It appears that Google is preparing for a change in the manner in which the zoom function works; earlier today they added two extra notches on the zoom slider:
Since the extra notches were added to the top of the scale, this appears to be causing some map links that are set/hacked to view at maximum zoom to show the "We are sorry, but we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region. Try zooming out for a broader look." gray tile of death.
I've got my fingers crossed and hope something good comes of it...  In the meanwhile it's probably best to avoid using the hack if you are so prone.
