Vital Alsar Ramirez was born on August 7, 1933, in "Calle Alta" in Santander, Cantabria, Spain.

His entire life has been linked to nature and the sea. While in the military in Morocco, he read a book about the Kon-Tiki, the expedition that Thor Heyerdahl conducted on a raft on the Pacific. Reading this account led to his interest in duplicating the feat.

Ecuador to Australia, La Balsa

He made a second attempt in 1970 on a new raft, La Balsa. This expedition was successful, and ended at the Australian port of Mooloolaba. The trip lasted 161 days and covered 8565 miles. The Kula Manu was originally built in 1946 in Wilmington, Delaware by Lancaster Iron Works. It was converted to a four-masted barkentine passenger vessel under Subchapter H in 1980. She is U.S. Coast Guard certified for 1,000 passengers and a crew of up to 60 for a total of 1,060 persons. She has been primarily operating for dinner cruises every evening off WaikikiBeach with occasional special daytime charters. Her marine crew, is approximately 14 persons.

The vessel is all steel-welded with a long bow sprit and has four steel masts that carry small sails, essentially for visual and aesthetic purposes. There are four decks. The vessel is powered by twin 1,000 hp Superior engines.]]>

The KZ1 yacht was the 1988 America's Cup challenger from New Zealand.

KZ1, designed by Bruce Farr, was skippered by David Barnes along with a crew of 40 from the Mercury Bay Boating Club in Whitianga. The KZ1 was given the nickname of the Big Boat or Big Beauty by financial backer, Sir Michael Fay. Many saw the size and wide deck gave the boat a nick-name of The aircraft carrier.

KZ1 prompted American skipper Dennis Conner to build a catamaran Stars & Stripes (US-1). Conner won the challenge, but most of the battle was fought in court. The Royal Clipper is the first fully rigged square-rigged ship with five masts since the Preussen, launched in 1902, one of the last sail powered bulk cargo ship. The Preussen was then the largest and fastest sailing vessel ever built.

The Royal Clipper Today, the Royal Clipper approximates the Preussen in all major measurements, but is optimised for passenger comfort rather than cargo carrying, and the overall look of the new vessel is based upon the former German sailing ship.

At 133.8 meters length the Royal Clipper is by far the largest true sail vessel afloat anywhere today. She accommodates 228 passengers and 105 crewmembers, and has three swimming pools, a stern marina platform, a spa and a three deck combined atrium and dining room.]]>

The Barque Viking was built in 1907 by Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was originally built to be used as a training ship for sailors for the rapidly growing Danish merchant fleet. At that time, seaworthiness and cargo capacity were given top priority. One day in July of 1909 the captain recorded in the ship's log a speed record, 15.5 knots (28.7 km/h) while carrying a full cargo of wheat from Australia. There are only ten four-masted barques in existence and only five of these still sail.
She came permanently to Gothenburg/Göteborg, Sweden in 1950 as a home for different shipping institutions and later as a school of seamanship. Today she is moored in the Göteborg guest harbour as hotel Barken Viking. The owner is Liseberg amusement park.

The Star of India is the world's oldest active ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in the Isle of Man in 1863. Iron ships were experiments of sorts then, with most vessels still being built of wood. Within five months of laying her keel, the ship was launched into her element. She bore the name Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music.

Euterpe was a full-rigged ship and would remain so until 1901, when the Alaska Packers Association rigged her down to a barque, her present rig. She began her sailing life with two near-disastrous voyages to India. On her first trip she suffered a collision and a mutiny. On her second trip, a cyclone caught Euterpe in the Bay of Bengal, and with her topmasts cut away, she barely made port. Shortly afterward, her first captain died on board and was buried at sea.

After such a hard luck beginning, Euterpe settled down and made four more voyages to India as a cargo ship. In 1871 she was purchased by the Shaw Savill line of London and embarked on a quarter century of hauling emigrants to New Zealand, sometimes also touching Australia, California and Chile. She made 21 circumnavigations in this service, some of them lasting up to a year. It was rugged voyaging, with the little iron ship battling through terrific gales, "labouring and rolling in a most distressing manner," according to her log.]]>

The ship used in the academy award winning film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World found a permanent home at the Maritime Museum of San Diego in 2004. The HMS Surprise is a magnificent replica of an 18th century Royal Navy frigate.

HMS. Surprise is a 179-foot full rigged ship. Her designers and builders made a painstaking effort to recreate a 24 gun frigate of Great Britan's Nelson era Royal Navy. The result is a replica vessel unmatched in its authenticity and attention to detail. Originally christened H.M.S. Rose when she was launched in 1970, she served as a sail training vessel operating out of several East coast ports for over 30 years. the ship underwent extensive modifications for the production of the film in 2002. The Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). She was built in Amsterdam in 1628, and had 24 cast-iron cannons. The Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia.
A replica of the Batavia was built at the Bataviawerf in Lelystad in the Netherlands. The project lasted from 1985 to 7 April 1995, and was conducted as an employment project for young people under master-shipbuilder Willem Vos. The shipyard is currently reconstructing another 17th century ship, which, in contrast to the merchant ship Batavia, the new replica is a man-of-war, the Zeven Provinciën; Michiel de Ruyters' flagship.

This Batavia replica was built with traditional materials, such as oak and hemp and using the tools and methods of the time of construction of the original ship. For the design, good use was made of the remains of the original ship in Fremantle (and of the Vasa in Stockholm) as well as historical sources, like 17th century building descriptions (actual building plans were not made at the time) and prints and paintings by artists (who at the time generally painted fairly true to nature) of similar ships.

On 25 September 1999, the new Batavia was transported to Australia by barge and moored at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney. In 2000, the Batavia was the flagship for the Dutch Olympic Team during the 2000 Olympic Games.

On 12 June 2001, the ship returned to Bataviawerf in Lelystad and is currently on display to visitors.]]>

The Maltese Falcon is a clipper sailing luxury yacht owned by American centimillionaire Tom Perkins. It is the largest privately-owned sailing yacht in the world at 88 metres (289.1 feet). Ken Freivokh Design were the appointed designers (after an invention from the German engineer Wilhelm Prölss) for Maltese Falcon, the world's largest privately owned sailing yacht. The yacht was constructed in Tuzla, Turkey by the Italian firm Perini Navi. The Falcon was the third yacht built by this firm for Perkins.

The luxury yacht is currently registered in George Town, Cayman Islands; though it will shortly be registered in Valletta, Malta as Grand Harbour will be its homeport for the next 25 years. It completed its trial sail in the Marmara to the Bosphorus strait on 12 June 2006 and made its maiden voyage from Turkey to Italy via Malta in July 2006. S/Y ‘Maltese Falcon’ was be available for select yacht charters beginning in the summer of 2006 and charters out for between EUR€ 325000.00-335000.00 per week plus expenses.

She sports fifteen square sails (five per mast) which only take 6 minutes to open. The three carbonfibre masts, manufactured and assembled by a company financed by Perkins at the Yildiz Gemi yard in Tuzla, 50 miles south of Istanbul, Turkey, under the supervision of the English company Insensys are free-standing and rotating, an absolute world-first for an application of this size and complexity. The yacht is easily controlled and has been seen to sail off her anchor and away from berths within harbors. The yacht's sophisticated computer detects parameters such as wind speed automatically and displays key data, however Perkins does not permit the computer to actually sail the yacht. An operator must always activate the controls, never-the-less it is possible for a single person to pilot the yacht.

She also has two 1800 horse-power Deutz engines running at 1800 rpm with a top speed of 20 knots with minimal wave-making and virtually no vibration with a smooth and non-turbulent wake. The engines make almost no noise, described as being quieter than the air-conditioning.

The yacht has a permanent crew of 18 to maintain the technical aspects including the rig and to operate the onboard "hotel", which can accommodate twelve guests plus four guest staff.]]>

The Nippon Maru Ⅱ was built in 1984, replacing the former Nippon Maru which was engaged in training of merchant marine cadets for over half a century.

The former Nippon Maru was built in 1930, brought up 11,425 trainees over a little more than 54 years to retirement, and completed about 1,830,000km voyage.

Although the former Nippon Maru had continued the brilliant voyage participating in ceremony of the 200th U.S. founding of the country anniversary (1976) etc., after 1974 with superannuation, it reduced the scale of ocean navigation and was continuing the temporary voyage.

1981, The investigation about construction of The Nippon Maru Ⅱ was started and the construction basic concept was summarized.

The fixed plans of construction was as follows.

* Fundamental engineering education etc. was taken into consideration based on The former Nippon Maru and The other sailing ship Kaiwo Maru.
* In consideration of years of operation, it had a fine sight as it was strong, and it considers as a dignified thing.
* It took into consideration enough also about hull intensity, restitutive force, a trim, sound isolation, vibration-proof, and heat-proof.
* While being equipped fully with educational equipment required for training adaptability, discipline, a sense of cooperation, and international mindeness that were indispensable elements for ship's officers.
* It took into consideration of a comfortable environment and living space on the ship in which people enable to live healthfully as much as possible.

1982, The budget about construction of The Nippon Maru Ⅱ was accepted, and it became progress of construction. The schedule from planning to complete the construction was as follows.

* 11th APR. 1983 :Keel lay at Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.
* 16th SEPT. 1983 :Block loading was started..
* 14th DEC. 1983 : The first mast (a jigger mast, mast at the tail end) was carried.
* 15th FEB. 1984 : Launching ceremony was celebrated in the presence of the Crown Prince and Princess.
* 16th SEPT. 1984 : Construction was completed and it was handed over. The first trainee was accepted and the maiden voyage was started.

The Jylland is the world's last screw-propelled steam frigate. During the Second War of Schleswig in 1864, it won a battle against the Austrian-Prussian fleet in the Battle of Heligoland. In Danish, the ship is known as simply Fregatten Jylland, although several ships have used this name.

The ship has been restored and is currently on display in the town of Ebeltoft, Denmark. It is advertised as one of the world's largest wooden ships. (from Wikipedia)]]>

The Black Pearl was built in Pukavik, Sweden in 1909 and is one of the last surviving wooden trading schooners. Her long and chequered history has spanned two world wars, the development of technology and huge changes in the sea-faring world.

The Black Pearl, originally called the Black Opal, has a hull constructed from two layers of thick seasoned oak and three stout ninety-foot masts, which rise from her deck. At one hundred and fifty feet in length she was made to penetrate the Baltic ice floes in the cold winters and survive the strong Scandinavian winds. Made for trading missions the Black Pearl carried loads of nearly four hundred tonnes, usually grain, coal and wood, to remote areas of Norway and Sweden.

Fifty years after her first voyage, The Black Pearl was sailed to Ramsgate to be upgraded. Re-construction work was done on her masts and interior and she was given nine thousand square feet of new canvas.

On Christmas Eve, 1973 she set sail for Australia to start a new life as a luxury passenger vessel. Her voyage to the southern hemisphere took her to Lisbon, Martinique, the Virgin Islands and the Galapagos before her arrival in Melbourne.

However the Black Pearl was not destined to remain in the South Pacific for long, for after only a few holiday cruises, she developed weevel worm in her hull and was sent back to the United Kingdom for repairs. She never made it past the Mediterranean. After a fire broke out in the engine room as she traveled through the Suez Canal, she was limped into Marsamxett harbour in Malta, where she sank to the seabed seventy feet below.

In 1979, the schooner was refloated by local enthusiasts and restored to her former glory. She then played a prominent part in the film ‘Popeye’ which was made in Malta, directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams.

The Black Pearl’s adventures didn’t end there. She sank once again in a storm in 1981 and was brought back to the surface for the final time to the Ta’ Xbiex seafront, where she was perched on the quayside overlooking the bastions of Valletta and the ruins of Manoel Island. For six years volunteers and boat-lovers helped restore the beautiful boat to her former magnificence. She was turned into a restaurant and bar in 1987.

Today the Black Pearl is still elegantly towering over surrounding boats in the marina. Now the home of Mare Nostrum, a high quality restaurant serving a variety of fresh dishes and excellent wines, the Black Pearl is a unique attraction on the Maltese islands. ]]>

The Gorch Fock I (ex Tovarishch, ex Gorch Fock) is a German three-mast barque. Originally built as a school ship for the German Reichsmarine in 1933, she was taken as war reparation by the USSR after World War II. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the ship sailed under the Ukrainian flag from 1992 to 1993. In 1995, she was transferred to Newcastle-upon-Tyne for repairs, which however, somehow never even began. In 1999, she was moved to Wilhelmshaven and finally acquired by private sponsors and transferred to her original home port Stralsund, Germany, where she was re-baptized Gorch Fock on November 29, 2003. She is a museum ship today, and although efforts are being made to reactivate her, it is doubtful whether she will sail ever again.

The Gorch Fock served as a training vessel for the German Reichsmarine. During the second World War, she was a stationary office ship in Stralsund, until she was officially reactivated on April 19, 1944. On May 1, 1945, the crew scuttled her in shallow waters off Rügen in an attempt to avoid capture by the Russian troops.

However, the Russians raised and salvaged her in 1947 and restored her from 1948 to 1950. The ship was newly named the Tovarishch ("Comrade" in Russian) in 1951 and put into service as a training vessel again. Her new home port was Odessa. Under the name Tovarishch she participated in many Tall Ships' Races and cruised far and wide on the seven seas. She made a voyage around the world in 1957 and won the Operation Sail race twice, in 1974 and 1976.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Tovarishch sailed under the Ukrainian flag (home port was then Cherson) until 1993, when she was deactivated due to a lack of funds. In 1995, she sailed for the last time from Cherson to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where private sponsors wanted to have her repaired. This enterprise failed due to the high costs, and in 1999, the ship was transported to Wilhelmshaven in Germany, where she stayed in dock for four years until she finally was transferred to Stralsund, Germany in 2003. On November 29, 2003 the ship was re-baptized Gorch Fock. Currently, she serves as a museum ship.]]>

The SEUTE DEERN is one of the last surviving historic wooden cargo sailing vessels, not only in Germany, but in all of Europe. It is the flagship and outstanding attraction of the museum harbour of the German Maritime Museum (DSM) and has become the trademark of Bremerhaven. As a museum ship and floating restaurant, the windjammer has been berthed in the Old Harbour – the oldest harbour of Bremerhaven and the site of the city's origin – since 1966. The barque SEUTE DEERN was the inaugural object of Germany's first open-air maritime museum, from which the DSM developed. Furthermore, the wooden sailing ship represents the local shipbuilding tradition, within whose framework over 250 deep-water sailing vessels were built – initially of wood, later of steel – in the shipyards on the Geeste, particularly Rickmers and Tecklenborg. Finally, the present-day flagship of the DSM demonstrates the international character of sailship construction and navigation.
Originally the four-masted schooner ELIZABETH BANDI, this ship was built in 1919 in the American gulf port near the mouth of the Mississippi for the transport of wood. From 1931 she sailed under Finnish flag until being acquired by the Hamburg shipowner John T. Essberger in 1938. In 1939, Essberger had the schooner altered to a barque by the Hamburg shipyard Blohm & Voss; now she was to serve as a cargo-carrying training ship for junior nautical officers. By 1944 she had made many a journey on the Baltic Sea and the end of the war found her berthed in her winter quarters in Lübeck. Following alterations carried out in Travemünde (1946-47) the SEUTE DEERN operated until 1954 as a hotel ship in Hamburg. Subsequently, until 1964, she rode at anchor under Dutch flag in Delfzijl, now as the youth hostel ship PIETER A. KOERTS. Following a short stay in Emden, the ship reached Bremerhaven. The SEUTE DEERN has been at her present berth in the museum harbour in front of the main building of the DSM since 1975.
Due to severe damages to the main deck and hull, the floating cultural monument is being restored in 2001-2002. The DSM is undertaking every effort to preserve for posterity one of the last existing wooden cargo sailing ships in Europe as a living testimony to our maritime cultural heritage.

The Stad Amsterdam (literally: City Amsterdam) is a three-mast clipper that was built in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2000 at the Damen Oranjewerf.

The ship was designed by Gerard Dijkstra who modelled her after the mid-19th century frigate Amsterdam, but she is not a replica. A major difference is that the hull is made of steel. The owners call the ship a "modern extreme clipper in historical perspective", meaning that the construction method is a combination of the best qualities of clippers of the past, outfitted and built with modern techniques but with a classic 'look and feel'. This makes her a very fast ship, with 15 knots being a normal speed. She won the 2001 Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race.

Continental Sloop Providence, based on the East Coast, in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. This 110 foot sloop is a recreation of a very historic Revolutionary War naval vessel. Originally known as the Katy and launched in the 1760's, she sailed the Eastern seaboard and the Caribbean as an armed merchant ship. It is believed that she may even have had experience as a whaler and perhaps even a privateer before the war began.

In June of 1775, she became the flagship of the navy of Rhode Island. When she became a part of the American Navy later that year, she was renamed the Providence and became the first command of John Paul Jones. In her career, she won over 40 naval battles – the most successful of all American ships in the war. Yet she met her end in 1779 when she was scuttled and burned by her crew to avoid capture by the British in the Penobscot River near Bucksport, Maine.

The Providence was one of several ships that sailed to the Caribbean for appearances in Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man's Chest. One of her crew, Richard "Rusty" Rice has a great diary online offering some views of her during the filming as well as a log her voyage there and back. From the ships web pages:

Wreck of the British three masted wooden barque Jhelum built in Liverpool in 1849, she sailed mostly between Europe and South America. In August 1870 Jhelum arrived in Stanley harbour, distressed and leaking with a badly stored cargo of guano. Her crew had so little faith in the ship's ability to complete her voyage that they refused to put to sea in her again and in September Jhelum was pronounced unseaworthy. The ship was sold locally to Dean & Co. and scuttled to serve as a jetty head and workshop area. Jhelum is believed to be the last surviving vessel of her kind and is an important feature of the Stanley shoreline, but age and erosion combined with the hidden damage caused by the marine borers, gribble and teredo, has left the hulk in a poor condition. The Museum & National Trust is trying to raise funds for conservation work without which the hulk cannot be expected to survive for many more years. ]]>

This Iron ship was built in Sunderland, England in 1879. She came to grief of Cape Horn in 1913 in severe gales losing cargo and men overboard. Unfortunately she also hit a rock on approaching Berkeley Sound, East Falkland and was holed. Condemned as unfit for repair she was sold to the Falkland Islands Company and used as a warehouse moored at the east jetty in Stanley. Eventually she broke free from her moorings in 1936 and drifted to her current position at Whale Bone Cove. Picture here.]]>

City of Adelaide, one of the few surviving clipper ships, was built in 1864 to carry both passengers and cargo between Great Britain and Australia. In 1893 she was bought to serve as a floating hospital in Southampton and from 1923 to 1956 she was used as a Royal Naval Reserve drill ship at Greenock. There were plans to restore her but in February 2006 it was announced that as the hull was in worse condition than anticipated, an application would be put forward for recorded deconstruction.]]>
