Winston Lagoon is a lagoon indenting the southeast coast of Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean, about 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) northeast of Cape Lockyer. The feature is roughly portrayed on an American sealer chart of the 1860 period. It was sighted from the air by Lieutenant Malcolm Smith, RAAF, pilot of the ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) seaplane that made the first reconnaissance flight over the island in 1948. Lieutenant Smith proposed that it be named Lake Winston after his wife. In view of his death in an aircraft accident shortly afterward, this proposal was adopted by Australian Antarctic Names and Medals Committee (ANCA) with only a change of generic term.]]>

This was a man-made lake and water recreation area for the residents of nearby El Paso named, 'Mountain Shadow Lakes'. It was in business from 1988 to 2005. The lake is now dry. Abandoned buildings and the parking lot can be seen on the south side of the lake. Dominica's Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park - Dominica's World Heritage site. It is a flooded fumarole 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of Roseau, Dominica. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water that is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapour. The lake is approximately 200 ft (60 m) across.

On July 6, 2007, adventure-film maker George Kourounis became the first person to ever cross the boiling lake from above, suspended by ropes over the most violently boiling section. This event was filmed for the TV series Angry Planet.

Dominica's Boiling Lake is the second largest hot lake in the world. The largest is Frying Pan Lake, located in Waimangu Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand.]]>

The church of St. Nicholas in Mavrovo, Macedonia was built in 1850 and stood for a 153 years until it was decided an artificial lake was needed in the village. At one point the church was fully submerged, but it keeps rising again, especially in summer with the droughts of the 21st century.

Lake Doberdò (Italian: Lago di Doberdò, Slovene: Doberdobsko jezero) is the name of a sinkhole in the Province of Gorizia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. It is located on the westernmost edge of the Karst (Italian: Carso) plateau, close to the border with Slovenia. It is named after the village of Doberdò (Slovene: Doberdob).

It has an area of approximately 0.36 km², depending on the time of year, and it is located around 2 km southwest of the village of Doberdò, not far from the Adriatic coast. The water is filtered through various ponors, and it is connected with the springs feeding the Timavo River, which are located a few kilometers southeast. The depth varies from 5 to 10 m.

The lake is usually largest in autumn, when it is 1.2 km long and 350 m wide. During the frequent drought periods, the lake almost completely disappears, becoming a marsh-like area.

1914 a pond in Bergen with golden orfes had to be restored and there were too many fishes but what to do with them?

Two local doctors brought them here in buckets. Today the fish live happily in their new environment and have breeded a lot.

The fish are protected by law and it's forbidden to catch them.

Calima Lake (Spanish: Lago Calima) is the largest artificial lake in Colombia with an area of 70 km². It is located in the municipality of Darién in the Valle del Cauca Department.

The lake is part of a hydroelectric project for generating power for the department. C.V.C (Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca) started construction of the lake by 1961.

Calima Lake has become a place for water sports and leisure activities. Lake Wissota is a reservoir in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, USA, just east of the city of Chippewa Falls. It covers an area of 6,024 acres (24.38 km2) and has a maximum depth of 72 feet (22 m). The lake was formed by the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Chippewa River, completed in 1917. The dam was built by the Wisconsin-Minnesota Light and Power Company. An engineer on the project, Louis G. Arnold, named the lake by combining the beginning of "Wisconsin" and the ending of "Minnesota".

In the 1997 film Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio's character Jack Dawson mentions that he went ice fishing on the frozen waters of Lake Wissota as a boy. This would have been impossible, as the Titanic sank in 1912, three years before construction on the dam that formed Lake Wissota began.]]>

Kranji Reservoir (Chinese: 克兰芝蓄水池; Malay: Empangan Air Kranji) is a reservoir in the northern part of Singapore, near the Straits of Johor was a former freshwater river that flowed out into the sea that dammed at its mouth to form a freshwater reservoir. It can also be classified as an estuary. The dam has a road bridging the two banks, and now prevents the sea from coming in, and is home to a marsh.

In 2002, a mother and son were picking shells from the shores of Kranji Reservoir when the PUB opened up the barrage to let water into the reservoir from the sea. Both of them died. PUB later clarified that a sound was made before the barrage was opened to warn people not to get too near the reservoir.]]>

Caddo Lake currently holds the distinction of being the only natural lake in Texas, and even that is in some dispute. The lake was artificially dammed in the early 1920s after oil was discovered in the vicinity. Due to the damming, some believe the lake is technically no longer natural.

2010 was a monumental year for Manitoba native Jonathan Toews. He was a member of the gold medal winning Canadian hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he captained the Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup title, and he won the NHL's playoff MVP honors (the Conn Smythe Trophy).

Shortly after his unbelievable hockey season ended, he learned that his home province would name a lake after him. The lake is in a remote area of northern Manitoba, about 95 kilometers north of Flin Flon.

The news came with some controversy, as the practice of naming lakes in Manitoba is usually reserved for fallen members of the military.

The Jerome Park Reservoir is located in Jerome Park, a neighborhood in the North Bronx, New York City. It was built in 1906 to serve the Croton Aqueduct as part of the New York City water supply system.

The reservoir is surrounded by DeWitt Clinton High School, the Bronx High School of Science, Lehman College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College and numerous apartment houses, including the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative, administered by the Park Reservoir Housing Corporation.

It is named for Jerome Park Racetrack, a part of the former Old Bathgate Estate which opened in 1866 and which was the site of the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867. The racetrack was condemned, bought by New York City and closed in 1889 to make way for the reservoir.

In 1996, residents fought to stop the city from converting the site to a water treatment plant. It was thought that the noise, chemicals, and unsightly construction would decrease the quality of life for area residents. The treatment plant was built in another part of the Bronx, minutes away in the middle of Van Cortlandt Park.

The reservoir was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.]]>

Nottely Dam is a hydroelectric and flood storage dam on the Nottely River in Union County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. The dam is owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which built the dam in the early 1940s as a flood control structure and to help regulate flow at nearby Hiwassee Dam. The dam impounds the Lake Nottely of 4,180 acres (16.9 km2). While the dam was built primarily for flood storage, a generator was installed at Nottely in the 1950s, giving it a small hydroelectric output.
