I realize that having the original submitted thumbnail already at 500 px probably encourages a better quality image, but it would be very simple to use GD to automagically resize non-conforming images...

Hi jbottero!
Here's a secret: while the page says you need to submit a 500 x 500px image, it will secretly accept a minimum of 400 x 400px image and up-scale.
I found that anything less than 400px scaled up to 500px looks pretty blurry.
