Built near the Navy Yard, the 11th Street Bridge was meant to connect both sides of the Anacostia into a residential and mercantile hub for the Federal City. Specifically, the bridge was intended to make housing east of the river available to workers at the Navy Yard. John Wilkes Booth used the 11th Street Bridge to escape Washington, DC, after his assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

Originally built in 1800, the present day bridge was built in 1960.
