Abandoned Town of Melito Irpino

Abandoned Town of Melito Irpino

Melito Irpino, Italy (IT)
This small town is located on the right side of the river Ufita. The old part of the town, now abandoned, has only the ruins of a castle built by the Normans and restored in Aragonese times.

In the past it was fiefdom of the counts of Ariano and later under the Gesualdo, Marra, Aquino, Caracciolo and Pagano families. The modern area is where the population moved after the 1962 earthquake. The new town rises in a beautiful pinewood around the commercial area.
