Atco Speedway (abandoned)

Atco Speedway (abandoned) (Birds Eye)
This abandoned 3/8 mile paved oval race track opened in 1950. It originally had a dirt surface, but was paved after the 1954 season. It closed in the late 1950's.

Parts of the grandstands and fence posts are still there. Plenty of recent photos in the more info link below.

Wow, the corners don't look very banked...

Many oval tracks in that era and earlier were fairly flat. It was common for races to be held on former horse tracks found at many fairgrounds. Eventually, race cars became faster and NASCAR's banked speedways built in the 50's and 60's became popular, thus banked corners on short tracks became more common. This one reminds me of a small version of Indianapolis. Four right angle turns with short straights.

I'm surprised that this place is still somewhat recognizable after being abandoned for about 54 years.

My Dad raced at atco in 1954 to 1956' I see more than 1 atco race track. His name ia Al McNeill from Lenola N.J. His cars had a star painted on the door, one star, 2star, 3star. Any info would be great. revallempstercommunitychurch@gmail.com

The entrance used to be right off the Old White Horse Pike next to the now long gone Waterford Tavern. My friends and I used to run our death mobiles around it before the Chesilhurst PD forbad us from going back there anymore. Bobby Fields was the Chief back then and nobody EVER wanted to make him their enemy! The access road back there is now all overgrown. If you didn't know it once existed, you never would. My dad owned the Speedway Inn on the Old White Horse Pike and the wooded acres next to the old racetrack. As a young boy I used walk around and explore the old racetrack. I also used to play shuffleboard with the pretty ladies in my dad’s bar.
