cars to the right. After about 650 feet, motorists reach another traffic signal and are returned to the right side of the road. Ramps before the first and second lights will allow motorists to enter I-435. The concrete-column air shaft serves as ventilation for the I-395/Center Leg Freeway/Third Street tunnel, a project that got its start in 1955. The first portion of the project was built 1966-1973 and the second 1979-1982. The project was originally designed to connect all the major highways surrounding D.C., but ended up only connecting I-395 to New York Avenue (Route 50), leading to some of the lovely beach traffic entanglements we experience every summer.

The Sideling Hill road cut is a 340-foot deep road cut where Interstate 68 cuts through Sideling Hill, about 6 miles west of Hancock in Washington County, Maryland. It is notable as an impressive man-made mountain pass, visible from miles away and one of the best rock exposures in Maryland and indeed in the entire northeastern United States. Almost 810 feet of strata in a tightly folded syncline are exposed in this road cut. Although other exposures may surpass Sideling Hill in either thickness of exposed strata or in quality of geologic structure, few can equal its combination of both. There is an Exhibit Center to help provide the public with a better understanding of the geology of the cut. A pedestrian walkway bridge crosses I-68 for better access to the cut, along with a picnic area and rest area facilities.]]>
