One of four Air Force bases in the San Antonio area, Kelly is a major maintenance center for the Air Force. Much of the operations of the base are being privatized, after realignment by BRAC in 1993, and the Air Force Base title will be dissolved in favor of a civilian name. Kelly is home of the San Antonio Air Logistics Center, one of five major Air Force maintenance and distribution centers in the country, and the primary maintenance depot for the C-5, C-17, and several other aircraft, as well as equipment systems, including the Air Force's nuclear weapons systems. Before realignmnet, Kelly employed over 14,000 people. Some of its functions were moved to the adjacent Lackland Air Force Base. |
