Description: Bath Iron Works is a dense industrial shipyard complex covering around 60 acres on the Kennebek River, and is the largest private employer in the state of Maine. The yard has been producing vessels for the Navy for over 100 years. Recent projects at the shipyard include a series of large AEGIS-class ships, including Destroyers, and 563 foot long guided missile-equipped cruisers. Facilities at the yard include two principal construction berths, each with massive cranes that can lift as much as 220 tons. A new, 750 foot long drydock was added in 2001, part of a $240 million expansion program at the yard. There are additional BIW facilities in Portland, Maine, and at the Harding Plant in West Brunswick. Bath Iron Works is owned by one of the nation's largest defense contractors, General Dynamics.
