The Kwinana district derives its name from the Steamship Kwinana. The Kwinana was originally the S.S. Darius and was bought in 1912 by the State Government. At first it was decided to rename her Kimerly but there were too many ships of this name in Lloys' Register of Shipping.

Kwinana was finally chosen, the name being taken from a sub-division in the Kimberly district. It is aboriginal for Pretty Maiden.

On Christmas Day, 1920, the Kwinana was damaged by a fire at Canarvon. A year later she was brought to Fremantle, where she was stripped and towed to a mooring at Careening Bay, Garden Island. During a westerly gale in 1922, a mooring shackle was parted and the vessel drifted across Cockburn Sound to where she lies today.

The rusting hulk of the Kwinana ship was cut down to low water level, and the centre was filled with limestone to form a platform as part of the jetty at Kwinana.

A cruise ship originally designed for and built by Schichau Unterweser, Germany in 1974. Originally named BEWA Discoverer, the ship was completed in Bremerhaven, Germany

On April 30, 2000 at 4:00 pm local time (0500 GMT) Sunday, The ship struck a large uncharted rock or reef on the Sandfly Passage, Solomon Islands. A distress signal was sent out by the captain and was received by Solomon Islands capital Honiara. A passenger ferry was dispatched to the ship where all passenger were then transported to safety. The captain then brought the ship into Roderick Bay after the ship began to list 20 degrees and grounded the ship to avoid sinking. After underwater surveying of the ship, the World Discoverer was declared a "Constructive Loss". The ship has remained in Roderick Bay ever since. There are no reports of any oil or petroleum or other pollutant spills were reported as a result of the impact.

The World Discoverer still sits in Roderick Bay on Nggela Island with a 46 degree list. The closest salvage companies to try and salvage the ship station out of Australia found the ship ransacked by the locals and other factions. The Solomon Islands was undergoing civil war and was boarded with equipment taken from the ship. Further tidal activity also damaged the ship even more.

One of two submarine minelaying vessels brought out from England in 1903, the Janie Seddon was based in Wellington and its twin, the Lady Roberts was based in Auckland. She was used in port during both world wars and was the Examination Vessel during WWII.

About 1936 Janie Seddon was purchased by Talleys Fisheries as their first vessel. Last remains of Lightship No. XII build 1879. From 1880 to 1920 it was in position in 3 places in Kattegat.

From then on it had various owners. The last owner was a stock brooker. His son held a party with friends on board who obviously were very noisy. The neighbours got irritated of the noise from the ship so they cutted off the electricity.

What they didn't know with their act was they also cutted the electricity to the bilge pumps so the ship began to take in water. Copenhagen firebrigade with divers were called who came with pumps and tried also to stop holes in the ship but had no luck. Then the ship sank.

HMS Calypso was a Calypso-class corvette launched in 1883, renamed HMS Briton to serve as a training ship for the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve. She was sold in 1922, and used as a storage hulk. She and her sister ship Calliope were the last two corvettes to be powered by steam and sail.

Some sources state that she is berthed at Lewisporte, Newfoundland and Labrador awaiting restoration and others that she was burned for salvage near Lewisporte. From looks of her it seems that latter was the case. She the larger one of the two wrecks in the map.]]>

The most commonly accepted story regarding the wreck of the Panagiotis maintains that she spent the later part of her life as a smuggler ship. In 1980 (during a time of record population lows on the island of Zakynthos), Panagiotis was making her way from Turkey with a freight of contraband cigarettes (for the Italian Mafia, as some versions of the story assert). The crew was suspected by authorities, and so the Panagiotis was pursued by the Greek Navy. Encountering stormy weather, she ran aground in a shallow cove to the north of Porto Vromi, where the crew abandoned ship to evade the pursuing Navy. To this day, she remains at the site which is now called "Navagio" for the Greek "shipwreck."

The ship was never completed as a destroyer. Construction was stopped in 1963 and the ship was completed as a floating power plant in 1969. It was used until 1982 when it was partly scrapped. The original name of the Mediterranean Sky was City of York when it was built in 1952 in Newcastle, England. The Cruise liner departed London in November 1953, and maintained its service until sold to Michael A. Karageorgis, Piraeus in 1971, when she became the Mediterranean Sky. Her last voyage was in August 1996, when she sailed from Brindisi to Patras.

Due to the companies’ financial situation, the Mediterranean Sky was arrested in 1997, whilst in Patras. She remained in Patras until 1999, when she was towed to Eleusis, and laid up and was virtually abandoned. Then, in late November, 2002, she began to take on water and began to list.

In order to stop her sinking, she was towed to shallow water and was grounded. In January 2003, Mediterranean Sky keeled over on her side in Eleusus Bay. She remains there awaiting her fate.]]>

The cargo vessel Plassey was shipwrecked off Inis Oírr in the 1960s, and has since been thrown above high tide mark at Carraig na Finise on the island by strong Atlantic waves. The USAS American Mariner was a U.S. Army research vessel from January 1959 to 30 September 1963. She was originally assigned to DAMP Project by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) to attempt to collect radar signature data on incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles in the Caribbean, the South Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. Her initial operations involved providing radar track on the Atlas missile, which was under development at the time. Subsequently, she provided track on other types of missiles as they proceeded through their development and operational stages.]]>

This 131 feet long wooden schooner sank in a storm on April 9, 1894. It was made of white oak in 1876 in nearby Manitowoc. It's remains were discovered in 1990 during preparations for building a new marina. Donald Crowhurst (1932–1969) was a British businessman and amateur sailor who died while competing in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a single-handed, round-the-world yacht race. Crowhurst had entered the race in hopes of winning a cash prize from the Sunday Times to aid his failing business. Instead, he encountered difficulty early in the voyage, and secretly abandoned the race while reporting false positions, in an attempt to appear to complete a circumnavigation without actually circling the world. Evidence found after his disappearance indicates that this attempt ended in insanity and suicide.
The boat still lies in the dunes on the southwest shore of Cayman Brac.

Built in 1963 by a private citizen to explore the Andria Doria wreck. Sunk at launching...

"The crane engineer lowered the sub completely into Coney Island Creek, disregarding Bianco's instructions. Bianco had removed the ballast from one side of the sub to save money, since the cost of launch was calculated by the pound, and the engineer was told to lower it only partly into the creek. Like the ocean liner it was supposed to help salvage, the Yellow Submarine listed severely in the water and couldn't be launched. Biano later refilled the ballast and tethered the sub, but his backers' enthusiasm waned, and he could never return to the project. The Sygna was a 53,000 tonne Norwegian bulk carrier and now shipwreck on Stockton Beach in the Port Stephens LGA in New South Wales, Australia. The ship ran aground during a major storm on 26 May 1974 and the wreck has become an icon and landmark for the local area.

The Water Nymph was built for owners Clark and Dunn by a Mr Reay in the Walker area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (England) in 1840.

On 26 May the Times reported that the snow Water Nymph was leaky and towed into Swinemünde by the steamer Sedan after a collision at sea with the Russian steamer Alexandra. USS Thompson (DD-305), a Clemson-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy named in honor of Richard W. Thompson, never saw action against an enemy.

The keel of the Thompson was laid down on 25 September 1918, at San Francisco, California, by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. She was launched on 15 January 1919.

Under the terms of the 1930 London Naval Treaty limiting naval tonnage and armaments, Thompson was decommissioned on 4 April 1930, struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 22 June 1930; and sold for scrap on 10 June.

Following her sale, she served as a floating restaurant in lower San Francisco Bay during the depression years of the 1930s. In February 1944, the Navy repurchased the ship and partly sank her in the mud flats of San Francisco Bay, south of the San Mateo Bridge, where Army and Navy aircraft carried out bombing runs with dummy bombs.

Portions of the wreck remain above the waterline to this day. She is commonly referred to as the "South Bay Wreck" and many tide tables reference her as a calculation point.]]>
