Schock made headlines in early 2015 when it was found that, since being elected in 2009, he spent over $100,000 in taxpayer dollars to decorate his Capitol Hill office in the style of Downton Abbey. He spent an additional $100,000 on travel expenses, cars, and tickets to both the Super Bowl and Country Music Awards.
Furthermore, an investigation is underway as to the sale of this property back in 2012. Schock bought the home for $128,250 in 2003 and then sold it in 2012 for $925,000 to one of his largest political donors, Ali Bahaj, the former Vice President of Caterpillar Inc., now the CEO of the company. At the time of the sale, comparable homes in the area as well as the appraised value of the home indicated the market value should have been closer to $695k.
