Stena Line made shipping history in 1996 when it launched the world's first high-speed ferry. Stena Explorer was the first in a series of so-called HSS 1500 ferries (High Speed Sea Service) that the Stena Shipping Company had developed.

Stena Line's HSS ferry has a unique shape and several design solutions that are patented by the Stena Shipping Company. The high-speed ferries come in two sizes, the larger HSS 1500 and the smaller HSS 900. The first has the capacity for both freight and passengers while the latter only transports passengers, cars and coaches. Onboard both types of ferries are facilities such as restaurants, shops and play areas for children.
