Unplanned scavenger hunt from Google
      07/26/07 07:49 PM (199.190.211.3)

Google updated their imagery (both Google Maps and Google Earth). Instead of listing the new coverage they've released a set of hints:

* Two states known for their majestic peaks have gotten an upgrade.
* I can now see where my favorite maple syrup is made.
* Certain Florida beaches (and 1 mountain) are looking much improved.
* Try counting the warthogs in the Boneyard.
* Peek inside the home of the Brew Crew.
* You can read the Skin's logo painted on their field.
* An historic state capitol building is now in high res.
* This city was named after the Native American name of a nearby mountain, "Tacobet."
* A "far away" city that played a key role in trans-Saharan trade can now be seen close up.
* The town where Jane Austen spent her final years is much clearer.
* The topic of Vincent van Gogh's Cafe Terrace at Night is now bright as day.
* Take a look at "la ville noir," where Cointreau was invented.
* Only a third of this country's land is arable, but you can now view the entire country in high res.
* From 1880 to 1884 this German city was home to the world's tallest building.
* Rockets may be used to disrupt rain clouds over this city next summer.
* This country received an impressive terrain update, you might call it Lord of the Terrain.

Details at the Google Lat Long Blog.

By process of elimination, I *think* this is Dover, Delaware. Definitely now in high res. A while back I worked to submit as many of the state capital buildings as I could find. I did a pretty complete job of submitting all that were in GM high res at that point. Someone else submitted LL/YM for most of the ones not in high res in GM. We have 49 of 50 identified. A quick survey shows all 49 were either already in GM high res, or are still not in high res. The one we have no submission for is Delaware. Looking it up from Wikipedia, I'm able to find that it is indeed now in high res. So I'm pretty sure that this is our answer here. I'll be submitting the Delaware capital building shortly.

Or not. We had the Delaware map, just did not have it named right to be easily findable. Ok. Not sure which one this refers to any more.

Ok. IC. This is, so far, a G-Earth only publish. So it has to be one of the 2-3 ones that, in G-Maps, are still in low res. I'll assemble a list, and someone with access to GE can check them out, or we just wait a week or two for them to forward the new data to GM.

Kentucky
New Hampshire (Technically already in high res, but not very good high res)
Vermont

So there it is. So this is likely then Frankfort, Kentuky or Montpelier, Vermont. Could be Concord, New Hampshire, but I suspect not.

Well, they list Charleston, WV as the possible improved state capital, but that's already nice in high rez in the GM release, so I'm inclined to think not.

Thanks for the heads-up about our Charleston mistake. I had no clue which one it could be, and one of the mods on GEH thought it might be that one. Great idea to compare them to Google Maps.

I'm thinking it's probably Frankfort, Kentucky, but I'm still not sure...

The Arles picture is the same as the old one. They just changed the contrast level.

The topic of Vincent van Gogh's Cafe Terrace at Night is now bright as day : Madrid ???

Only a third of this country's land is arable, but you can now view the entire country in high res : Italy ???

I don't think it's Italy. First, entire Italy is not in high res (just medium res), second, where have you read that a only a third of Italy is arable ?

According to this link, Italy is only 31% arable (land able to grow crops).
