Description: About 38 miles northwest of Anguilla who owns the island, Sombrero is essentially just a piece of rock in the sea. One mile long by a quarter mile wide, 95 acres with a lighthouse on top. Apparently the shape of the island was once like a... take a wild guess. But what remains is what's left after the island was raped by greedy American phosphate miners who blew the crap out of the place killing seven men in the name of a few dollars. Graves and ruins still remain. Several years ago a company called Beal Aerospace wanted to launch rockets from the island but they've since ceased operations before getting to space from the island. Today Sombrero is important for the many birds who live there.

Anonymous's picture We do not know if those buried at Sombrero died of heart attacks, fish poisoning or explosions. If you know more than we do, please let us know. Thanks. Bob Conrich, Anguilla Archaeological & Historical Society. bob [at] eastcaribbean [dot] com
