Abandoned fortifications from the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88)

Basra, Iraq (IQ)
Remains of Iraqi fortifications northeast of Basra. They date back to the 80's, when the city remained under the siege of Iranian troops for several years. The whole area is still covered with earthworks, trenches and strongholds for miles and miles around, making it a silent, stunning testimony for all the thousands who fought and lost their lives in this deserted and ominous place. About ten kilometres eastward from this place there are remains of the Iranian fortifications.
