Hi everyone,

Per the recent VirtualGlobetrotting 2012 Survey, I've started working on some of the most-requested improvements to the site.

First up, I've made some changes to the Submission form:

http://virtualglobetrotting.com/submit/
  • After entering the URL, any nearby map's thumbnails will show so you don't need to click on the button to see them
  • The Country, State and Categories fields were changed to a "ComboBox". This is a field where you can type the name and it shows you matches, or use the "down arrow" to browse all of them. This will especially help with Categories if you don't know where it fits and want to search through the category names.
  • The city will now be auto-filled in if we're certain of a match. If not, we'll suggest one or two nearby cities that are possibilities
The Advanced Search page also had its Country, State and Category fields updated to a ComboBox.

Please let us know of any issues.

Hi Nic.

Entering the URL doesn't work for me after your update.

Hi Dania,

What browser are you using?

When you try to enter the URL, what happens? Can you not enter it? Or does it not show the Nearby Maps?

Sorry for the troubles, please let me know.

Thanks Dania. Which version of Internet Explorer are you using? You should be able to check by going into Help | About in the menu.

Thanks Dania. This happens with any URL you're trying to submit? Can you paste a sample URL here?

I'm using IE9 as well and I can't seem to reproduce the issue.

Can you try to hit CTRL-F5 when you're on the Submit page and try pasting the URL again?

Do the other updates on the page work, like using the "ComboBox"s? Can you start typing in the category field and have it auto-suggest items?

Thanks for helping me figure this out!

Before entering this stands in the url field: http://maps.google.com/

When entering a link like this:
http://maps.google.com/?ll=50.942834,6.961679&spn=0.002261,0.004265&t=k&z=18

the upper link stands and and everything is messed up it doesn't disappear as it should. You have to remove it yourself before pasting the actual url for a find.

I don't know why but after the update lately I cant submit finds.

Just to make sure, did you CTRL-F5 on the Submit page? It might help reload the scripts on the page.

If that doesn't work, can you hit F12 to open the IE Development Tools? Open the "Console" tab, and reload the page. Let me know if there are any messages in the Console tab that look like an error.

Thanks!

You're welcome.

By the way. I think the choise of categories have become very slow. Is it possible to make the search as quick as before?

It is a bit slower if you're using the "down arrow" to see the list of all categories. However, the field was updated to allow you to type-and-suggest the category, so you shouldn't need to scroll through the list any more.

Do you like the new type-and-suggest method? Or do you always use the down-arrow?
