Last remains of Lightship No. XII build 1879. From 1880 to 1920 it was in position in 3 places in Kattegat.

From then on it had various owners. The last owner was a stock brooker. His son held a party with friends on board who obviously were very noisy. The neighbours got irritated of the noise from the ship so they cutted off the electricity.

What they didn't know with their act was they also cutted the electricity to the bilge pumps so the ship began to take in water. Copenhagen firebrigade with divers were called who came with pumps and tried also to stop holes in the ship but had no luck. Then the ship sank.

The ship is built at N. F. Hansens shipyard in Odense 1895 and was classified at Lappegrunden north of Elsinore. From 1921 until 1972 was the majority of the time designated by Gedser Rev. The lightship was in 1921 equipped with a motor - a 3-cylindret Vølund ignited the main engines of 135 hp. Outfitting is from just after the war and is untouched by time.

Lightship XVII was donation from AP Møllers Fund for the National Museum in 1972. The Helwick LV14 was last stationed off Rhossili, on the Gower Peninsula, in South Wales. The beam from the Light tower could be seen from 25 miles away and warned sailors of the Helwick Swatch, a treacherous sand bank.

Weighing 550 tons with an overall length of 137 feet, the Helwick was built to withstand all the might of the sea. It took eleven people to crew the vessel with seven on board at any one time. In 1975 landing platforms were added so that the crews could be changed by helicopter.

A Lightship has no propulsion of its own because most of its life is at anchor; Helwick LV14 was towed by the tender THV Winston Churchill from the Swansea Depot.

In 1988 the churches in Cardiff were called together by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation to discuss the role of Christianity in the bay area. The churches were seen as playing an important part in the community and should be involved at the very hub of the new developments. To this end Helwick LV14 was purchased and restoration begun to create a floating Christian Centre.]]>

The New Bedford Lightship currently is berthed at the Commonwealth Electric Pier, adjacent to Global’s Marine Terminal. A rare piece of maritime history, the lightship was built in 1930 and is one of 13 U.S. lightships left in the world. Lightships served as beacons in areas where building a lighthouse was either impossible or impractical. New Bedford Lightship, also known as LV #114/WAL-536, served in Atlantic waters along the East Coast until the Coast Guard decommissioned it in 1971. The ship was brought to New Bedford in 1975 and renamed. In 1980, the city-owned vessel was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lightship Nantucket was the name given to the lightvessel which marked the hazardous Nantucket Shoals in Massachusetts. Several ships have been commissioned and served at the Nantucket Shoals lightship station and have been called Nantucket. It was common for a lightship to be reassigned and then "renamed" and identified by its new station.

The Nantucket station was the most significant lightship station for transatlantic voyages in the coastal waters of the United States. Established in 1854, the station marked the limits of the dangerous Nantucket Shoals and the eastern end of the Ambrose Channel, the main deepwater shipping channel into New York Harbor. She was the last lightship seen by vessels departing the United States, as well as the first beacon seen on approach.]]>

LV 79 / WAL 506 Barnegat Lightship, Built for the USLHS in 1904 and served at Barnegat Station from 1927 - 1942 and from 1945 – 1967. This Lightship is endangered, and is sitting in the mud at a private location in Camden, NJ. Pumps run during high tides to keep water out and its hull is fragile . The Lightship is intact, and has all its equipment. Its future is uncertain.

The Columbia Lightship marked the entrance to the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean. Several vessels would be known as "Columbia". LV #50 was the first Columbia Lighthouse and was stationed at the mouth of the river in 1892. This became the first lightship actively deployed on the West Coast. It served until 1909, when it was replaced by LV #88. LV #88 served the Columbia for 30 years until 1939 when it was replaced by a similar ship called LV #93. LV #93 served until 1951 when WLV604 took over.

WLV 604 would be the last vessel known as the Columbia. The ship was made of steel, and was 128 feet long, 30 feet wide, and draft of 11 feet. The ship was powered by a diesel engine made by Atlas Imperial. The lighting system on the WLV 604 was a 375mm lens visible for up to 13 miles. Fog warning was provided by two diaphone signals on either side of the ship. The lightship was decommissioned in 1979 and replaced by a lighted navigational buoy (LNB). The LNB was eventually retied as well.

The Columbia Lighthouse was the first lighthsip to serve on the west coast, and the last one to be decommissioned on the west coast. WLV 604 is open to the public at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon.]]>

Lightship 83, now called Swiftsure, was built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service as the Blunts Reef, California lightship. She is the oldest surviving example of an America lightship with its original marine steam engine. She weathered severe storms and heavy damage from ramming by a steam schooner during her first six years of service. She later rescued 155 survivors from a stranded coastal steamer. Sails were used to help keep her on station in the early years. Replaced at Blunts Reef in 1930, she became the San Francisco lightship.

Swiftsure came under Coast Guard jurisdiction in 1939. In addition to her service at the entrance to San Francisco Bay until 1951, she took station at various times at the Columbia River bar, Umatilla Reef and the Swiftsure Bank; at the latter marking the approach to Puget Sound. She was manned by a Coast Guard crew in 1942, serving in the Navy as a patrol and guard boat at the entrance to San Francisco Bay until the end of the war. Swiftsure was decommissioned in 1960, after 56 years of continuous duty, and purchased by Northwest Seaport in 1969. She is open for visiting to limited portions of the ship while restoration continues.

Lightship Swiftsure is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.]]>

Lightship Ambrose

The Ambrose Lightship (# 87) established in 1907 served the captains of New York Harbor for many years. She was decommissioned in 1968 and donated to the Seaport, which has preserved her as a museum. Lightships were used in the channel because the construction of a lighthouse would have been too dangerous in the deep turbulent waters or sandy bottoms.

The Ambrose got her name from the Ambrose Channel, which marks the southern entrance to the harbor. She proudly served at this station until 1932, when a newer ship replaced her, but her service was not over. For a period, she served as a Relief ship off Sandy Hook and during the Second World War, the Ambrose spent her time as an Examination ship at Fort Hancock, New Jersey.

The Ambrose Light Station replaced the lightships in 1967. The US Coast Guard staffed this Texas type light platform until they automated the light in 1988.]]>

The Lightship Overfalls was the last lightship built by the United States Lighthouse Service. It was commissioned as the LV (light vessel) 118 in 1938 and was considered at that time to be "state of the art" in lightship design.

Overfalls had a distinguished career before arriving in Lewes, DE. Between 1938 and 1972 it was stationed at three different lightship stations: first, at Cornfield Point off the coast of Connecticut, then at the Cross Rip Station off the coast of Massachusetts, and finally the Boston Station just off Cape Cod. After suffering major structural damage in a December, 1970 storm, the Overfalls was taken out of service in 1971, and decommissioned in 1972.

Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of a total of 179 built from 1820 to 1952. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.]]>

Built in 1951 at Curtis Bay, MD by the USCG Yard for $500,000, Lightship 612 was the last ship to serve the Nantucket Shoals station and was also the last US lightship in commission. In 1975 Lightship Ambrose, the Nantucket's sister ship was renamed Lightship Nantucket II and the two ships spelled one another, relieving each other approximately every 21 days. In December 1983 the Lightship 613 was sold to the New England Historic Seaport to become a musuem ship in Boston and Lightship 612 was reassigned to cutter duty.

Finally, after being decommissioned on March 29, 1985 Lightship 612 was sold to the Boston Educational Marine Exchange and has since passed through a number of owners. As of 2006, she is privately owned and has been converted to a luxury yacht which is berthed in Boston and is for sale.]]>

Lightship "Frying Pan" is listed on both the New York State and Federal Registers of Historic Places, as it is one of 13 lightships remaining from more than 100 built. The US Coast Guard used lightships as floating lighthouses to guard other ships from running aground on shoals, or submerged rocks, that were too far from land to be served by a lighthouse on shore. Many were also used to mark the entrances to harbors. Lightship 116 - now called Chesapeake - was built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1930. For the next 40 years, she served as a floating lighthouse, landfall and communications platform. Her first duty station was Fenwick Island, Delaware. In 1933, she first assumed the name Chesapeake, from her new position off the coast of Virginia at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. She was redesignated WAL 538 in 1939, when the Lighthouse Service was absorbed by the U.S. Coast Guard.

In 1942, shortly after the U.S. entered World War II, Chesapeake was given light armament, painted battleship gray and moved to Sandwich, Massachusetts to serve as an Examination Vessel. After the war, she returned to the Chesapeake station. She ended her service at the Delaware Bay station in 1970.

After retirement, she was transferred to the National Park Service, and began a new career as a seagoing environmental center in Washington, D.C. In 1981, as Chesapeake, she joined the Baltimore Maritime Museum's collection of historic ships.

Lightship 605 - now called Relief - is one of six all-welded lightships constructed for the U.S. Coast Guard. She served for 25 years as a floating lighthouse, landfall and communications platform. Her first duty station was as Overfalls lightship station off Delaware. In 1959, she was transferred to the Blunts (reef) station off Cape Mendocino, California. In 1969, she became Relief, relieving all West Coast lightships when they left station for overhaul. She was decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1975, and given to the City of Olympia, Washington.

Relief was purchased from the City of Olympia by Mr. Alan Hosking of Woodside, California in 1979. He donated her to the U.S. Lighthouse Society in December 1986. For 17 years, volunteers of the Society worked to restore the vessel. She was opened to the public as a floating museum in October 2002.]]>
