A car taking photos for Microsofts Bing Maps images, similar to Google StreetView, has been spotted in Vancouver, Canada today. When Bing will release images is not clear yet, but we hope it’s soon. Since they are now getting images from Vancouver, my guess is that it will be ahead of the winter Olympics in this city. I believe it will have a different name than “streetview” though.

A quote from the Bing Map Blog:

Quote:

Shortly after we launched Bird’s Eye in Bing Maps (formerly Virtual Earth) a subculture of people starting scouring the imagery for offbeat objects of interest. VirtualGlobetrotting.com was the place where people were invited to report these locations and now we’re using their data in the Roadside Attractions application to show off the most interesting objects found in Bird’s Eye. And, WOW the world has some weird / creative people out there.

All you "weird / creative" people rock... you make the site work. Thank you!

Since trying the bing maps beta version a few weeks ago, I cannot access the normal version of bing maps... it launches the beta version automatically when I go to bing.com/maps.

Therefore, I cannot share any bing maps imagery (offbeat or otherwise), as their beta version does not provide lat/long numbers.

example:
BEV URL...
http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#/p0zow3hd6confw91
switch to 'road' view...
http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#/h3m883kfb7ozbzsv

Why do they feel the need to encode their links?!? I can guarantee we've lost some potential contributors over the years due to the extra work to learn how to create a BEV link with lat/long numbers... and now it is getting downright absurd.

Also, the beta version is unfriendly with existing VGT links. It brings up the proper location, but not always the intended scene. If you click on the map below in beta, you get a scene of nothing but water because it does not point in the correct direction, in this case, west.

There's a way to get out of Bing Maps Beta, I know, because I did it.

Now if I could just remember how I did it I'd tell you... {8^(

The easy way out of Bing Maps Beta can be found by clicking the '?' or 'About beta' button in the lower right corner of the map window.

Thanks, mlc1us. I'll give that a try when I get back home tonight.
