Pdunn's picture Good call, dda! Thanks for the ID. Evidently, they are cargo planes, with the nose opening for access.

Here's another shot of one in flight:

Pdunn's picture According to the Wikapedia article dda linked, this is one of only three flying Carvairs remaining. Its primary purpose is to transport passengers and their cars, thus the name "Carvair."

LoneStarOne's picture Interesting find, Grayson County Airport near Sherman, TX, is the former Perrin AFB where they trained Air Defense Command interceptor crews in the 1950s and 1960s (F-86Ds, then F-102As). For years there was an active scrapping business there which has tailed off in the last several years.

The DC-9 and DC-8 prototypes I believe were scrapped at Grayson as well.

connieUSMC's picture I jumped from Fat Annie at the World Free Fall Convention 2005 held in Rantoul IL (the old Chanute AFB). I believe this was the first time Annie was cleared by the FAA for skydivers. Probably the last time, too. There were 100 of us anxious skydivers in her. 50 on each pass. We only got an alt of 6,000 ft & it took her 30 min to climb to it. I don't know if you can access these links or not

It was a fun jump & a good one for my log book!

Pdunn's picture Thanks, connieUSMC. Accounts like yours make all the hours of scanning runways worthwhile. Well, that and the fact there is usually a cool plane down there somewhere. Really liked the pics!!
