This 1/2 mile paved oval track has been abandoned since 1984. It opened in 1966. It held nine NASCAR Grand National (today's Sprint Cup) events from 1966-71. Richard Petty won four times, Bobby Allison won three, and David Pearson and Bobby Isaac each won once.
The track was used in a few Dodge television commercials in 2011. The ads show various Dodge cars and trucks driving around the neglected speedway.
The land was purchased for a development project that fell apart when the economy soured. The property is currently on the market for $985,000.
In July 1970, 300,000 people came here for the Atlanta Pop Festival. Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and the Allman Brothers Band were among many acts which performed over three days. Hendrix played the Star Spangled Banner just before a midnight fireworks display on July 4.
It was also used for scenes in the 1977 film "Greased Lightning" starring Richard Pryor. The film was a biography of Wendell Scott, a black stock car driver in the early years of the sport.
