It has been suggested the island's name is related to the sea shanty "Dead man's chest", probably first written by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island.

Langlütjen is the name of the two uninhabited artificial islands created in the 19th century, Langlütjen I and Langlütjen II, in the north off the coast of the district Wesermarsch in Lower Saxony, Germany. The islands are administered by the town of Nordenham. Their size is 16,000 and 17,000 square metres, respectively.

On the small islands are the remains of fortifications of what was first the Prussian Navy and later the Kaiserliche Marine. Its function was to protect the harbours of Bremen and Bremerhaven, but the islands were never afflicted in active warfare.

Langlütjen II was sold to a private owner in January 2006. Langlütjen I was sold around the same time.]]>

Deer Island is one of the Thousand Islands. It lies between the United States and Canada, close to Alexandria Bay, New York. It is owned entirely by the Russell Trust Association and is used as a Skull and Bones retreat.

Some journalists, Alex Jones included, have suggested that Deer Island plays host annually to regular meetings and initiation rites of the Skull and Bones society, and that the island is historically significant for being prominent in truther theories concerning the New World Order and freemason lore. Nisida is a volcanic islet of the Flegrean Islands archipelago, in southern Italy. It lies at a very short distance from Cape Posillipo, just north of Naples; it is now connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The islet is almost circular, with a flooded crater forming the bay of Porto Paone on the southwest coast. It has a diameter of c. 0.5 km and a highest altitude of 105 m.

In ancient times Lucius Licinius Lucullus built a villa on Nisida, and also Marcus Iunius Brutus had a partician residence here. Here, the latter's wife Porcia, the daughter of Cato Uticensis, committed suicide. The claim is made that some of archaeological remains on Nisida are, indeed, those of the villa of Brutus, and that here is where the conspiracy to assassinate Julius Caesar was hatched. In the 16th century a castle was built, which was subsequently a fief of the Macedonio family.]]>

French explorer and adventurer Xavier Rosset is about to embark on a 300 day trip to live alone on a remote tropical island in the South Pacific. His adventures will be filmed and used for a 52 minute documentary.

Tofua Caldera, in Tonga, is the summit caldera of a steep-sided composite cone that forms Tofua Island. Pre-caldera activity is recorded by a sequence of pyroclastic deposits and lavas constituting the older cone, followed on the northern part of the island by froth lavas or welded and unwelded ignimbrite. Following caldera collapse, lavas were erupted from the northern part of the island and the caldera-rim fissure zone, scoria and lavas from the caldera-wall fissure zones, pyroclastics and lavas from intracaldera cones, and recent pyroclastic fall deposits on the outer cone. Eruptive products are mainly basaltic andesites and andesites, plus occasional dacite flows within the older cone. A postcaldera cone with fumarolic activity (Lofia) is situated in the northern part of the caldera; a crater lake of unknown depth occupies most of the remainder.

Most historical eruptions have been small explosions from Lofia cone along the northern caldera rim. The eruptions of 1958-59 caused most of all islanders to evacuate for a year or more.]]>

Redonda is an unpopulated Caribbean island, a part of Antigua and Barbuda[1]. It lies 56.2 km (34.9 miles) SW of the main island, Antigua. It is a remnant of the cone of an extinct volcano steeply protruding from the sea. The land area measures between 1.6 km² (400 acres) and 2.6 km² (640 acres). The highest peak is 296 m (971 feet) high.
Christopher Columbus discovered Redonda in 1493 on his second journey, claimed it for the Spanish crown and named it Santa María la Redonda (redonda being Spanish for "round", reflecting the island's shape), but did not land on it.
In the 1860s, the island became a British possession. The island was claimed by Matthew Dowdy Shiell as the "Kingdom of Redonda" in 1865. Since then the Royal lineage of Redonda has largely had a literary theme, with the title being passed to writers and the like such as John Gawsworth. The current title of "king" of Redonda is disputed by at least nine people.
During the decades following the 1860s, the guano (phosphine oxide) deposits of the island were mined for fertiliser, with an annual yield of up to 7,000 tons. Only during this time was the island inhabited (population 120 in 1901).
During the First World War, the mining operations ceased and the workers left the island, which has been uninhabited since then. It became a dependency of Antigua and Barbuda in 1967.
In 2007, the Wellington Arms pub in Southampton, England attempted to declare themselves an embassy of the uninhabited island in order to gain diplomatic immunity from a nation-wide ban on smoking in enclosed workplaces, including pubs.

Bell Rock Lighthouse is the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse and was built on Bell Rock (also known as Inchcape Rock) in the North Sea, 12 miles (18 km) off the coast of Angus, Scotland, east of the Firth of Tay (56°26.052′N 2°23.236′W). The rock was the scene of many shipwrecks as it lies just below the surface of the sea for all but a few hours at low tide.

According to legend, the rock is called Bell Rock because of 14th century attempt by the abbot from Arbroath to install a warning bell on it. The bell lasted only one year until it was removed by a Dutch pirate. This story is immortalised in The Inchcape Rock, a famous poem by 19th century poet Robert Southey.

By the turn of the 18th century, it was estimated that the rocks were responsible for the wrecking of up to six ships every winter 1. In one storm alone, 70 ships were lost off the east coast of Scotland. The Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson had earlier proposed in 1799 the construction of a lighthouse on Bell Rock, but cost concerns and the relative radicality of his proposal caused it to be shelved. However, the loss of the warship HMS York and all on board in 1804 resulted in a furore in Parliament which eventually led to legislation being passed in 1806 enabling construction to begin.

The lighthouse was built by Stevenson between 1807 and 1810. The lamp was first lit on 1st February, 1811. The design has some similarities to the earlier Eddystone Lighthouse designed by John Smeaton which was also built on an offshore reef using interlocking stones, but also newer features, such as rotating lights, with alternating red and white lights. Standing at 35 m high, the light is visible from 35 statute miles (55 km) inland. The working of the lighthouse has been automated since 1998.

Later, the Chief Engineer on the project John Rennie had disputed the amount of credit that Stevenson had in the part of the design -- Rennie had claimed that Stevenson's curve on the base of the lighthouse was inappropriate, though Stevenson had created the earlier designs based on the Eddystone.

The lighthouse operated in tandem with a shore station, the Bell Rock Signal Tower, built in 1813 at the mouth of Arbroath harbour. Today this building houses the Signal Tower Museum, a visitor centre detailing the history of the lighthouse.

The challenges faced in the building of the lighthouse have led to it being described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World.]]>

Île Saint-Paul (St. Paul Island) is a very small island forming part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands in the Indian Ocean. It is about 85 kilometres (53 miles) south of the larger île Amsterdam, located at 38°43′19″S, 77°31′44″E. It is a rocky and uninhabited island measuring no more than five km (three miles) at its greatest width and is completely devoid of trees.

A scientific research cabin on the island is used for scientific or ecological short campaigns, but there is no permanent population.

Île Saint-Paul is one of three islands which is an antipode of the United States. It correspondes to Firstview, Colorado. The other two antipodes are île Amsterdam and Kerguelen Island.

There is speculation that officers from the German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis hid treasure near the entrance of the bay during World War II

Inaccessible Island was discovered by the Dutch ship t'Nachtglas in 1652, and named after it, with the phrase "inaccessible" added in parentheses after the name as the sailors who landed were unable to get further inland than the beach. The latter name has persisted to this day, reflecting both the difficulties in visiting this island and the difficulties in reaching its interior.
The Stoltenhoffs

After Corporal Glass and his family settled on Tristan da Cunha in 1816, goats and pigs were put ashore to provide a source of meat. They were still there when the German Stoltenhoff brothers landed in 1871. Their aim was to make their fortune from sealing on the island, but they had to be rescued by HMS Challenger in 1873, when she called briefly to examine the flora and fauna. The goats and pigs had barely kept them alive, and their adventures are related in the book "Shelter from the Spray".]]>

Saltholm (Salt Islet) is an island in the Oresund, the strait that separates Denmark from Sweden. It is located to the east of the Danish island of Amager in Tårnby municipality. The island is very flat, with a maximum altitude of 5 m above sea level, and it can be extensively flooded if persistent east winds cause a tide surge in the Baltic Sea. It is 7 km long and 3 km wide.

The island is a nature reserve for birds. There is a human population of three, who manage the reserve farm in order to keep grazing levels ideal for the nesting birds. Humans have lived in some numbers on the island since the middle ages.

Located close to Copenhagen, it was, used between 1709 and 1711 as a quarantine island when the capital suffered plague and cholera outbreaks.

In 1915 cannon batteries were installed on the island to defend the capital.

In 1941 plans were drawn up to build a new Copenhagen airport on the island. During the 1960s and 70s these plans were extensively studied. However, local protests blocked the plan, and they were eventually formally dropped in 1979.

St Michael's Mount (Cornish name: Carrack Looz en Cooz) is a lofty pyramidal tidal island, exhibiting a curious combination of slate and granite, rising 400 yards (366 m) from the shore of Mount's Bay, situated in Penwith in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, in the extreme south western peninsula of the island of Britain. It is united with Marazion by a natural causeway cast up by the sea and passable only at low tide.

Its Cornish language name — literally, "the grey rock in the wood" — may represent a folk memory of a time before Mount's Bay was flooded. Certainly, the Cornish name would be an accurate description of the Mount set in woodland. Remains of trees have been seen at low tides following storms on the beach at Perranuthnoe. The Cornish legend of Lyonesse, an ancient kingdom said to have extended from Penwith toward the Isles of Scilly, also talks of land being inundated by the sea.

Historically, St Michael's Mount was a Cornish counterpart of Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France.

Burgh Island is closely linked to Agatha Christie, as it served as the inspirational setting for both And Then There Were None as well as Hercule Poirot mystery Evil Under the Sun. The 2002 TV adaptation of Evil Under The Sun used the island as a filming location. Several scenes from the BBC’s 1987 dramatisation of Christie’s story Nemesis were shot in the Burgh Island Hotel, as it was felt that the location was ideal for the film.

Other famous visitors to the Burgh Island Hotel have included The Beatles who used the hotel when they were playing a concert in Plymouth, well away from their passionate fans. Noel Coward visited the hotel, intending to stay three days and ended up staying three weeks. Other guests who have reputedly used the hotel include Edward and Mrs. Simpson and it is said that Eisenhower and Churchill met there in the weeks leading up to the D-Day invasion.]]>

Marion Island, the larger of the two islands, is located at 46°54′45″S, 37°44′37″E. It is roughly 19 km long and 12 km wide with a surface of 290 km² and a coastline of some 72 km, most of which are high cliffs. The highest point on Marion Island is Mascarin Peak (Formerly State President Swart Peak), reaching 1242 m above sea level. Boot Rock is about 150 meters off the northern coast.

Prince Edward Island is much smaller (only about 45 km²) and lies some 12 nm (19 km) to the northeast. Prince Edward Island is located at 46°38′39″S, 37°56′36″E. At the Von Zinderen Bakker Peak northwest of the center, it reaches a height of 672 meters. There are a few offshore rocks along the northern coast, like Ship Rock (100 meters north of northernmost point) and Ross Rocks (500 meters from the shore).

The island group is about 955 nm (1770 km) south-east of Port Elizabeth in mainland South Africa.

Both islands are of volcanic origin. Marion Island is one of the peaks of a large underwater shield volcano that rises some 5000 m from the sea floor to the top of State President Swart Peak. The volcano was thought to be extinct, but broke out again in 1980 and is since classed as "active".]]>

Its Indian name was Quotenis, but it is called Dutch Island because the West India Company established a trading post on the island in 1625, trading Dutch goods, cloths, implements. and liquors for the Indians' furs, fish, and venison. The island was bought from the Indians in 1654. During the Civil War, it was a rendezvous for battalions of the 14th Regiment of the R.I. Heavy Artillery. The federal government took over the island in 1863 and constructed earthen batteries: the honeycomb tunnels and gun emplacements of Fort Greble were built after the Spanish-American War and enlarged until 1902. The island is part of the Bay Islands Park system.

Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay which offers spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin County Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. It is a California state park, Angel Island State Park. The highest point on the island, almost exactly at its center, is Mount Livermore at 788 ft. (240 m). The island is almost entirely in Marin County, California, although, surprisingly, there is a small sliver (0.7%) at the eastern end of it which extends into the territory of San Francisco County. The United States Census Bureau reported a land area of 3.107 km² (1.2 sq mi) and a population of 57 persons as of the 2000 census.

Until about ten thousand years ago, Angel Island was connected to the mainland; it was cut off by the rise in sea levels due to the end of the ice age. From about two thousand years ago the island was a fishing and hunting site for Coast Miwok Native Americans. In 1775 the Spanish naval vessel San Carlos made the first European entry to the San Francisco Bay under the command of Juan de Ayala. Ayala anchored off Angel Island, and gave it its modern name (Isla de los Angeles); the bay where he anchored is now known as Ayala Cove.

Like much of the California coast, Angel Island was subsequently used for cattle ranching; this destroyed most of the native oak woodland and brush cover. In 1863, during the American Civil War, the U.S. Army established a camp on the island (now known as Camp Reynolds or the West Garrison), and it subsequently became an infantry garrison during the US campaigns against Native American peoples in the West. In the later nineteenth century, the army designated the entire island as "Fort McDowell" and developed further facilities there, including what is now called the East Garrison or Camp McDowell. During the Spanish-American War the island served as a discharge depot for returning troops. It continued to serve as a transit station throughout the first half of the twentieth century, with troops engaged in the First and Second World Wars embarking and returning there. During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were also held on the island. The army abandoned the island in 1946, but returned in the 1950s when a Nike missile base was constructed; this was decommissioned as obsolete in 1962.

From 1910 to 1940, the Angel Island Immigration Station processed approximately 175,000 Asian immigrants entering into the US, serving a similar role to Ellis Island for European immigrants. Angel Island is sometimes referred to as "The Ellis Island of the West." The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 provided tough entry restrictions, so many immigrants waited on the island for as long as two years while they exhausted appeals. The conditions of buildings on Angel Island were poor. Many of these immigrants carved poems in Chinese on the walls of the island's buildings, poems which have been anthologized and studied by scholars. One unhappy prisoner carved in the wall, "For what reason must I sit in jail? It is only because my country is weak and my family poor." A fire burned down the administration building in 1940, and all subsequent immigration processing took place in San Francisco.

A quarantine station was opened in Ayala Cove (then known as Hospital Cove) in 1891.

In 1938, hearings concerning charges of membership in a proscribed political party against labor leader Harry Bridges were held on Angel Island before Dean James Landis of Harvard Law School. After eleven weeks of testimony that filled nearly eight thousand pages, Landis found in favor of Bridges. The decision was accepted by the labor department and Bridges was freed.

Angel Island became a State Park in 1958.

On June 11, 1962, three prisoners apparently escaped from the prison on nearby Alcatraz Island. Some of the materials used in their escape attempt later washed up on Angel Island, aiding in the investigation by the FBI.

In the 1970s, the Chinese American community successfully lobbied the State of California to designate the Immigration Station as a State Landmark. Today, the Angel Island Immigration Station is a federally designated National Historic Landmark.

There are two active United States Coast Guard stations - at Point Blunt and Point Stuart - on the island.]]>

The Palm Jebel Ali is the middle-sized island of the three Palm Islands (Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira). It is located on the Jebel Ali coastal area of the emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The unique man-made palm-shaped island will consist of a trunk, a crown with 17 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that will form a water-breaker.

The Jebel Ali Palm is more of an entertainment destination for both adults and children, which caters to both residents and tourists. The island will also be 50% larger than the Palm Jumeirah, and will include six marinas, a 'Sea Village', a water theme park and water homes built on stilts between the fronds and the crescent.
