Description: All that is left of this former fighter base is a few hundred meters of perimeter track.
RAF Merston played an important role in the D-Day invasion on June 6th 1944. Three Spitfire squadrons were based at Merston, being Nos. 329, 340 and 341 — all Free French squadrons. Their job on D-Day involved providing low air cover over the beaches.
