Mount Lycabettus (In Greek: Lykavittos, Λυκαβηττός) is a Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens, Greece. At 277 meters above sea level, the hill (also known as Lycabettos or Lykabettos) is the highest point in the city that surrounds it. Pine trees cover its base, and at its peak are the 19th century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant.

The hill is a popular tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki.

Lykavittos appears in various legends. Popular stories suggest it was once the refuge of wolves, possibly the origin of its name (which means "the one (the hill) that is walked by wolves"). Mythologically, Lykavittos is credited to Athena, who created it when she dropped a mountain she had been carrying from Pallene for the construction of the Acropolis after the box holding Erichthonius was opened.]]>

Verkhoyansk is a town in the Sakha Republic, Russia, situated on the Yana River, near the Arctic Circle, 675 km from Yakutsk. There is river port, an airport, a fur-collecting depot, and the center of a reindeer-raising area. Population: 1,434 (2002 Census).
A cossack settlement was founded in 1638 90 km south-west of the modern town. In 1775 it was moved to the left bank of the Yana River, to facilitate tax collection. It received the status of town in 1817. Between the 1860s and 1917 the town was a place of political exile.
Verkhoyansk is noted chiefly for its exceptionally low winter temperatures, with a January average of −58°F (−50°C). It lies in the coldest area of the Northern Hemisphere (a.k.a. Stalin's Death Ring), and together with Oymyakon is one of the places considered the northern Pole of Cold The lowest temperature recorded there in 1892, was −69.8°C (−93.6°F). Temperatures in Verkhoyansk have spanned 105°C (189°F): from −68°C (−90.4°F) to 37°C (98°F). L'Enfant planned Washington around a right triangle, having its 90° vertex at the Washington Monument, its eastern vertex at the Congress House, and its northern vertex at the President's House, now called the White House. The west side of L'Enfant's triangle forms a natural prime meridian passing through the President's House. The following five features on this meridian are listed from south to north. In 1793, Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson surveyed and marked with a wooden post the southwest vertex of L'Enfant's triangle, establishing the second Washington meridian, the one through the President's House. The wooden post was replaced by the Jefferson Pier in 1804, while Jefferson was President of the United States. After removal and replacement several times, it was permanently replaced in 1889 by a two foot (0.7 m) square, two foot tall granite pier, now 119 m WNW of the center of the Washington Monument. Its longitude is 77°2'11.56"W (NAD 83). In 1890, the Meridian Stone was placed at the center of the Ellipse on the same meridian. It is an 18 inch (45 cm) square granite post set flush with the ground. In 1923, the Zero Milestone was placed on the same meridian on the north side of the Ellipse, intended to represent the zero mileage point for all United States roads. It is a granite pillar about 18 inches (45 cm) square and about 3.5 feet (1 m) tall. The most prominent feature on this Washington meridian (besides the White House) is 16th Street, which extends due north from the White House. The last feature on this meridian no longer exists. It was a small freestone obelisk placed in 1804 on top of a hill 1.5 miles (2.5 km) north of the President's House, hence the name Meridian Hill. It was at the northern end of 16th Street, north of Florida Avenue, before 16th Street was extended northward soon after 1900, covering it up. Now adjoining the east side of 16th Street where the obelisk once stood is Meridian Hill Park.

The Zero Milestone is a monument in Washington, D.C. intended as the initial milestone from which all road distances in the United States should be reckoned.

Designed by Washington architect Horace W. Peaslee, the monolith is about 2 feet square and about 4 feet high. It is made of precambrian granite from Milford, Massachusetts, light pinkish to greenish gray, with spots of black biotite mica. The bronze disk on top of the milestone is an adaptation from ancient portolan charts of the so-called wind roses or compass roses from the points of which extended radial lines to all parts of the then known world—the prototype of the modern mariner's compass.

The monument has engravings on five surfaces:

* East: STARTING POINT OF SECOND TRANSCONTINENTAL MOTOR CONVOY OVER THE BANKHEAD HIGHWAY, JUNE 14, 1920

In his plan for Washington, Pierre Charles L'Enfant intended a column to be placed 1 mile east of the Capitol, "from which all distances of places through the continent were to be calculated." Instead, in 1804, the Jefferson Stone or Jefferson Pier was placed on the meridian of the White House due west of the Capitol (119 m WNW of the center of the Washington Monument) to mark the Washington meridian, 77° 02' 12.0".

The current Zero Milestone monument was conceived by good roads advocate Dr. S. M. Johnson, formally proposed on June 7, 1919. He was inspired by ancient Rome's Golden Milestone located in the Forum. On July 7, 1919, a temporary marker for the Zero Milestone was dedicated on the Ellipse south of the White House during ceremonies launching the Army's first attempt to send a convoy of military vehicles across the country to San Francisco, California. On June 5, 1920, Congress authorized the Secretary of War to erect the current monument, design to be approved by the Commission of Fine Arts and installed at no expense to the government. The Mitad del Mundo (Spanish for Middle of the World) is a monument located in San Antonio de Pichincha, Ecuador, to the north of Quito, that marks one of the points where the equator goes through the country. The pyramidal monument, with each side facing a cardinal direction, is 30 meters (98 feet) tall, and is topped by a 4.5 meter diameter, 5-ton globe. Inside the monument is the Ethnographic Museum of the Middle of the World, a small museum with exhibits of elements of Ecuadorian culture, such as clothing, ethnic groups, and activities. A small town surrounding the monument fuctions as the tourist center, replicating a colonial Spanish town and called "Ciudad Mitad del Mundo" (Middle of the World City).

The area had been the object of a number of studies attempting to determine the exact location of the equator, with the first result being obtained in the early 1700s by Charles Marie de La Condamine. At the end of the 18th century, General Charles Perrier, from the French Academy of Sciences, was sent to lead a mission to verify that result. Later, in 1936, with the support of the French American Committee, an Ecuadorian geographer named Dr. Luis Tufiño built a 10 meter monument in San Antonio de Pichincha. In 1979, the monument was moved 7 km to the west, to the town of Calacalí. Today, a new and much larger monument stands in San Antonio de Pichincha, after being constructed between 1979 and 1982. This lake, now only a salt puddle, millions of years ago was a fresh water lake a thousand times larger than it is today. The lake's continental basin at 154.33 meters (505 feet), is the second deepest below sea level after the Dead Sea at 391 meters (1282.48 feet). The surface of the lake is completely encrusted with an ice-like layer of salt. The shores are like quicksand. Because of these conditions the local Uigur people call it "Moonlight Lake", because you can be easily misled by the appearances of mirages, the dry appearing surface so that when you walk on it you get bogged down. Because of the high salt content in the water no fish live in the lake nor do birds land there or on the salty shores. The only animals seen are the field mice and hares as they scurry away when a person approaches to close.

The basin of the plate-shape holds many rich resources - vitriol, Glauber's salt, coal and an alkaline soil. A chemical plant at lakeside refines Glauber's salt for use in detergents and also as a diuretic.

a common name for sodium sulfate decahydrate, Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O; it occurs as white or colorless monoclinic crystals. Upon exposure to fairly dry air it effloresces, forming powdery anhydrous sodium sulfate . Johann Glauber was the first to produce the salt (from Hungarian spring waters). The naturally occurring salt is called mirabilite. Glauber's salt is water soluble, has a salty, bitter taste, and is sometimes used in medicine as a mild laxative; it is also used in dyeing.

Chinese scientists will re-measure the lowest land point, Aydingkol Lake, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The re-measurement project is expected to be approved by the superior authority and launched next year, said Liu Geqing, a senior official with Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Land Surveying and Mapping Department.

Located in Turpan Basin in eastern Xinjiang, the freshwater lake is the lowest place in China and the second lowest place in the world. The lake is also dubbed China's Dead Sea, since its altitude is merely a little higher than the Dead Sea in western Asia.

The re-measurement could help the world find out the exact altitude of the lake, Liu said.
