Description: Antelope Island is the Great Salt Lake's largest island. In 1893 American Bison were introduced to the island and today they number over 600. Every October there is an annual roundup which is open for the public to see; the buffalo are corraled for innoculations and health checkups. Also roaming the island are antelope and bighorn sheep and plenty of varieties of birds. There are beaches for sunbathing, trails for biking, jogging, hiking, and cross country skiing, a visitor center and picnic and camping facilities. A causeway to the island opened in 1969 which was frequently washed out by waves. In 1985 the causeway was completely submerged due to the lake's rising water level but in the late 80's the water resided some and the causeway was able to reopen in 1993.
