'Hawirt' was built c. 1904 on 82 acres for William Richmond Peters by the architect Erick Kensett Rossiter in Mill Neck. Peters was founder and president of Peters, White & Co. which imported chemicals as well as a founder of Columbia Trust Company. Sold to John B. Marsh on 16 acres in spring of 1939. Owned for many years until his death in 1999 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II a great-grandson of William Henry Vanderbilt at one time the "richest man in the world". Alfred Vanderbilt was one of the driving forces behind thoroughbred racing in America for most of the 20th Century. Property still on 16 acre lot.
