I don't mind ads for sites like this, I know servers and bandwidth cost money. At Slashdot, I pay a small "donation" to view ad-free. You could have tiers:

1 - Not logged in -> Full ads
2 - Logged in -> Fewer ads
3 - Logged in + donation -> No ads

Or, ad-free after x number of accepted submissions in a given period.
