Hi everyone,
I've added a couple additional things related to Achievements.
First of all, you will now be emailed if you get a new Achievement. You can turn this off in your profile page.
Next, there are three new screens:
The Achievements log:

Who owns the Title of King of each country:
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/achievements/countries/
And for Governors:
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/achievements/states/
Also, the current King/Governor is listed on each country/state in the upper-right:
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/countries/AF/
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/states/AK/
Additional achievements that you can get are being worked on now as well.

Several new Achievements have been added (sorry if you were spammed with some emails while they were being calculated). See if you can find them

I think that Journalist would be a good achievement. I like the In The News category.

Is there a way to tell how close you are to the next level of achievement? I sometimes want to focus on a State or topic so I have direction like the Scavenger Hunts but I don't know an easy way of telling which achievement I am a few maps away from reaching.

Yes, under your Home | Achievements | Checklist screen, you should get progress info on the State, Country and several other achievements:
