Hi everyone,

I've made a small change to the URL generated when you select "Show location URL" or "View at google.com" when on a Map's View page.

For the longest time, we've been using "old style" URLs, that look like this:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&t=k&ll=41.8528564,-87.71014930000001&z=20

As you've all seen, Google updated their URL format a while back. They currently use something like this:
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8528564,-87.71014930000001,20z,270h/data=!3m1!1e3

We're now generating URLs in the "new" format. The benefit that this gives us is that we can now include the heading (270h above) in the generated URL.

I've tested this on a few maps and it looks good, but please let me know if you find any issues.

Great change!

However, my first map with this setting isn't working: its zoom level is too low and it is not of the right orientation, yet the URL is in the right format. What might have gone wrong?

Thanks Alephs, I've had a couple reports that it's not always working. Can you share which Map you're talking about?

Hey, nic, mlc1us corrected the map in question. For now we'll have to use a workaround. I'm sure this is just a short-term glitch of some sort. I really put a little bit of effort into making sure that the map had the proper orientation, since it didn't work always in the old system as well, I believe, only to find out that for some reason it didn't work. I don't know why it went wrong.

Here's one

The URL was created by the viewer.

Here is the URL that works: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.1194999,-118.43055042&z=20&t=k&hl=en-US&gl=MX&deg=180

Thanks! That was the perfect example. It looks like Google updated their URL structure again.

Before, for the "new style" URLs, the zoom was in meters (1800y):
http://maps.google.com/maps/@34.1194999,-118.43055042000003,1800y,180h/data=!3m1!1e3

Now, it contains the zoom level directly (20z):
http://maps.google.com/maps/@34.1194999,-118.43055042000003,20z,180h/data=!3m1!1e3

The above map looks better now -- let me know if you find any other bad examples.

Does the new Google Maps URL format work now?

O.K., the new format works. However, the old one is still the one generated in the Submitter, so when you post a map with a particular orientation through it and then click on the thumbnail to see if it matches what you wanted, it doesn't work.

@Alephs thanks for reporting this. I'll work on this shortly.
