The secret was it had a short wooden pier with a boat alongside it - no water anywhere to be seen. It started off as a joke between here and a town by the sea (the only difference being one town had a pier); so Wirulla decided to build a pier of it's own. It also had a painted toilet block called 'The Thunderdome' - we were to come across more of these in other towns; with different names. Wirulla also had a pub, shop and two giant wheat silos - the silos being a common feature of towns in this wheatbelt area. The road sign pointing down a dusty road into the distance also amused us - it said 'Coober Pedy 590kms' - there are huge distances here. Poochera was a similar size place with a Roadhouse; Camping ground and two giant silos. Another cool evening as we stood in the phone box phoning our daughter; who wouldn't believe us that it was cold stood talking to her. We have had some huge variance in temperatures. |
