Bought in 1967 for just £1,700, the 19-acre Dorinish Island was intended to be the site of his holiday retreat, but after falling into disuse, became the permanent campground for a group of 25 hippies. After Lennon’s tragic death in 1980, the island was sold to a neighbour by Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, with the £30,000 proceeds donated to an Irish children’s charity.

The original house, Mount Mapas was built in 1740 by Col. John Mapas, although records show that a building or buildings stood here at a much earlier date. By 1755 it was acquired by a Captain Maunsell who was succeeded by a Colonel Loftus in 1770. The Colonel’s stay was a short one; in 1772 he advertised the castle and its 150 acres for sale despite his short tenure. During his time in residence however, Colonel Loftus and his nephew converted the barren stoney soil to meadow and pasture and cut a road around the hill, his successor was Lord Clonmel who in 1790 improved the estate further spending £ 3,000 in the process, a handsome sum of money in the early19th century.

The name Robert Warren is very much associated with the Castle and it was he who in 1840 enlarged the house and called it Killiney Castle. He also restored and added to the monuments on the hill, repairing the obelisk originally erected by Col. Mapas and donated land and most of the money for the building of Killiney parish church. The land on the hill – once part of the estate - was purchased from his son, Robert Warren Jnr. by Queen Victoria’s jubilee memorial association and subsequently re-named Victoria Hill - as we still know it today.

Its subsequent owners included a Mrs Chippendale Higgan. The trees and shrubs she planted can still be seen today and provide a decorative setting for the castle.

Killiney Castle exchanged hands again with the late Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick taking over the helm in the 1970’s, transforming it into a first class hotel and re-naming it Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel. Today their daughter Eithne Fitzpatrick Scott-Lennon owns the hotel and together with her family continues to guide the way to its continued success for what is proving to be a major contribution to the Dublin hotel scene whilst maintaining the original Castle charm and Irish welcome long associated with the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group.]]>

Decommissioned in 1970 and sold to the Scout Association of Ireland. Moored in Dun Laoghaire Harbour and used as a sea cadet training ship.

Today the Albatross is still in Dublin. She has been moved from the entrance of the Grand Canal to the Pigeon House Harbour, near the power station. Gasworks or Gas holders or Gasometers are large steel tanks which dot the skylines of several European towns. These large containers hold natural gas or town (coal) gas and were mostly built during the late 19th century or early 20th century to supply gas for public lighting and domestic cooking purposes.

Several of these gas holders have become defunct and have been demolished. However exterior of few has been preserved and the space within converted to a more meaningful use.

One such example is the conversion of 60 metres wide Dublin Gasworks into multi storied apartment building. Completed in 2007-08 the building now known as "The Alliance Building" consists of over 200 bedroom apartments which have been built within the frame of the original gasholder. The work has been carried out by developer Liam Carroll under the designs of Architects O’Mahony Pike who has retained the original frame of 1885 and created a stunning nine-storey block of apartments using the circular shape to ensure that all of the apartments have two sided views. The main bedroom and living area are located on the outer perimeter, allowing for great views over the city. The entrance hall and ancillary areas overlook the inner courtyard.]]>

he public swimming baths at Dun Laoghaire originally date from the 1790s but were removed in 1836 when the railway line was built.

In 1843 the new Royal Victorian Baths were built beside Scotman’s Bay. They were extremely popular and Dun Laoghaire became of the best and most popular places in Ireland to bathe. There was a range of bathing options including sea and fresh water, hot and cold baths. Children had their own pond and paddling pools and there was medical baths. These included sulphur, seaweed and Russian and hot sea-water. Moderate charges helped to increase their popularity as well as the fact that they were maintained to a high standard. Service was excellent and included the provision of hot towels if required. There was a tea- room nearby providing refreshments for the bathers. Buses and trains offered a regular means of transport to and from Dun Laoghaire.]]>

About half way along the strand is a Martello tower, part of a system of defences built to warn of an invasion by Napoleon. The Tower was a popular cafe back in the 1960s. An attempt to turn the tower into a restaurant led to the installation of a large window with roller blinds on the seaward side of the tower. The restaurant never opened, leaving the tower with the modified window.

The Merrion Promenade Pier and Baths Co built Sandymount swimming baths in 1883. The baths measured approximately 40 by 40 meters, with a 75-meter pier added in 1884. The pier featured a bandstand half way along it and summer concerts were regularly held there for many years. By 1920, the pier had deteriorated so much that it had to be demolished. These Baths were built in the nineteenth century and much used until late in the last century have become somewhat of an eyesore on the DART Line with dilapidation and graffiti. There is uncertainty surrounding the safety of bathing in sea water baths filled from the Irish Sea, as distinct from swimming in the open sea itself, due to the continued operation of Sellafield in Great Britain.

The Blackrock baths have fallen into dilapidation since their closure and have been sold to developers Treasury Holdings, who have raised the possibility of building high-rise apartments on the site.]]>

Great Blasket Island, off the coast of mainland Ireland, is known in literary circles as the birthplace of some of the most talented Irish writers. But the island holds a fascinating history even for those not interested in literature. Occupied since before recorded history, the island has never been home to more than about 150 people at any one time. The islanders enjoyed life in the tiny fishing community until it was decided in 1953 that the island was no longer safe to live on. Bad weather frequently cut islanders off from the mainland and made it difficult to procure supplies, so the island was abandoned. Bunratty Castle is a large tower house in County Clare, Ireland. It lies in the centre of Bunratty village (Irish: Bun Ráite), by the N18 road between Limerick and Ennis, near Shannon Town and its airport. The name Bunratty, Bun Raite (or possibly, Bun na Raite) in Irish, means the 'bottom' or end of the 'Ratty' river. This river, alongside the castle, flows into the nearby Shannon estuary. The current structure is a large 19th century Martello built upon a large mound.

The Normans built the original fort in the mid-1300s; later a castle was built on the site. This castle formed part of the defences of the town during the siege of Drogheda during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1649.

The estate is noted for its large country estate and vast landscaped gardens.

The house was originally a 13 century castle. The house was extensively rebuilt between 1730 and 1741. The house was gutted by fire in 1974 but recently has been reborn as an exceptional tourist destination.

The gardens at Powerscourt were laid out in two main periods. When the house was rebuilt in the decade after 1731, the surrounding grounds were also remodeled. The design reflected the desire to create a garden which was part of the wider landscape.
