The Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) is one of the Corps most remote and isolated post. The center was established in 1951 as a Cold Weather Battalion with a mission of providing cold weather training for replacement personnel bound for Korea. After the Korea conflict the name was changed to the Marine Corps Cold Weather Training Center. As a result of it’s expanded role it was renamed the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in 1963. MCMWTC operated on a full time basis until 1967 when it was placed in a caretaker status as a result of the Vietnam War. Construction of the observatory began in 1878, and the 8 meter dome was completed in 1908. It housed a mechanical equatorial reflector. In 1946 Mr. Gentilli funded a dome and 60 cm, and in 1958 a spectrograph was installed. A 106-centimetre (42-inch) telescope was installed in 1963 funded by NASA, and was used to take detailed photographs of the surface of the Moon in preparation for the Apollo missions. A new 2 meter telescope, known as the Bernard Lyot Telescope was placed at the observatory in 1980 on top of 28 meter column built off to the side to avoid wind turbulence affecting the seeing of the other telescopes. Mount Diablo is a mountain in Contra Costa County, California in the San Francisco Bay Area, located south of the town of Clayton and northeast of Danville. It is an isolated 3,849 feet (1,173 m) upthrust peak that is visible from most of the San Francisco Bay Area and much of northern California.

The peak is the centerpiece of Mount Diablo State Park, a state park of approximately 20,000 acres (80 km²) in area.

The summit building was constructed by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) from 1939-1942.

According to a sign at the summit, it is possible to view the second greatest surface area seen from any peak in the world, exceeded only by the 19,340 foot (5,895 m) Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. This myth was promulgated by early real estate promoter Robert Noble Burgess, who built the first auto roads to Diablo's summit, as a draw to his Mt. Diablo Estates project, c. 1914-1917. The Mt. Kilimanjaro qualifier was first added in the 1928 Standard Oil Bulletin, which described the new Standard Diablo (SD) Tower.]]>

Tiger Hill is a mountain in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the highest peak in the sector, and its recapture was the most important objective for Indian forces during the Kargil War.

The Battle of Tiger Hill encompasses the battles fought in and around the the peak of Tiger Hill between Indian Army and Pakistani and allied force from the final week of May till second week of June, 1999 during the Kargil War in 1999. The Battle, with the concomitant battle for the adjoining peak of Tololing, culminated with Indian forces recapturing the peak on July 4, 1999. Indian forces involved in the operation included the 18 Grenadiers and the 8th Sikh regiment. The battle was one of costliest operations for the Indian forces in the entire conflict, with casualties nearly forty personnel killed and nearly a hundred wounded in the entire operation. Pakistan at the time denied regular troop involvement but Indian figures estimated twenty one killed in the battle for the peak itself.]]>

Gent-Wevelgem is a professional cycle road race held in Belgium in early April each year, falling on the Wednesday between the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix. The event was first run in 1934, and it is often called the sprinters' classic due to its flat finishing terrain.Its early-season date means riders are often tested by wind and rain, while the route also takes them twice over the difficult cobbled climb of the Kemmelberg where key splits often emerge. Very few editions of Gent-Wevelgem actually end in a bunch sprint, usually having an elite group (including the top sprinters) fighting for victory. In recent years, the race has been situated on the Wednesday between de Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, and while not officialy part of the Vlaamse Wielerweek (Flemish cycling week), it can be seen as an unofficial finale of the series of cycling classics in Flanders. Since 2005 the race is part of the UCI ProTour.

Despite its name, the race hasn't started in Ghent for many years, traditionally beginning on the market square of Deinze. The course then sets westward towards the Belgian coastal region, after which it moves southwards near the French border towards the Monteberg and Kemmelberg, before heading towards Wevelgem. ]]>

The Mortirolo Pass has been featured in Giro d'Italia several times. The first time was in Stage 15 of 1990 Giro d'Italia, between Morbegno and Aprica, using the road from Mazzo di Valtellina.

Since Marco Pantani died in early 2004, stages of the Giro that go over Mortirolo feature a special prize to the first man at the top of the pass called Cima Pantani. In the early morning hours of March 4, 2002, on a mountaintop called Takur Ghar in southeastern Afghanistan, al Qaeda soldiers fired on an MH-47E helicopter carrying a
Special Operations Forces (SOF) reconnaissance element. This fire resulted in a Navy SEAL, ABH1 Neal Roberts, falling out of the helicopter, and began a chain of events
culminating in one of the most intense small-unit firefights of the war against terrorism;
the death of all the al Qaeda terrorists defending the mountain top; and, sadly, resulting also in the death of seven U.S. servicemen. Despite these losses, the U.S. forces involved in this fight again distinguished themselves by conspicuous bravery. Their countless acts of heroism demonstrated the best of America’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) as Army, Navy and Air Force special operators fought side by side to save one of their own, and each other, and in the process secured the mountain top and inflicted serious loss on the al Qaeda.

America has plenty of oil, much of it right here in Montana. How many times have you heard that? Yet it’s true. Gov. Brian Schweitzer puts the reserves beneath the state at 40 billion barrels, an impressive number compared to the country’s proven reserves that total 21 billion barrels, which excludes those yet to be counted in Montana and North Dakota. Adding North Dakota and Canada’s oil, part of the same formation under Montana, the numbers get much bigger, and Schweitzer’s estimate is low compared to those of experts in the field.]]>

The glacier is named after Walter Furtwängler, who along with Ziegfried Koenig, were the fourth to ascend to the summit of Kilimanjaro in 1912.

Richard Louis Proenneke (1916-2003), known as Dick, has become an icon of wilderness living in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Born in Iowa, he worked as a farmhand and rancher before joining the Navy the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After receiving a medical discharge in 1945 (following a bout of rheumatic fever), he again took up ranching. In 1949, he made his first visit to Alaska at the invitation of a friend. He lived and worked in Alaska off and on for years, making his first visit to Twin Lakes in 1962. By 1967, he had begun work on a cabin there. It was completed in 1968.

His was not the first cabin on Twin Lakes, nor was it the biggest. Proenneke's cabin, though, stands out for its remarkable craftsmanship, which reflects his unshakeable wilderness ethic. The cabin was built using only hand tools, many of which Proenneke himself had fashioned. Throughout the thirty years he lived at the cabin, Proenneke created homemade furniture and implements that reflect his woodworking genius.

Dick Proenneke had the foresight to film the construction of his cabin, intending to leave step-by-step instructions for creating a hand-built structure. He also kept detailed journals, recording everything from his daily activities to wildlife sightings and visits from friends and fans.

Proenneke's wilderness ethic was simple: Twin Lakes and the wildlife therein should not suffer for his presence. He reused almost everything, even carefully crafting buckets and storage boxes from used gas cans. This off-the-grid lifestyle resonated with people around the world.

In 1973, Proenneke's friend Sam Keith edited a volume of his journal entries entitled One Man's Wilderness (reissued in 1999). A documentary film, Alone in the Wilderness, was produced in 2003, and is often shown on Public Broadcasting stations. John Branson, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve historian and longtime friend of Proenneke's, edited a new group of journal entries in 2005 which were published as More Readings from One Man's Wilderness.]]>

The Hope Slide was one of the largest landslides ever recorded in Canada. It occurred in the morning hours of 9 January 1965. An earlier, small avalanche had forced four people to stop their vehicles a few miles southeast of the town of Hope, British Columbia (150 km east of Vancouver), on a stretch of the Hope-Princeton Highway below Johnson Peak. As those people contemplated waiting for clearing crews or turning around, a small earthquake below the mountain triggered the main slide, which obliterated the mountain's southwestern slope.

The slide buried the victims and their vehicles under a torrent of 46 million cubic meters of pulverized rock, mud, and debris 85 m thick and 3 km wide, which came down the 2000-metre mountainside . This mass of debris completely displaced the lake below with incredible force, throwing it against the opposite side of the valley, wiping all vegetation and trees down to the bare rock, then 'splashed back' up the original (now bare) slope before settling.

Jebel Barkal or Gebel Barkal (Arabic: جبل بركل) is a small mountain located some 400 km north of Khartoum, in Sudan, on a large bend of the Nile River, in the region called Nubia. Around 1450 BC, the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III extended his empire to that region and considered Gebel Barkal its southern limit. There, he founded the city of Napata that, about 300 years later, became the capital of the independent kingdom of Kush. The 25th Dynasty Nubian king Piye later greatly enlarged the New Kingdom Temple of Amun in this city and erected his Year 20 Victory stela within it.

The ruins around Gebel Barkal include at least 13 temples and 3 palaces, that were for the first described by european explorers in the 1820’s, although only in 1916 archeological excavations were started by George Reisner under a joint expedition of Harvard University and the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston. From the 1970’s, explorations continued by a team from the University of Rome La Sapienza, under the direction of Sergio Donadoni, that was joined by another team from the Boston Museum, in the 1980’s, under the direction of Timothy Kendall. The larger temples, such that of Amon, are even today considered sacred to the local population.

For these reasons, the mountain, together with the historical city of Napata and other ancient sites, were considered by UNESCO, in 2003, World Heritage Sites.

The mountain is 98 m tall, has a flat top, and apparently was used as a landmark by the traders in the important route between central Africa, Arabia, and Egypt, as the point where it was easier to cross the great river.]]>

Opened in 1940 by the Zamboni family. In 1949, Frank J. Zamboni invented an ice resurfacing vehicle to speed up the amount of time to create a clean ice surface. Over the years, his invention evolved, using this rink as a test area for new ideas.

The rink itself was an innovation of itself, and it's design was patented in 1946. Instead of a grid of pipes under the surface (which caused ripples on the surface), a series of 1/2" thick tanks were the foundation.

Originally an outdoor rink, the southern California weather conditions proved too tough, so it was converted to an indoor facility. Over the years, many improvements have been made to keep it modernized. It is still owned by the Zamboni family.

Zamboni ice resurfacers are still built at the company's nearby headquarters, with over 8500 units sold.]]>

Just the shape of almost a perfect cone is enough for the sight, but there is more. The story is that Montezuma's treasure is buried in the base of the hill. Once a year the hill opens up to take a handful and if your too greedy, then the mountain closes up on you. Thus the cross on top is to placate the ghostly apparition of the greedy ones. Skipsea Castle is a Norman Motte and Bailey castle located south of Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England on the B1249 road at Skipsea Brough. All that remains visible today are the earthworks, having been destroyed by the order of Henry III of England

Skipsea Castle was built in and around 1086, in the years following the Norman Conquest by Drogo de la Bouerer, the First Earl of Holderness, in order to defend against Viking raids. He is related to William the Conqueror through marriage to William's cousin, and participated in the Norman Invasion of England. For this, William the Conqueror placed Drogo's name on the "immortal Roll of Honour of Battle Abbey at Senlac or Hasting", and rewarded Drogo with "so-called 'isle' of Holderness".

Although Drogo built the castle, he eventually fled back to Flanders because death of his wife whom he "unhappily killed". Drogo's hasty flight out of England has given rise to the legend that "Drogo murdered his wife by giving her a poison draught which he led her to believe was a love potion. He then rode a fast horse to the king's court, borrowed a large sum of money from William and took ship to the continent before news of his deeds could reach the court. The ghost of a 'lady in white' is said to haunt Castle Hill".

In the 13th century, William de Froz II, Lord of Holderness rebelled against the king. As a result, in 1221 William de Froz II was excommunicated and Skipsea Castle was destroyed. Eventually, William de Froz II reconciled with King Henry III in 1227. Skipsea Castle was returned to William de Froz II, but without any defences. According to local historians, "the gap in the earthwork known as the Scotch Gap is evidence of this".]]>

Mount Cameroon, one of Africa's largest volcanoes, rises to 4095 m above the coast of west Cameroon. The massive steep-sided volcano of dominantly basaltic-to-trachybasaltic composition forms a volcanic horst constructed above a basement of Precambrian metamorphic rocks covered with Cretaceous to Quaternary sediments. More than 100 small cinder cones, often fissure-controlled parallel to the long axis of the massive 1400 cu km volcano, occur on the flanks and surrounding lowlands. A large satellitic peak, Etinde (also known as Little Cameroon), is located on the southern flank near the coast. Historical activity, the most frequent of west African volcanoes, was first observed in the 5th century BC by the Carthaginian navigator Hannon. During historical time, moderate explosive and effusive eruptions have occurred from both summit and flank vents. A 1922 SW-flank eruption produced a lava flow that reached the Atlantic coast, and a lava flow from a 1999 south-flank eruption stopped only 200 m from the sea.]]>
