For many years after its introduction, it was also the heaviest aircraft ever flown from an aircraft carrier. Designed as a land-based aircraft, the Neptune never made a carrier landing, although a small number of aircraft were converted for carrier use and successfully launched. The type was successful in export, seeing service with several armed forces. The Neptune shares the P-2 designation (albeit under a different designation system) with the Curtiss P-2 Hawk, a much earlier biplane.
The Lockheed A-12 was a reconnaissance aircraft built for the Central Intelligence Agency by Lockheed's famed Skunk Works, based on the designs of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson. The A-12 was produced from 1962 through 1964, and was in operation from 1963 until 1968. The single-seat design, which first flew in April 1962, was the precursor to both the U.S. Air Force YF-12 interceptor and the famous SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft. The final A-12 mission was flown in May 1968, and the program and aircraft retired in June of that year.

After the Navy agreed work on the design continued into 1956 with several changes being made to the design.
Designed in response to a 1945 Royal Navy request for a dedicated anti-submarine aircraft the first Gannet flew in 1949, but did not enter service until 1955. The Gannet is widely regarded as one of the least attractive aircraft ever built, however its large fuselage made it ideal for adaptation to other uses. The AEW 3 variant was designed as an airborne early warning aircraft for fleet defense. The addition of the large bulged radar dome under the fuselage did little for the Gannet’s looks, but it did give the Royal Navy radar coverage of their fleet out to 200 miles from the aircraft. The other main versions of the Gannet were a trainer and a transport for moving people and cargo to a carrier at sea. The Gannet served with the Royal Navy until 1978 when the British decommissioned their last true aircraft carrier.

Douglas EA-1F Skyraider

The design of the Douglas Skyraider dates to 1943 when the U.S. Navy requested a single seat aircraft capable of acting as both a dive-bomber and a torpedo bomber. The prototype first flew in March 1945. The design was very well received during testing and the first aircraft entered service in 1946 as the AD-1. The Skyraider proved to be a very adaptable design and production of eight major models and thirty-seven variants continued until 1957 with 3,180 built. The basic AD-5 model appeared in 1950 as a two seat anti-submarine aircraft with a wider and slightly longer fuselage. The larger fuselage allowed more extensive modification into a four seat electronic countermeasures aircraft designated AD-5Q. In 1962, these aircraft were re-designated as EA-1F. A small number of them remained in service as late as 1979.

Originally designed as a strategic nuclear bomber the A-3 proved itself to be very adaptable to other uses and remained in service long after the Navy had lost its role in strategic bombing. Designing for the Skywarrior began in 1948 and the first prototype flew in 1952. In addition to the bomber version the Navy used electronic warfare and aerial tanker versions of the Skywarrior into the 1970s and a few remained in test programs as late as the 1990s.

This was the he last tri-motor propeller driven aircraft to see service in the U.S. military. By the time the C-125 was ready for production the jobs it had been intended to do were being done by helicopters and the C-123. The Air Force decided that it had no flying job for the few C-125s that were built. Most, like this one, went directly from the factory to technical schools for use as non-flying ground trainers. After brief military careers most of the 23 C-125s built were sold to a Florida company that then resold them to airlines in Latin America. Most were out of service by the mid-1960s. As of 2002 only two Raiders are known to exist, both in museums in the United States.
