Old School All Google Maps All The Time

Five and a half years, and 100,000 submissions after VirtualGlobetrotting opened its doors, we're bringing you back to the roots of internet satellite imagery with a scavenger hunt focused entirely on the company that energized the industry -- Google Maps Satellite imagery.

All valid submissions must be straight Google Maps Satellite imagery. No Bing, Yahoo, Birds Eye, Street View or 45 degree imagery.

Thanks to Kevin (kjfitz) for putting this together, and all of the moderators for helping with the submissions!

The hunt starts on Friday November 26 at 9am PST, and will last 10 days until Sunday December 5 at 9pm PST.

The total points you can find for this hunt is 129 (the biggest we've ever put on!). The user with the most points at the end of the hunt wins!

Looking for your scavenger hunt score? Check your Scavenger Hunt page for details.

Cash Prizes (Amazon.com gift certificates) for the winners are as follows:
  • 1st: $50
  • 2nd: $30
  • 3rd: $20
If there is a tie for first place, the the first person to get the points takes first place, and the others are ordered by the time they finished their last submission.

Good luck!

Category Notes
  • NOTE 1 - Provide relevant More Info link.
  • NOTE 2 - Looking for remains of an Island Culture. Not Japan, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Think Micronesia, Marshall islands, etc. i.e smaller islands and not developed state sized-islands.
  • NOTE 3 - Not looking for a dis-used bridge which is always in a raised state.
  • NOTE 4 - Looking for a manufacturing site where you can see what it is that the company makes because it is too big to make inside. Once one industry has been posted by someone then no more instances of that industry will be accepted. Moderator has the right to decide what is acceptable and what is not. It will be subjective so be patient.
  • NOTE 5 - Looking for 'interesting' infrastructure. Not a non-descript lab that happens to do research inside.
  • NOTE 6 - Once a type of facility has been posted by someone then no more instances of that type will be accepted. Moderator has the right to decide what is acceptable and what is not. It will be subjective so be patient.
  • NOTE 7 - Identify the movie or television series. Not looking for a location that was used in filming. Looking for props and sets.
  • NOTE 8 - The submarine should be real and usable. Not a theme park craft. Acceptable examples are scientific and tourist submarines.
  • NOTE 9 - Some cargo aircraft (B747, C-5) have nose sections that raise to allow loading of over sized cargoes.
  • Note 10 - Not within 10k of a pre-existing post of the same category. i.e. if the category is Greek Ruin then there can not be another post in the VGT database for a Greek Ruin within 10k. Use the Nearby Maps button on the map submission page.
This hunt ran from 2010-11-26 through 2010-12-05.
